Monday Bolts – 3.8.10

Jay Mariotti with a tremendous (yes, Jay Mariotti and tremendous) piece on Kevin Durant: “It’s important to the NBA, and for sports, that Durant play in May. It would be his first entry not only into the postseason but into a visible role as the game’s next true ambassador. With another foray into the 30s, he’ll break Spencer Haywood’s franchise record for most 30-point games in a season. Many players his age wouldn’t be aware of Haywood, who blazed a path for college underclassmen to enter the NBA early with a landmark Supreme Court victory in 1971. Durant, who fled to the NBA after only one season at Texas, is well aware.”

John Mayer in a Thunder jersey. I wanna run through the halls of the Ford Center, amirite? /high five

KD’s interview with Magic Johnson:

Darnell Mayberry: “Brooks made it a point to compliment his bench play tonight. And the unit was pretty good. Ibaka had 11 points and five boards. James Harden had 14 points, two rebounds and two steals. Eric Maynor filled in nicely for Westbrook when Westbrook missed nine minutes in the third quarter and had four points and four assists. And Collison was huge defensively tonight with six boards and a blocked shot to go with four points and a lot bumping and battling down low.”

Mayberry also looks at OKC dealing with the new attention: ”The Oklahoma City Thunder has arrived on the NBA map, garnering attention and acclaim unlike anything the franchise has experienced since relocating from Seattle nearly two years ago. Evolving into the talk of the league is an honor, a testament to the Thunder’s thrilling turnaround. But with increased publicity comes perhaps the Thunder’s greatest challenge yet. Dealing with it.”

Kelly Dwyer put out his award watch this Friday and had Nick Collison second for Defensive Player of the Year: ”Don’t trip. If you’ve watched the games, you’ll know. He’s not swatting shots away by the dozen, and he’s not hoarding boards at a Howard-style rate, but Collison moves his feet and contests like you wouldn’t believe. Over a hundred possessions, the Thunder are almost 7 1/2 points better with him on the floor defensively than off, and while he might strike you as an unassuming figure, I beg you to watch him play before deriding his inclusion here. The man also leads the NBA in charges taken, despite sometimes acting as the second or third guy off OKC’s bench. Joke about flopping all you want, but when you block a shot, you might not get the ball as a result. When you draw a charge, the ball is yours. The Thunder are the third-best defensive team in the league, and it ain’t because of Durant, and it’s certainly not because of Nenad Krstic.”

Russ gets a Lion Face: “Westbrook got inadvertently hit in the eye by Carl Landry. It split Westbrook open and he had to get stitches in the game to close the wound. He came back right before the end of the third quarter to try to make sure his team didn’t blow a road win they could definitely use. He seemingly had enough of the rough play and Thunder miscues. So he went to the basket. Over and over again. He scored 13 points in the fourth quarter to lead the Thunder to victory and finished with a stat line of 21 points, eight rebounds, four assists and five stitches. From now on, instead of making note of all the times Westbrook drives to the basket, we should make note of all the times he gets stopped driving to the basket. It will be a much shorter list for us to keep.”

Behind the Box Score: ”Andres Nocioni. You hate playing against him, but you’d love … well, a lot of times you don’t love him as a teammate. Most of the time, actually. I’ve seen him do it time and time again. He either leaves his man for an open three, takes a terrible shot just seconds after coming off the bench, or uses that aggression in nastier ways. Like the flagrant foul that kicked the Thunder in the tail and turned the tide. Russell Westbrook had 14 fourth quarter points, and the Thunder just looked longer, all game. Just a longer, better team, though the Kings are to be applauded for hanging in there as long as they did.”

Yeah I've been checking him every once in awhile. He might not ever be a passer but get the good he's got out of him.

Anyone noticed the numbers that Rodrigue Beaubois has been putting up this month for Dallas? I know that he never played for the Thunder, he was immediately turned to Dallas for BJ Mullens after being drafted as 25th first round pick in 2009, but is still interesting to see how these players develop.

For the first time he was employed for more than 20 minutes in 3 consecutive matches against Minnesota, Sacramento and Chicago.
Combined stats of these 3 matches:
29 min, 21 PTS, FG 25/40 (62%), 7/17 3P (41%), 0.7 STL, 0.7 BLK, 1.0 TO, 3.0 REB, 3.3 AST.
His season stats so far are:
12 min, 6.2 PTS, FG 51.1%, 40% 3P, 0.5 STL, 0.2 BLK, 1.05 TO, 1.3 REB, 1.3 AST.

@f5alcon
Yeah, I was really happy with how my team did. Sucks its probably going down in flames Mavericks style in the first round. They'd been getting significantly better too, until this week. I lost 3 guys that contributed- Biedrins, Jason Terry, and Kyle Lowry, and then I lost the best player in the league. Brown has all but guaranteed the LeBron won't play tonight. I am screwed. Thunder spin: not good news, Spurs should roll now.

@nick
yeah true, i got luvky, i had drafted blatche at the start of the season, but his numbers have exploded. I guess i just got lucky with the matchup against you this week, and i was just happy making the playoffs in such a huge league

GAP :
Oh and how bout Ibaka and his steady climb as an offensive player! That’s my guy and the kid is getting better every time I tell ya.

I just want to take a little time to pat myself on the back for thinking Ibaka would contribute this year. I was more excited about him than Harden. And I don't want to go back in the archives to prove it.... but I'm pretty sure I coined "Iblocka" during the preseason..... you're welcome Matt Pinto!

@Mark!
I like how you started this post with also despite the fact it was completely unrelated to the previous post. Haha

@f5alcon
Yeah, but looking at the schedule you have like 6 more games than I do this week. FT% is pretty heavily to you, and I'm clinging to the categories I do have. I need assists and steals, and apparently LeBron missed shootaround today and is likely to miss another game. Especially given the way Wade has played, and Q Rich shockingly becoming comptent, I'm not feeling confident. And you've got Blatche, that's paying dividends here at the end of the year. I'd know, I grabbed him in my other two leagues once the Washington trade decimation went down. Damn Mike Brown and his resting of LeBron.

Also, we're better at scoring fast breaks off rebounds than I thought we were.

@dream catcher

Ugh, I had a post and lost it because it said I was posting too quickly (when I haven't posted at all :P)

I'd be remiss if I failed to mention MAPS3... We just passed a civic projects proposal in OKC called MAPS3. Included are funds to build a $130M railed street car network downtown, connecting major businesses, employers, communities, etc. About 5-6 miles in total length.

Also building a large hub for the network that will allow for future expansion (pending another civic improvement vote in 7 years) to metro communities (Mustang/Yukon, Moore, Norman, Edmond, etc).

The downtown rails likely won't be completed for 8-10 years (could be sooner but I wouldn't bank on it), but it's happening.

@dream catcher
i guess the other thing is if you had friends who had a car you could do a lot better.

@nick
i am NW okc forza, and you could still beat me, i only have points and 3pt locked up, every other category is up for grabs still.

@justin
yeah nowhere in okc is really expensive, when i lived in NYC i paid $2000 a month for a studio apartment, now i overpay $830 for a 2 bedroom in okc.

@dream catcher

I would just like to reiterate the weather comment that f5alcon made. We have all 4 seasons here. Ice storms in the winter, and it isn't uncommon to hit 105 in the summer.

It can be miserable enough with a car, let alone a bike. I don't live downtown or in midtown, but I would imagine that life would be pretty rough without a car.

So this is entirely unrelated to everything, but I would like to mention the fact that I'm likely to go on a homicidal rage resulting from the fact that my first place Daily Thunder fantasy team, which hasn't lost since I figured out how to play after week 1, is almost definitely going to lose in the first round thanks to a rash of injuries and LeBron missing two games. This epically sucks. Who's NW OKC Forza?

When they say downtown is expensive keep in mind that's relative to other parts of OKC.. depending on where you are moving from, and what your job prospects are it might be more feasible for you.

Looking at some of these prices I gotta move to OKC..

@dreamcatcher
It would actually be just less than a mile-and-a-half to either the Ford Center or Bricktown from NW 10th and Walker.

thanks for the responses. Ill do some research on the downtown area.

@dream catcher
You can certainly bike to both Bricktown and Ford Center from there (along with working downtown if that is where your job is), but if you are looking to move there, the problem is your day to day groceries and other purchases since OKC is so spread out. There is a Homeland grocery around 18th and Western so I suppose that wouldn't be too bad (closer to 10th and Walker than the Ford Center). There are plans and funding to put in a streetcar system downtown which would help and Midtown has been mentioned as a stop, but you are looking at several years before that is finished. Depending on what you are used to it is doable, but you may find it difficult without a car.

@dream catcher
One other thing, we do have enough cold weather where biking from jan-feb is probably too cold.

@dream catcher
yes thats true, but its not cheap to live downtown or in bricktown, and i dont know of any grocery stores down there but i am not sure on that, im not down there very often aside from the ford center. I guess it depends on what kind of job you will have also. Really buying a cheap used car and living farther away is cheaper overall.

I lived in Fort Worth, TX for a year and a half without a car. I assume OKC would be a similar endeavor: frustrating.

f5alcon :@dream
catcher
A car is pretty much a requirement here, it is possible to use the bus system but very inconvenient. From end to end the city is probably about 30 miles in any direction. If you include suburbs add another 15 miles in any direction. you can literally drive a half hour at highway speeds and not leave the metro. But it is a cheaper place to live then most urban areas in the country, i guess it depends on where you are coming from.

thanks, someone mentioned to me if I live at Midtown, 10th and walker, that its only 2 miles max to Bricktown, and Ford Center, and you can use a Bike. Is that true?

I'm seeking your help: Does anyone know where I can find KD's quote from last summer predicting the Thunder would go to the playoffs? I can't find it anywhere.

@Lefty
that may not be a bad option

@dream catcher

@dream catcher
It is a great place to live. I moved here to attend college and never left. It is a little difficult to get around if you don't have a car. Being the 2nd largest city in the U.S.(in terms of square miles) and a subpar mass transit system (buses)a car is almost a necessity here.

IMO, Andres Nocioni is the most hated opponent in the short OKC history after his antics last night. The guy is a thug, pure and simple. He should relax and have a drink. Oh, wait...

Lefty :@Jared Honestly, I haven’t even looked at the boxscore for the game.

OK. He played 31 minutes. Got 13 points (2/3 from the field and 9/10 at the line) and 5 blocks. He only had one rebound, but from what I could tell it wasn't from lack of trying. Anyway, he's got that defensive presence we've been looking for, and he can definitely run the floor with the other guys. He just seems like a good fit, but I'll be the first to admit I'm no expert on these matters.

Is OKC a nice place to live? I want to move there but I have heard that it's hard to get around town with no car.

sorry if its off topic..

Kd will resign with us as long as we treat him right.

I hope for once that cleveland wins tonight over the spurs. Give us a little breathing room for the 6th spot.

At 19-13 road record we are 2nd best in the west on the road, which will help us in the playoffs.

Hornets have been on a slide lately, good chance for us to win at home on wednesday, and as long as we dont overlook the nets we should beat them too. Leading to a very important matchup against the jazz(we win we clinch tiebreaker against them)

@Jared
Honestly, I haven't even looked at the boxscore for the game. I just love how athletic he is and he looked to be playing pretty hard. He's young, he'd fit in well with the other guys. I think he'd be a great addition to the team.

Send them both draft picks and the rights to Vaden. they could turn it down, but they'd have to think about it.

I think Darnell reads Royce's recaps becuase his bullet style game observations seem so familiar sometimes..

@GAP
I really liked the interview, too, and especially the answer to the "OKC? Really?" question. Recently, for some reason, there have been a lot of interviews and articles with KD about whether he would sign a max contract, would he be angry if he wasn't offered one, etc. and he's always said that he likes playing for OKC but usually with something like "I know it's a business" thrown in, which always makes me nervous. Here Durant had an opportunity, as he's had before like in ESPN's NEXT article, to say that he simply loves being in OKC. We're not flashy like LA, NYC, or Chicago, but KD likes our city and wants to help build it up, which makes me feel good about the future.

@Royce Young
"amirite?" is in danger of becoming to equal to "That's Thunder Basketball!" on the worn-out phrase scale.

As much of a douchebag as John Mayer has been in interviews of late ("My penis is a white supremacist," etc.) I'm not overly excited to see him in a Thunder jersey. Still, it's a lot better than seeing it on Lindsay Lohan or an actual white supremacist.

Boots :
I watched that interview yesterday with Magic. Dont the two of them seem a little to close together for comfort?

Note the recent revelation by Magic that he used to sleep with 500 "people" (yes, people, not "women") per year when he played for the Lakers. I wouldn't be surprised if Magic had the hots for KD.

Oh and how bout Ibaka and his steady climb as an offensive player! That's my guy and the kid is getting better every time I tell ya.

I simply loved the Durant interview, I didn't have a chance to watch. I especially liked the part when he said he doesn't wanna be in D.C. in april, he would rather be in OKC playing in the playoffs.

@Cha Cha Cha
Yeah, i'm with justin on this one. Straight photoshop pic.

@Boots All of his always do, There was one, I forget who, maybe Paul Pierce, or a coach, where their legs were actually under each other's chairs. Its probably one of the most fascinating, awkward subplots of the season.

@Cha Cha Cha
Yeah I've been sent that a lot.

@Cha Cha Cha

Looks like a photoshop to me..

Okay, so this may be a little uncalled for. And for that, I apologize, if so. But I'm sadly amused and drugged out of my mind on painkillers, no thanks to a broken ankle.

But apparently there's a picture of Byron Mullens on the toilet circulating around? WTF?

While I really like what Collison brings, I don't like using on-off court number for him. He's playing behind Jeff Green and Nenad Krstic, two guys who aren't good individual defenders. Before them, he played on a team that rarely even tried on the defensive end, so being the only one made his numbers there look great.

He is an incredibly intelligent defender, and I hope big time that we keep him in a backup role (for less money) when his contract runs out. However, I think his numbers are more an indictment of Green/Krstic/Sonics' system than DPOY conversation starters.

@Lefty
He had a pretty good stat line. Man i bet it would take a lot for the wiz to get rid of him. Especially now since they unloaded so much of their team.

After watching that Celtics-Wizards game, I want JaVale McGee again.

@Keith
Aye. Just now reading it.

Collison deserves every bit of defensive notoriety he can garner. He's been that guy for years. When Rambis was with the Lakers he did a All-Rambis team, much like the All Madden team. For the players with real lunchpail work ethic that are tough and get it done. Collison was Western Conference first team.

@Boots
It looked the the interview was set up for two regular people, but then two 6'9"+ guys sat down instead. KD looks really awkward in a chair not designed for his size.
