Not pretty but it counts: OKC gets by Sacto, 113-107

BOX SCORE

This game secretly worried me. A big tilt against Denver was on the horizon, the Kings aren’t a marquee opponent and the Thunder had cruised fairly easily in their last two. There was a lot of reason to come out unfocused, uninspired and unready.

And they were guilty of all three. On one end, at least.

The Thunder didn’t bring the calling-card defensive intensity they’ve become known for tonight, allowing the Kings to 107 points on 54 percent shooting. But the offense was clicking once again, keyed by Russell Westbrook’s 30 points and 13 assists and Kevin Durant’s 39 points, as Oklahoma City squeaked one out, 113-107.

There are multiple things to be flustered about from this one if you’re a Thunder fan. The aforementioned defense. The absolute stinker the Thunder bench turned in (15 points, 10 rebounds total). The lapse in focus at times. But the good news is, it’s a win. And when you’re battling for a playoff spot and now playoff seeding, just winning is kind of sort of good enough. OKC didn’t play its best game – far, far from it – but the Thunder had more points than the other guy when the clock read zero and that’s what matters.

I realize a lot of this has to do with the opponent, but it really feels like Oklahoma City is hitting an offensive stride – 113, 119 and 109 in the last three games, all three with the Thunder shooting over 50 percent from the floor. The ball is moving, Russell Westbrook is playing absolutely stellar basketball and guys like Nenad Krstic are stepping up in a big way (14 points, nine rebounds).

When Krstic plays well, OKC has a pretty dynamic offense. There’s a real inside-out quality to the sets and Westbrook has a bailout option if his first look is shut down. Again, a lot of this has to do with OKC playing Minnesota, Toronto and Sacramento the last three. I realize this. But it feels like OKC is playing with a confidence and a swagger, and really hitting a stride. Sometimes putting in games like this boosts the confidence and makes a difference down the line. We know the Thunder can defend. But they’re really cranking it up offensively lately.

Notes:

  • Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook and Thabo Sefolosha combined for 69 of OKC’s 113 total points tonight. Durant and Westbrook had 69 of those.
  • The Thunder may not have played good defense tonight, but they took care of the ball, especially late. OKC didn’t turn it over in the fourth and good thing too. And extra possession or two for the Kings could have made this a bad, bad loss.
  • Same could be said for the free throw shooting too. OKC went 28-32 from the stripe, but if they had struggled, you might be reading an angry recap.
  • OKC had three alley oops tonight. That’s got to be a season-high. Russell Westbrook threw up an oop to Serge Ibaka late in the first quarter. It was very Chris Paul-ish to Tyson Chandler-ish. We haven’t seen many lobs this year from the Thunder, but I have a feeling we’ll see more of this connection in the very near future.
  • James Harden is an improved defender, but there was an obvious difference between Thabo on Tyreke Evans and Harden on Evans. Evans finished with 27 on 7-17 shooting (13-17 from the line) and a lot of that was with Harden on him. Jimbo Slice isn’t a bad defender, but he wasn’t ready for the brute straightforward style of Evans.
  • As a whole, OKC’s reserves got torched, giving up a 19-4 run in the first half. The four Thunder bench players were a -13, -10, -6 and -15. The Thunder starters were all in the double-digit positives.
  • How many other point guards would you trade Russell Westbrook for in this league right now? One? None? He’s playing awesome right now and I don’t think he’s anywhere near his ceiling. I think this is just a small leap in his progression. 30-13-5 is a monstrous game and once again, he controlled every aspect of it.
  • Another thing about Westbrook: He’s absolutely one of the most entertaining players in the league. I don’t know if there’s a guy I’d rather watch fly in the open court. He’s making no-look passes, plays above the rim and is always a threat to do SOMETHING on the offensive end. He’s just a treat to watch.
  • Kevin Durant with 39 on 13-26 shooting and 10 rebounds. He’s a good basketballer.
  • How about that runner Westbrook hit right before halftime? Brian Davis was calling for a foul (there was none), but the degree of difficult was definitely high on it.
  • Speaking of, Davis and Grant Long spent a good minute talking about books they are currently reading. It was not the highlight of the broadcast for me.
  • Nick Collison made some big plays off the bench (seven rebounds), but he’s really the only guy that saw extended minutes. Ibaka only played seven. Maynor five. Harden was in foul trouble and only played 16.
  • Harden Headband Watch: Did not wear one tonight.
  • You know that Cox commercial I said I hated last week? They played it TWICE IN A ROW tonight. I hate you FS Oklahoma. You did that just to spite me. I know it.
  • How many times has Russell Westbrook come up with a HUGE offensive rebound inside a minute this year? Four times? Five? It’s kind of becoming a signature play.
  • Thunder move to 21-2 against teams currently .500 or worse. Only the Lakers (20-1) are better.

Anything less than 3-0 on this homestand would have been disappointing. And Oklahoma City did exactly what needed to be done. Two blowouts and one closer-than-it-should-have-been. It sets up a pretty big game in Denver tomorrow night against a surging Nuggets squad. The Thunder haven’t played well in the Pepsi Center and the fact its a second of a back-to-back is disconcerting, but I think they’ll be ready. Maybe that’s why they took so many possessions off tonight. Like the Jonas Brothers, maybe they were just saving themselves.

Next up: At Denver Wednesday night.

Brandon, Jordan averaged 30 pts and 8 rebs in 88. So it wouldnt be 30 years.

umm... Tyreke... you could hurt yourself shooting like that

:o

Elegy444 :@girlballer lol, nah, I think I found the best $50 seats in the building and picked those up for season tickets. HOWEVER, we’re upgrading to the $75 seats this year b/c I dumped my Sooner football tickets.
I would’ve laughed my face off if someone would have told me I’d do that three years ago.

You guys and girls are so lucky... I have to drive 18 hrs one way (or paying about a grand for 2 game tickets and flight tickets) to Toronto if I want to watch Thunder play on the 19th and that's the only game the Thunder play in Toronto. :(
My wife even said she will do half the driving if I really want to go... But, I just can't do that... :(

Bryan :@justinDurant was already amazing to me, he just managed to pick it up a bit more.@LeftyI
know. But it just seemed like all of the shots he missed came in the second half when the Kings were clawing their way back. Durant had most of his points in the first half, and disappeared for most of the third quarter. It’s still a great game. It just looked ugly in the second half… right before the MVP chants.

That's the situation that KD is having, he's playing great basketball most of the times then we always want more just because we are too used to his great performance... I am one of those people, too.
Like, I sometime think it's not a good game if he only gets less than 30 pts and less than 10 rbs, something like that... We are just too used to that... 22 pts in the first half and 17 in the 2nd half, which I think it was alright. Disappear in the 3rd period is no big deal, as long as your teammates are playing good and there is no point to take away the game from your teammates, and that's just my opinion... As long as he helps the team to finish the game with a win...
If we really want to nippicking, which I don't think we should beside their defense last night, RW had about 10 asts (please correct me if I am wrong) in the first half and then only 3 asts in the sec half. I know, I am picking on something crazy because assist is something depend on who you pass the ball to (most of the time), but it's kind of like picking on KD's 22 pts first half with only 17 pts sec half... Just a thought... :)

@Elegy444

Agreed! Thunder-mania worse than a crack habit....all you want is just a little MORE!

I think when you got scorers like green, westbrook, Krstic and of course KD its not Thabo’s job to score.

that’s mostly true — we don’t need much in the way of points from Thabo, but he has GOT to score a little bit each game. We need that extra threat, even if only a small one, to keep defenses honest. We can’t always be playing 5 on 4 on the offensive side.

I think he is afraid of taking shots since everybody is telling him he cant score lol.

girlballer :@crick

And possibly the most important….
They stop serving the beer after the third.

heh, well I guess you'd like the fans to be at least semi-conscious at the end of the game so they could figure out who won...

Isn’t this the most common complaint of the non-NBA fan? “There’s no reason to watch anything but the fourth quarter, etc…?!?”

however...

Those earlier quarters are useful for getting the players warmed up and loosened and in proper game form. Then, of course, you get the opportunity to make "ESPN hightlight" type dunks, alley oops, etc. Plus, they're handy for racking up fouls on opposing players, thus diminishing their playing time and/or effectiveness late in the game.

So, the first three quarters have some good uses!

Is Anderson a SG? Give hardens time to him, it cant get any worse. just kidding. He is really in a slump. Oh and am i the only one who thought Thabo was awesome? I've seen Tyreke Evans often play and he always dominated his defender (like he dominated harden),but not this time. Westbrook, simply amazing. Nonuts Krstic is playing(scoring) very good the last games, i hope he keeps this up. Looking Forward to the Denver game. RW0-Billups, Thabo-Carmelo and KD-Afflalo.

I liked Bryan Davis' Paul Westphal quote: ''No disrespect to other players, but Thabo Sefolosha is the most important player in the OKC-Roster.''

I think when you got scorers like green, westbrook, Krstic and of course KD its not Thabo's job to score.

Grant Long is so annoying. He always talks about his NBA-Career. I've done this i've done that coach told me to do this sean may remembers me of that guy of louisville... blah blah blah seriously who cares. Oh and Bryan Davis singing when the ref leaned his head to thabo's shoulder... holy cow!

@Elegy444

Sure, anything to improve the experience of those $250/seat tickets right my man?
***just kidding**** ;)

AD :Cruise then close…
Do good teams do this sometimes? Play an opponent close till somewhere around the middle of the 4th and then turn it on to close out the game. Maybe alittle like playing with a mouse before the cat kills it.
Bad habit? Probably. What if you cant turn it on?
Good? Maybe. You learn as a team how to close. How to finish a game and the other team.
Anyone else get a sense that our young team is learning how to close?

EXACTLY! Of course good teams do this sometimes! In fact, this is exactly what seperates the "good" teams from the rest. You think you are doing good hanging in there down 3 or 4 points with the Lakers, Celtics, Spurs, etc... until the last 6 minutes of the fourth and they turn it on to win by 11!!

Isn't this the most common complaint of the non-NBA fan? "There's no reason to watch anything but the fourth quarter, etc...?!?"

AD :

Yes! absolutely! Which is why we're 36-23 this season.

However, late game execution in close games is still problematic. That's one good thing about last night not being a blowout -- it gives the team another chance to work on this skill.

A bad thing about last nights close was Russell missing his second free throw that would have made the lead 7 (three possessions). Making only one left us at 6 points ahead, potentially dangerous. We came out of that alright, but it's going to be critical in playoff games.

@Anonymous
I love the fact that they start chants up in Loud City. It's so cool sitting lower level and hearing you guys just start yelling. Really improves the atmosphere and gives the Ford Center even more life.

Cruise then close...

Joe :
I absolutely cannot believe the improvement in Russell Westbrook’s game. It’s like magic.
He is without a doubt the number two guy. Jeff Green just moved to number three.
RW will likely be an all star someday when Nash and Kidd retire.

Just thought of a new nickname for Russ...

'Instant Russell'

yep, whenever your team is in a lull, just put some Russ in there. All of a sudden: slash to the basket, and-1, slash to cutter, basket. Bang, bang, bang. In just a short time, you've added 5,7,8 points to the score.

'Instant Russell' - just add water, heh

;)

justin :
Are there 3 people in the world who aren’t doing this Bill Simmons thing where they ask themselves a rhetorical question? 2? 1?

justin=jealous of simmons :)

@Bryan
I understand what you mean. It's hard sometimes to realize how good he's played, because he scores so quietly. I look at the MVP chants as more of a "thanks for having an awesome season and being so cool all around" kind of thing, rather than a per-game thing.

@justin
True enough. I just think that if Westbrook had been playing like this all year, he would have been in the Allstar game. Durant was already amazing to me, he just managed to pick it up a bit more.

@Lefty
I know. But it just seemed like all of the shots he missed came in the second half when the Kings were clawing their way back. Bryan :4)Durant had an UGLY second half.5) The MVP chants kind of annoy me. I know Durant put up a lot of points and made some nice plays. But that was NOT an MVP performance.

39 points on 50% shooting and 10 rebounds is pretty darn good.

Isaac :@crick

Mathis Brothers has locations in OKC, Tulsa, and Indio (as Lou mentioned) and Ontario Califonria.

the infection has metastasized! well, my apologies to Tulsa and California
:(

I expect Russell to make one bank shot buzzer-beating trey in every game from here on in!

No doubt Westbrook has made great strides over the last month, but its also nice to see kristic start play some good ball also. It sure looks to me like he is playing with a lot more confidence as of late.

@Bryan

Durant went from not being an All Star to being possibly #2 in the MVP race..

justin :
In fact, KD probably has a better case at MIP than Russ.

Totally disagree... RW went from "move him to SG and bring in a real point guard" to "holy crap that guy is an awesome point guard!"

Durant went from Great to Greater!

.... frankly.... the MVP of that game was Russell "Point Guard of the Future" Westbrook!

I never get back to my computer in time to comment on the game thread or the post game thread anymore.

A few observations before I go back and read the comments.
1) Serge Ibaka should have played a few more minutes in the second half. He was not having a great game, but to not play him at all in the second half seems silly to me unless there was an attitude problem.
2) James "Black Hole" Harden needs to pass the freakin ball... seriously. We brought him in to be that unselfish playmaker. Um, what happened?
3) Offense comes easy when Krstic has a good night.
4)Durant had an UGLY second half.
5) The MVP chants kind of annoy me. I know Durant put up a lot of points and made some nice plays. But that was NOT an MVP performance.

Are there 3 people in the world who aren't doing this Bill Simmons thing where they ask themselves a rhetorical question? 2? 1? ;)

There is not a point guard in this league that I would trade Russ for straight up, considering talent/upside, age, character, contract and injury history. Not even Chris Paul. He scores well in all these categories except injury history. I worry about his knee: He had torn meniscus removed, not repaired, which probably will lead to more knee issues down the road.

are there 3 other teams that are more fun to watch the thunder? 2? 1? i mean, even when they let a stinker like the Kings stay in the game late, they are just so darn fun to watch.

ESPN has Russ at #5 for MIP. KD still #2 for MVP and they say that, "barring a collapse," Brooks has CoY wrapped up.

In fact, KD probably has a better case at MIP than Russ.

Aaron Brooks will get more love.. Russ is still in KD's shadow a bit.

Brandon :
3. Why isn’t Russell Westbrook being talked about for Most Improved Player? We need to get this campaign going. Royce, make it happen!

He definately has the games to back that up now...

so could russell be considered for mip?

Goodness, if these guys ever learn how to play defense to go along with that offense, they could be really good. ;)

To anyone who attended the game last night, did the crowd seem kind of a little more low-key than normal? And while I know this probably doesn't apply to anyone here, I really, really, *really* wish people would not leave early. We get a lot of good press on our crowds at Thunder games, but that whole leaving early thing sort of puts a damper on it. Less than a minute to go in a tight game, you look up and the place looks half empty. Not good.

That shot by Westbrook at the end of the first half, wow. I may have been the only person in the building who missed seeing it go in, because I was hollering for a foul. Replay showed there wasn't one, but that was a heck of a shot.

I absolutely cannot believe the improvement in Russell Westbrook's game. It's like magic.

He is without a doubt the number two guy. Jeff Green just moved to number three.

RW will likely be an all star someday when Nash and Kidd retire.

@crick
Mathis Brothers has locations in OKC, Tulsa, and Indio (as Lou mentioned) and Ontario Califonria.

a few things:

1. KD and Westbrook became the first 21 year old or younger teammates in NBA history to both get a 30/10 in the same game.

2. KD could become the first player in 30 years to average 30/8 in a season. He's close. He'll need to average about 9 rpg the rest of the way.

3. Why isn't Russell Westbrook being talked about for Most Improved Player? We need to get this campaign going. Royce, make it happen!

I dont really like the Durantula. What cause he's black and deadly with long arms?

Just imagine the endorsements he could get from that company!

How about caling KD "The Duracell" ? he just keeps on going and going with his 25 point games. Wonder what the record is for 20 point games?

I can't believe this team could plausibly win the nw division. As soon as tomorrow night, we could be tied with Utah at 1.5 games back. I don't actually think okc is a better team than Denver, but anything can happen over a 20 game stretch.

I'm realistically hoping for the fifth seed and a winnable series against Utah. But winning the division would be like whoa. The third seed, a first round matchup against Phoenix or the spurs, and a conceivable conference finals birth -- that this is a plausible scenario kinda blows my mind.

Really looking forward to the Nuggets game. It'll be on NBA TV International. Tip-off at 2 am Icelandic time. Am I gonna watch? Of course I am!

I think Nenad is too modest there. I think he’s a true lobster.

I see what you did there.

ok... but you didn't see what I did last summer!

crick :
ok, just realized that everyone NOT from the OKC area has absolutely no idea who I just referenced

I was in Indio, CA a few years ago for the Coachella music festival, and me and a couple other Okies were walking around when we came across a Mathis Brothers store. It was very strange.

As for the game, I no longer live in OK so I've been watching online feeds whenever I get a chance. I caught some of today's game. Not the best game ever obviously, but a win is a win. I can't wait till the playoffs (hopefully) and next season when they'll actually show Thunder games on national TV.

Sammy :
Wait, mathis brothers furniture? Didn’t realIze that was nationwide. I get those commercials all the time in l.a.

what??? no way! is it the same guys? my condolences, if so...

crick :
I think Nenad is too modest there. I think he’s a true lobster.

I see what you did there.
