Thursday Bolts – Deadline Edition

It’s trade day! Make sure to refresh like a maniac all day long. You never knew when a deal has gone down!

Mike Prada of SBN ranks the top 20 NBA games of the season and the Thunder was in three of those: “Grizzlies vs. Thunder: I can’t tell you how badly I wanted to rank this game first. Seriously. This was the ultimate showcase of the two most promising young teams in the league, and it ended in a perfect way with Rudy Gay’s buzzer beater. All the key players starred, particularly Kevin Durant. Both teams played great defense all night, showing the type of effort you don’t usually see from young teams. Both teams played together and didn’t beat themselves. It was a great showcase of the future of this league.”

Kevin Durant is second behind LeBron in SI’s MVP watch: “Having scored at least 25 points in a string of 26 straight games, and with his Thunder edging up the playoff ladder, Durant gets the call here, especially with the next guy’s injury.”

In Stein’s power rankings, OKC has moved up to eight: “Wait a sec. The Thunder had the same record as San Antonio at the All-Star break and only one top-flight finisher? Book it: Durant is going to finish in the top 5 in year-end MVP balloting … and maybe in the top 3.”

Hollinger has OKC five.

Looking at Scott Brooks’ Coach of the Year case: “It’s the defensive gains that illustrate what an outstanding job Brooks has done with the Thunder. Oklahoma City was dead last in defensive efficiency last season and had no where to go but up. To the surprise of everyone, everywhere, Brooks has installed a defensive philosophy and mindset in OKC, transforming the Thunder in the process and making them a legitimately scary match-up in the first round of the playoffs this postseason. This defensive transformation has to be unprecedented. The closest recent defensive leap would probably be the Boston Celtics’ jump from 2006-07 (17th) to 2007-08 (1st), although they did it by adding two future Hall of Famers to their roster. Brooks has done it in OKC through repetition and by instilling simple defensive philosophies and focusing on the fundamentals — simple as that.”

KD fit right in at All-Star Weekend: ”For the newcomers at All-Star weekend, the chance to hang out with a new set of peers can be more important than the actual game. A player can’t help but be influenced being in the same room with Kobe Bryant, Tim Duncan, Steve Nash, Kevin Garnett, LeBron James and others. “Just being around these guys, seeing how they act,” Thunder forward and first-time All-Star Kevin Durant said after Sunday’s game. “Everybody was cool. They welcomed me in like I’ve been here for the last 10 years and I felt right at home and like I belonged, so it was a lot of fun. And I’m glad I was able to come out here and got an opportunity to play.”

From John Schuhmann: “Kiki Vandeweghe on the deadline: “I like our team.” That says it all, doesn’t it?”

A great recount of the “Scott Brooks Rule”: ”The NBA actually has no formal “Scott Brooks Rule,” but the experience was so gut-wrenching, Brooks quickly became a martyr amongst his peers. Here’s what happened: Somewhere around 8 p.m. local time on Feb. 23, 1995, Brooks was on the court during his team’s halftime warmup session when Houston Rockets general manager Bob Weinhauer waved Brooks over and informed him he had been traded to Dallas. “Well, that’s a great way to tell me,” Brooks said, or words to that effect. Brooks never saw it coming. He thought he had survived the deadline. Nine days earlier against the Los Angeles Clippers, Brooks had erupted for 23 points on 9-of-10 shooting and also had four rebounds and four assists.”

I don't see the "two camps" as being do something or don't so something. It's more whether someone thinks there's a deal worth doing now. I'll agree that Dalembert, for example, would be an upgrade over Krstic, but if we acquired him, wouldn't we still be looking for a championship caliber center?

I mentioned this in an earlier thread, but I get a kick out of Stein's rankings. I think No. 8 maybe be a bit generous, but then I see that OKC is either tied with, ahead of, or has swept the season series with every team ranked ahead of them, save the Cavs and Lakers.

@Mark!
This is a great point... I think two first or second round exits and everyone in the state will be like "Oh! NOW, I see..."

i hope the cavs beat denver tonight put them in a tie for 1st place in the division.

I think people will have a different understanding of what it takes to be a successful team after a playoff series or two.

@DL
The reason you can't continue to do that is our core is dirt cheap right now and gonna need extensions soon. The extensions would eat up our cap space, which greatly hinders our ability to bring in a big FA. However, if a free agent is brought in now (when OKC does have the space), we're allowed to go over cap to extend/re-sign our core players.

@dork
darko could be a clown shoe salesman

@Anonymous
A hard cap doesn't make sense given the major players in the league (LA, NY, Boston). All those teams are in line to be well over any current cap in 11/12. NY is looking to grab 2-3 max level players to long term contracts this offseason. It's not feasible or sensible for the league to force teams to blow themselves up. If we have Durant and Green extended, and even a max level guy in free agency this year, there is almost no way the new CBA can void those contracts.

In an apocalyptic scenario the new CBA would affect Westbrook and Harden, but not Durant or Green. And even then, remember that the owners are the ones pushing monetary measures. They aren't going to screw themselves over with their own players. All they really want is to squeeze down contracts, not lose players.

If Scott Brooks isn't coach of the year there is something wrong with the way that award is decided. Doc Rivers went from almost fired to coach of the year in one year because he added Ray Allen and Kevin Garnett. Brooks added a full season of Thabo, Harden, and Ibaka and took his team from "worst team ever" talks into the playoffs in little more than a year? Coach of the Year. Period.

no matter what you try to sell me on Darko i’m not buying….

He is the ultimate paperweight!! would you be interested now?

who wants a size 18 shoe print on your papers....i believe i would still pass

I know this is far from comparison, but he was decent in the exhibition games. Just don’t want to look back saying we could have had that guy.

We have KD.. I am pretty sure blake's career will be a side note compared to KD's career.

@DL
I agree

@DL

we do loose the cap space when we resign the guys we have.....have to use the space before extending contracts if not we will loose the space

@DL

We need another impact player eventually, unless everything goes right with everyone's development (always a chance, but..). I dunno how we'll get a #2 for Kevin Durant by nickel and diming it.

The way James Harden has been playing lately has made me excited for his prospects but I still feel we need one high percentage scorer in the front court aside from Durant, prefereably one who can rebound. I don't see that on our roster..

@justin

no matter what you try to sell me on Darko i'm not buying....

All this means that if we don't sign anyone this offseason we won't necessarily lose the cap space.

Look at Darko's #'s last year in Memphis, not much different than Ibaka's and arguably better. Darko's been jerked around too much, it's sad that his career's been ruined.

But we have been using our cap space! We temporarily take on bad contracts (Kurt Thomas, Matt Harpring, Etan Thomas, Chucky Atkins, etc.) in exchange for first round picks and young players (Serge Ibaka, Eric Maynor, Byron Mullens, Thabo Sefolosha and a couple of picks in the 2010 draft). Why can't this patient and effective strategy continue? If we have $10 million in cap space this offseason we shouldn't overpay a big free agent--we should let other teams make those mistakes--and wait for more opportunities to get cheap young talent.

Darko could still be a decent backup in the NBA.

wow, I didn't know that about Coach Brooks. that sucks. maybe gave him an extra layer of "tough skin" though.

@morgan
You won't be laughing when the Wolves are winning championships with a Rubio-Love-Darko-Wilkins core.

...

...

lol.

@busta

Oh I think he'll be a great player for sure. I just worry about his career being filled with injuries, and shortened because of it.

we can't have that guy....the clips arent going to trade their #1 pick before he even plays an NBA game. Even if Presti went after him the price would be huge.

now im going off topic but wtf is Minni doing trading for Darko? Kahn's brain works in mysterious ways lol

Lots more free agency players this offseason, Amar'e will get paid..

Omar :@andrew If Amare doesn’t get traded, he will most definitely exercise his option to stay, which I think is 17 million.

So he can be discussed nex year in trades? If I were him I'd be insulted taking this year after year. I see Amare moving on.

@justin
But he also runs the risk of getting a lower $ amount because of the uncertain CBA situation and risk of injuries. It's a potentially tough spot, for sure.

However, it seems like Miami really wants him, we know that they're one of the least frugal teams in the league. Probably worth the risk, but it's not a sure thing by any means.

@KingGondo

Not for Amar'e. Remember he's had some major injuries. What if he doesn't exercise his ETO and gets hurt?

I think it's certain he'll opt out and play the free agency market this offseason for that reason.

@Jax Raging Bile Duct

Blake is a spitting image of Antonio McDyess in almost every way, down to the likely injuries..

Omar :@andrew

Hmm but he may just want out of Phoenix after this whole ordeal..

If it's looking like the new CBA will limit/eliminate big guaranteed contracts, it would be hard to just walk away from $17 million on the table...

My worry about Blake is that he relies more on athleticism than length to dominate his position. If you look back at other players in that situation, they typically have short, injury plagued careers.

busta :@dorkFind another center for trade. Griffin = Thunder money.

I don't think the thunder have a money problem. And so far Griffin has been no better than Oden in his rookie year and is still unproven in the NBA. Krstic although not that great of a starter by anymeans could be a decent backup though :)... I still think we have the peices we need (barring a blockbuster deal) and should just sit tight for a lil while :)

Boots :
Adding a big free agent contract can easily hinder our ability to resign our core after their rookie contract expires.

Only if the rules change. Right now, we can go over the cap to sign our own players. So, the only way a free agent contract could hinder us from resigning our core is if the ownership group refuses to pay the tax and just let's a core player walk.

That never happens.

Omar :@andrew

If Amare doesn’t get traded, he will most definitely exercise his option to stay, which I think is 17 million.

Hmm but he may just want out of Phoenix after this whole ordeal..

The thing about spending on a free agent this summer is that there are only 3 options, with a monkey wrench thrown in (the new CBA) for bad measure.

1) You don't sign anyone, you lose the cap space. You gain nothing for your money.

2) You sign someone bad. You're stuck with him hurting your team, and you can't trade him.

3) You sign someone good. He helps the team one of two ways; on the court play, or in a later trade.

Essentially, we have a free asset to use - it's called space. If we don't use the space, we lose the space. Not using the space does not save you money. The only thing you can put in that space is a free agent. You can think of the free agent as a product on the floor, or a trading piece for another asset later. The only thing that makes sense is to sign a free agent. If you do your job poorly, you hurt your team. If you do your job well, you help your team. If you don't do your job at all, you missed an opportunity. In our market, we cannot afford to miss an opportunity.

Now, the new CBA changes our micro market, as well as the macro market. That will drive many decisions. But, the way the rules are now, what I laid out above is the way to go. If Presti has a crystal ball that tells him that for absolute certain, the rules will change and the above will no longer be true, then he acts accordingly. However, I don't think there is any way something that foundational to the business will change that dramatically. But, who knows how it will all work out.

@justin
I just look at it from the perspective that there is such a thin margin of error in the NBA... I don't think anyone doubts that a core of Westbrook, Durant, Green, Harden, Sefolosha, and Ibaka could one day be a championship core. But when it comes to adding those pieces that "put us over the top," we have to be extraordinarily careful about who we sign, and for how much.

Making the right deal could be the difference between competing for a championship, or being a perpetual 4/5 seed and second-round exit. Our priorities right now should be: 1) continue to reinforce the defensive mentality of the current squad while improving offensively, 2) lock up Durant and Westbrook with long-term deals (as well as Green if the price is right), and 3) continue to be available with our picks/expiring contracts if a great deal comes along. If we do that, consider me a happy camper.

@Boots
wow lots of grammatical errors there, sorry. I think you get the gist of it though.

scotty brooks is the man. after last year, i kinda hoped we'd get a flashy name, but i'm glad we didn't.

justin :
At some point you have to improve the team.. it’s been easy going so far and the results are fantastic, of course, but after this summer as I’ve said 1,000 times it becomes very difficult to add pieces due to extensions to our young players.. no big deal if Presti doesn’t do anything this deadline but if he goes through the offseason with $12+ million and doesn’t do anything with it, I’d be concerned.
Then again he’s got OKC fans brainwashed somehow that the team can’t spend any money and afford to resign the rookies..

ugh, I feel like the two camps I broken records. So this is the point in which I say signing playing to long term contracts does hinder our ability to sign all of our young players.

I will believe this as fact until I see someone project KD, Westbrook, and Green's (plus any one else we may want to keep) extension numbers and how much cap space these contracts take up and in what years. That plus the contract numbers of veterans like Collison and other role players that is a big part of our success this year. Adding a big free agent contract can easily hinder our ability to resign our core after their rookie contract expires.

justin :@KingGondo
Then again he’s got OKC fans brainwashed somehow that the team can’t spend any money and afford to resign the rookies..

I think this is unfair to say. It might just be the wording you used, and I might be acting a bit pedantic, but I think it's less OKC fans being brainwashed (which is kind of condescending) and more OKC fans being uneducated. We're still new to this whole thing, and when you've succeeded as fast as we have with a player like KD, it's natural that they don't want that getting away, and they'll tend to focus on that. We'll get better with time, I promise.

Krstic + Weaver + First round pick for Gasol isn't impossible lol. But I can keep dreaming.

@andrew
If Amare doesn't get traded, he will most definitely exercise his option to stay, which I think is 17 million.

The situation in Phoenix really confuses me.. It seems that they have now pissed amare off badly enough that he will either play way better for the rest of the season or just tank.. Either way IMO it is pretty unlikely he is a Sun next year. So I dont understand why both teams wouldn't do this deal.. Miami gets amare, phoenix gets cook, beasley, and haslem. Phoenix lack of interest in beasley puzzles me. Plus they would get Cook who is another good 3 pt. shooter for them..

I just wonder if our owners are willing to operate in the tax. especially with a new CBA coming in 2011....

Casey :
Even though I know it won’t happen.. What about trading Krstic and Weaver for Marc Gasol? Just an idea!! We get increase some cap space with it also..

haha, yeah if we are gonna do that might as well trade harprings contract for dwight howard

If he wasn't hurting this season, I'd love to trade for Joakim Noah.

@morgan
We've already accomplished more than expected this year. Build for the next.

@KingGondo

give away pieces of our playoff team for a guy that will set on the bench for the rest of the season.....sounds logical
