Wednesday Bolts – 3.31.10

KD on the MVP: ”To be honest I get kind of tired of people talking to me about it,” Durant said before the game. “Those awards really don’t mean anything to me. My first year coming in, winning Rookie of the Year, being in that race was cool. That was something that I wanted to accomplish. But it’s all about winning for me right now. Trying to get to the playoffs, trying to get to a championship (level), that’s what it’s about. That stuff is over for me, going out playing for awards. I don’t even think about it to be honest. But it’s cool to be in the race.”

Regardless of that, ESPN’s Award Watch has him third: “It wouldn’t be a surprise to see KD take home the Most Improved Player award. All he does is drop in about 30 points and eight rebounds a night for the league’s biggest surprise.”

Kelly Dwyer, Behind the Box Score: ”Things didn’t always feel so warm for OKC. Philadelphia hung around, Andre Iguodala on the outside and Elton Brand on the inside, but the shots stopped falling as the third quarter dwindled and the fourth quarter took off. A quick 12 off the bench for James Harden in 21 minutes, 26 points for Kevin Durant (though he didn’t even score in his six minute fourth quarter stint), and Serge Ibaka (10 and seven in 21 minutes) continues to get better with each passing game. Apologies for cherry-picking, but if you take away Russell Westbrook’s fabulous 10-13 night against the Lakers from last Friday, he’s shooting 30 percent (18 of 60) over his last six games.”

The Thunder Girls made it to the second round of the NBA bracket thing. And you should vote for them again. They would most definitely appreciate that.

Darnell Mayberry: “The Thunder now has 45 wins with nine left to play. Tonight’s win moved OKC back into sixth place. If the playoffs started today, the Thunder would play, surprise, surprise, Utah. Not the seeding many might have expected, but it’s the matchup Thunder heads sound like they prefer.”

Philly.com’s recap: ”They are young, fast, athletic, fun to watch and very good. The Oklahoma City Thunder is everything the 76ers wanted to be this season. Though the Thunder possesses something the Sixers don’t – a legitimate superstar in third-year forward Kevin Durant.”

Pro Basketball Talk: “Great sign for OKC – not one Thunder starter scored a basket in the fourth quarter, yet they started the period out on a 19-4 run and put this one away handily. Oklahoma City was in control from the start — early on Elton Brand and Iggy start out 10 of 15, while rest of team 3 of 11. That will catch up with you, and it did the Sixers.”

Mustafa Shakur has been signed by the Thunder for the rest of the season.

Looking at Most Improved: “Oklahoma City Thunder forward Kevin Durant is one name that gets mentioned, though his shooting percentage is the same as last year, three-point percentage is down, and assists are slightly down. He has raised his scoring 4.3 points while also improving his rebounding, free throw shooting, and block numbers. A lot of his improvement hasn’t necessarily come in the numbers, but how he has led a very young Thunder team to the playoffs so quickly.”

Magic Number Watch: With the Thunder’s win, it’s now two for Houston and three for Memphis. Big night tonight too – OKC plays Boston, Memphis plays Dallas and Houston plays San Antonio. So if things go to plan, we could get REALLY close.

@Rhett
yeah 43 wins was that number

Thunder are getting way too much positive press for Brooks not to win COY. Am I correct in thinking the Thunder have won more games this year than the last to years combined?

If I was a Philly fan I'd be frustrated and pissed. They blew there chances of being an east contender when they signed Elton Brand.

@justin

World B. Free is still my all-time favorite player name.

@dustin
He's doesn't have the goofy charisma of a Bron/Howard/Wade nor the intensity of personality of Kobe/MJ. Combined with the market, I don't think he'll ever carry the pop cultural cache of those guys. Course, his skill will demand some endorsements, like cp3 or melo.

Do you guys think that kd's folksy unassuming nature will hold him back in terms of endorsement deals and the like???

@Sammy
yeah probably sunday, we will clinch

@Anonymous
Everyone above OKC in the standings has also clinched their berth. I'd assume tix will go on sale shortly after OKC follows suit.

We'll have to send Etan out there to break Nash's nose, and get Amare suspended for it. Then we'll win the series.

Amar'e and Nash are nuts in the playoffs they'd demolish us.

@f5alcon
I have a feeling KD is going to get frustrated by the physicality of the playoffs and Phoenix is the least defensive minded team in the WC. Amare would average 35 a game against us, though.

@Sammy
even over utah? i wouldnt be surprised to see a utah as a number 2 and the suns as the 3, or the other way around, a dallas/denver 4 5 matchup would be awesome.

One scenario I hadn't considered is Phoenix getting even higher and matching up with the Thunder in the first round. Gotta say that would be my ideal scenario; I'd gladly take Phoenix in round one.

I can't believe Denver's currently a 5th seed. I'm more than happy to let Phoenix take the 4/5 if Denver is their opposition.

@andrew
How many young coachable teams do you know that have gone from a 23 win season to more than double that total without changing a single starter? It's a rare difficult feat and worthy of all the praise it's been given. That said, Skiles' and McMillan's respective performances have been just as impressive (for different reasons); between the three, I don't think you can really go wrong.

@Brew

I can see where you're coming from, but I didn't interpret it that way.

wow, kobe can't catch a break. Even if he compliments somebody he's labeled as a 'hater'

@Brew
Yeah. It's really creepy seeing Kobe try to act like he's not a narcissistic dick.

@Jax Raging Bile Duct
If Kevin Mchale wouldn't have mentioned KD in that clip for MVP, I dont think Kobe was going to put him in his top three, look at him hesitate after Kevin ssid KD, that punk is a hater.

PNT :
As much as I would like to clinch a spot this week I got to root for Houston and Memphis tonight. We know we’re in…we need to move up.

Or at least solidify our current position. I do like that matchup against Utah in the first round more than possibly any other.

http://espn.go.com/video/clip?id=5042850 - Doc Rivers talking about Kevin Durant

I didn't think Mike Brown should have won it last year. I agree that Brooks did an amazing job with the defense over the offseason.. He also had a bunch of young, coachable guys to teach it too.. Its not like he was teaching a bunch of veterans to change their ways.. He has not had to face any adversity during this season.. Basically, he has done a great job of guiding this first big step in our teams development, I am just not sure if I can picture him coaching us to a championship.

Brooks should win Coach of the Year,why not?He makes a incredible turnround,it is enough.
He has KD,one of the best players.But he has the worst post players and the youngest players,3 of 4 bench players are rookies.He gets a idea to win 50 games by the team which are not better than Grizz or Clipper or others.Look at Philly or Was or Det,what are they doing now?

As much as I would like to clinch a spot this week I got to root for Houston and Memphis tonight. We know we're in...we need to move up.

@andrew
I think the "but he has a superstar" argument went out the window the day Mike Brown won Coach of the Year with the Cavs last year when Lebron had one of the best seasons in NBA history.

Lebron last year: 28.4 points, 7.2 assists, 7.6 rebounds, 1.1 blocks and 1.7 steals.

If Mike Brown can win Coach of the Year last year, then you can't use a "superstar" argument against Brooks this year. And there's as much to be said for a coach who maximizes his player's talents to an entirely new and higher level than they've ever done before. There's a reason Durant and Russ are seeing huge steps in growth and development, just like there's a reason Bogut and Jennings are seeing the same. Both coaches deserve kudos for helping their players reach their potential.

That being said, I'd say Skiles would be very deserving of the award for almost the same reasons as Brooks so I couldn't really complain if either gets it.

@f5alcon
Very intersting addition to the argument for coach of the year!

@justin
There are several deserving candidates, but I think Coach Brooks is most deserving. To go from 23 to close to 50 wins in one season, while only adding rookies to the second-youngest roster in the league is an amazing accomplishment.

His personality and temperament is a huge reason for our success this season, IMO.

I don't want Brook's to win COY for the simple reason that it seems to be a curse for resent recipients.

I agree with justin. I don't think it's possible to overstate how amazing it is that a new coach was able to get an entire NBA team to buy into such a high level of defensive intensity for an entire season.

I don't see how Scott Brooks can't win Coach of the Year. The turnaround of this defense is unbelievable. This 'franchise' hasn't had a defense ranked this high since the George Karl era, and Brooks made it happen pretty much overnight.

what about alvin gentry for coach of the year? the suns were not expected to make the playoffs and are a potential 2 seed. This was supposed to be a rebuilding year for them.

@andrew

I left out some ABA guys and others because I got lazy typing all that out. Nate Archibald and Walt Bellamy would be on that list too.. I'd say about ~10% of the time that a team has had a 29.6+ PPG scorer they are below .500. I dunno if that's higher or lower than I expected.

I think Kevin Durant owes a lot of his success this season to Brooks' defensive changes and implementation. He's gotten a lot of his offense on the break, which didn't happen a lot last year because we had more dead balls (off other team's scores). I don't think our offense has changed all that much but we're better just because our defense is.

i would also rather have houston win, they are not going to catch us, they also play memphis next tues, so one of those teams has to lose at least 1, so really the magic number is 1 and 3 or 2 and 2 depending on who wins that one.

The best case for us is memphis also wins tonight then loses to new orleans, orlando, houston, philly and us, which eliminates them, but they win all their other games against western conference teams. Houston losses to boston, pacers, bobcats, kings and new orleans, but beat their western conference opponents.

Interesting.. Players have avgd. over 29.6 ppg 85 times in a single season.. So only 6 out of those 85 times has their team been sub .500

So, apparently the Indiana dance team members are named the "Pacemates."

Whatever that is.

Wouldn't it be better if they were named the "Pacemakers?"

You know it's funny.

No coach wins without talent. Skiles has Bogout (and he is outstanding this year due to Jennings) and Nate has Roy. Now that I think about it, the Blazers don't have any poor players on their team.

Brooks and Skiles deserve recognition for getting their teams to buy into their system and allowing them to gel. Nate should get recognition for keeping that team believing when injuries took over. Sloan should get recognition for being consistently good year after year.

Brooks is just as deserving as any of the other candidates, but there's no real reason to complain if any of the above get the award.

@andrew

Players who scored higher than Durant (29.6) on losing teams.

Pete Maravich 1976-1977 New Orleans Jazz (35-47)
Bernard King 1984-1985 New York Knicks (24-58)
World B. Free 1979-1980 San Diego Clippers (35-47)
Jerry Stackhouse 2000-2001 Detroit Pistons (32-50)
Allen Iverson 2005-2006 Philadephia 76ers (38-44)
Adrian Dantley 1981-1982 Utah Jazz (25-57)

Bob McAdoo, Tracy McGrady, George Gervin, and Alex English all came within 2-3 wins of making that list as well.

Not arguing with you but I thought it'd be an interesting thing to see.

I am going to be really disappointed if Scotty gets coach of the year.. Obviously we have improved greatly this year, especially on the defensive end.. However, we also have Kevin freaking Durant on our team.. I don't know how to find the numbers on this, but I really doubt that there are many teams in the history of the NBA that have had a 30ppg scorer who didnt at least have a 500 record. Combine that with how healthy we have been and I think a limited amount of credit should go to Brooks. I would rather see Macmillan or Skiles get it..

It would very difficult for me to find any scenario in which I would root for the Spurs. They might as well be wearing burnt orange as far as i'm concerned.

Kobe has some nice things to say about KD...

http://www.nba.com/video/channels/nba_tv/2010/03/30/20100330_kobe_mvpvote.nba/

Also on the awards watch:

Thabo #5 for DPY
Harden #5 for ROY
Scotty #1 for COY

Is there any real concern that either Houston or Memphis could catch us? They'd almost have to run the table at this point. I'd rather them beat the teams ahead of us in the standings so maybe we can avoid the 8th seed.

@Aenema
Ah. Whoops. I didn't even click the link myself.

Btw, Thunder Girls don't compete until tomorrow in that bracket. So give another reminder in Thursday's Bolts. I'll vote for them.

Yeah, let's root for Houston and Memphis to hurt playoff teams. Though I guess the chances of catching the Mavs should be weighed with the desire to not face them in the 3-6 matchup if that's where we wind up. So maybe go Mavs, go Rockets, go Thunder? And magic number becomes 1 over both Houston and Memphis?

justin :I’d rather have Houston win.

Yep, you're probably right about that.

I'm sorry, listening to it again, it is a shoulder injury.

The Daily Dime TV video on the sidebar said that Paul Pierce is likely to miss tonight's game with a sore back.

Also, I dunno how many of you are familiar with the fans in Philly (all fans of any sport) but they have a rather sour reputation. They'll boo anyone, even their all stars, if they're not performing up to par. So, I thought this quote from the newsok.com link was laugh out loud funny... "... Philly fans lived up to their reputation. Some fans booed a contestant who didn’t fare well in a shooting contest."

I'd rather have Houston win.

The playoffs are sooooo close!!!
