Wednesday Bolts – 3.10.10

Marc Spears of Yahoo! with a nice feature on Russell Westbrook: “Sonics/Thunder assistant general manager Troy Weaver continued to push strongly for Westbrook, whom he felt best fit the franchise with his combination of talent, character and work ethic. Weaver, Sonics general manager Sam Presti said, had a “passion about Russell’s ability to grow with the organization over time.” The pitch paid off: The Sonics took Westbrook No. 4.”

Give KD Skittles!: “I’m good in Oklahoma City. I love it here. I like going outside and seeing the neighbors and they say, ‘Hello.’ They make me cookies and give me Skittles. There are cities you may not get that.”

This is kind of crazy news: The Tulsa Shock plan to announce shortly the signing former Olympic Gold medalist (and HGH user) Marion Jones to play basketball. I find this strangely cool. I’m sure this will draw some interest to the relocated franchise. That, or they were having trouble filling out the roster, since you know, players didn’t want to come and play here.

KD still second for MVP in ESPN’s Award Watch: “OKC is 14-3 in its past 17. Durant has showed improvement on defense while becoming arguably the top scoring threat in the league. His lone negative is turnovers.”

Benson Taylor of Sporting News: “Earlier this season, as recent as late January, the Thunder were one of several teams fighting for the eighth spot in the West. Then came February, when OKC lost only two games, putting the team well above .500 and well on pace to make the playoffs. Now, the Thunder are one of the teams that the Hornets, Rockets and Grizzlies—who are all scrambling to get back in playoff position—are gunning for.”

The Thunder’s on the cover of the new Hoop Magazine: “Believe it or not, the Memphis Grizzlies and Oklahoma City Thunder are on the precipice of a playoff berth in the wild, rugged west, but they’re both built for the long run and are no one-hit wonders. We dig deep to find out which squad holds they key to success out west for the next decade.”

If you want to go to remaining home games, it might start getting tough. Tonight’s game is sold out but they’re doing the “Pack the Ford” promotion where they release 200 tickets around 5 PM. From what I understand, most of the remaining games are going to be like this. Which is pretty great.

Westbrook on former teammate Darren Collison: “He’s always been a great point guard,” Westbrook said. “He taught me a lot when I was at UCLA and he’s done a great job with that team over there so I think he’s having a great season.”

Is Russell trying to copy Tim Duncan? First he's operating out of the low post, then he hits a bank shot

@Derrick
i think the shock picking up marion jones is more about the shock of signing her

I'm not sure if anyone has mentioned this, but I am really impressed with the management for the Tulsa teams. First, they draft a future NBA player out of high school and then today the Shock picked up Marion Jones(former Olympic Sprinter). Tulsa is proving that they are a big Business city that knows how to market a new team.

Rhett :Who’s Marion Jones? Oh yeah, the chick that stole 5 medals @ the 2000 Olympics. A BALCO client. Her coach & ex-boyfriend ran a check fraud ring and she went to prison for perjury. Awesome pick-up Tulsa.

Jax Raging Bile Duct :After reading the article, it has some to do with what I thought. Most of the legit assists are in transition, or an entry pass to the post. The set plays they run off the high ball screen are being credited as an assist even though the scorer is making basketball moves after the pass in order to create a score.
Those transition assists should be in every point guards resume. Kudos to Collison for that. Too many young PG’s don’t know how to handle transition well.
Collison and Paul are talented enough to get those alley-oop type assists, where they command so much attention getting to the bucket that a quick alley-oop to the rolling big works wonders.

good post . . .

I love Collison's game because you can tell that he doesnt care who scores - his transition game is excellent . . .

@morgan
hah, its the double 5 star season lock-it-in parlay anchor!

@MartzMimic
Completely forgot about that party thing last night... Glad to hear it was interesting.

@GAP

Is that you 4 star play of the day....do I get a money back guarantee after i "book" it?

Regarding Collison's numbers:

That Princeton offense has a lot to do with it. It's like the opposite of the triangle offense, where everyone gets 4-6 assists. And the Hornets are really set on called plays, which is probably where these questionable assists come from. I'll look up that HP article and see what they say before I comment further.

no one was bashing Collison - most of us said he was very good - the guy is a pure point guard, and he can penetrate and finish . . . it's going to be a great challenge for us because he has gotten better in the last month . . .

as to the poster that wanted Thabo on Thornton, it probably wont happen because Thornton comes in when Thabo usually comes out . . .

@MastrMatt
One of the coolest things at the season ticket member party last night was the tour of the video center. When I asked about the scoring sound clips and if the players had input, the guy said several people have input, but they certainly wouldn't use something if the player objected. I don't know if that could be the case with Ibaka or not, but...

It's also possible that they used it when he was playing limited minutes and decided not to use it as much since he cracked the rotation.

@MastrMatt
when we make the playoffs and they dont i think some of that will go away, especially if they slide and dont win 40 games.

Just curious, but does anyone know why the Chewbaca noise hasn't been used at the games lately when Serge does something awesome? I used to look forward to that. Yes ... I am easily entertained.

wow .. there were a few typos there. crap.

@Jackson

im not saying collison is bad, i even said he would start on a lot of teams. Durant helps RW somewhat, but not as much as west and okafor help collison. Durant has a 50.7% assisted rate, and shoots 47.6%.

West shoots 49.3% and has 56.1% assisted, okafor shoots 53% and has a 67.7% assisted% they combine for roughly the same number of points as durant and shoot less free throws, so more of their points are assisted.

If westbrook had bigs like them he would be getting 10 assists a game.

I know I'm biases, as we all are, but I don't see why Memphis is getting some of the same love we are. They are definitely better than they were last year, but is their future quite as bright? I don't thinks so. Also, it they are destined to forever suck due to the ghost of Bryant "Big Country" Reeves.

nobody is bashing Darren Collison

Royce -

I think a Skittle-themed Durant shirt needs to be in the works from Tree and Leaf.

They do that "pack the ford center" every home game. 50 are raffles off about 5:30. Then those who didn't win raffle tickets can proceed to buy 150 $10 tickets

haha you guys are funny trying to bash a rookie who is playing very well. He is going to be a very good player in the league, just watch him play the kid has all the skills to become an all-star pg. For the "team is built for it" is plain garbage, what team isint built for it? the Thunder? you dont think having durant on westbrooks team helps out his numbers? I think collison would love a Durant right now.

Thunder wins by, 14pts...book it!
