Thursday Bolts – 2.4.10

First off, happy birthday to my wonderful mother. Today, she turns [expletive deleted]. Hope it’s a great day!

Secondly, a small announcement: We are discontinuing the Zombie Sonics t-shirt. Thunder management had some issues with it and instead of making a big stink about it, we just thought it best to avoid any dust up and pull it down. But the other designs should be printed and re-stocked sometime very soon. So put those credit cards in a holster and get ready.

Chris Paul was named Western Conference player of the month for January. While Paul had great month, how does Durant not win this? 32 ppg, 8 rpg and 50-50-90 shooting? Come on! And then I see this from Hornets 24/7 after last night’s game: “I gotta say I was rather irritated by the Thunder announcers when they were complaining about how Chris Paul got the Western Conference Player of the month over Kevin Durant. They just couldn’t believe it. Paul went for 21 points, 12 assists, 5 rebounds, and 2.4 steals and his team went 12-5. Durant went for 32, 3, 8, 1.1 and his team went 8-7. I would think the last number in each of those lines may have swayed some people.” Oh. Well, I guess I disagree.

KD will be coaching James Harden as an assistant in the Rookie Challenge. He’ll be with Adrian Dantley. Chris Bosh has the sophomores with Patrick Ewing.

Darnell Mayberry on last night’s game: ”In his best English yet, Serge Ibaka explained how he’s gone from wide-eyed rookie to poised impact player. How, in his first year in a new country and inaugural season in the world’s best basketball league, he’s transitioned from a player who registered one “DNP” after another to one who is capable of 11 minutes, 46 seconds of crunch-time action at New Orleans on Wednesday night and manages to be effective despite all the difficulties. “I don’t feel pressure because I am 40 games into the NBA,” Ibaka said. Something about the simplicity of his explanation summed up his maturity over four short months and potentially foreshadowed what’s in store for the 2008 24th overall pick.”

James Harden seventh on NBA.com’s rookie rankings: “Harden is looking forward to ending the rookies’ losing streak in the Rookie Challenge — and doing it against teammate Russell Westbrook, who was chosen for the sophomore squad. “[The rookies] will definitely win,” Harden told the Oklahoman. Westbrook, who was a part of the rookie squad last season, is confident it will be eight in a row for the sophs. “They don’t have a chance,” Westbrook said. “Look at our team and you make the prediction. They really don’t have any bigs.” Harden slips in the rankings this week after going just 10-for-31 from the field.”

David Thorpe ranks the Thunder rookies eight (Harden), 15 (Ibaka), 22 (Maynor) and 43 (Mullens).

Thorpe also mentioned this about Ibaka: “Runner-Up, Best Shot Blocker: ”Ibaka is one of the rare big guys who can block shots while standing next to the rim and also get down and defend smaller guys out on the floor as they try to take him to the hole. He had a block on Monta Ellis that was truly spectacular, staying low and sliding as Ellis tried to dribble past him, then exploding and swatting the shot as the ball left Ellis’ hands. He also does a terrific job on close-outs by getting his contesting hand up and out on the shooter’s shooting hand, which not only helps to distract the shooter but occasionally earns him the block, as well.”

Mike Prada on SB Nation breaks down each team’s trade situation: “The Thunder seem like they’d rather take their cap space into the summer and do something then. They’re very young, so there’s plenty of time to make that final move. But don’t be surprised to see something, well, surprising. Remember, the Thunder traded for Tyson Chandler last year until he failed his physical, and that came out of nowhere. If they do so again, they’ll probably again look for a center that’s relatively young, but has a big contract. The Thunder have five draft picks in next year’s draft in addition to expiring contracts, so they have the assets if they want to use them.”

OKC sixth in FanHouse’s rankings: “Any day now, Kevin Durant looks ready to be your new NBA scoring leader. Durant trails Anthony by a meager 29.74 to 29.69 points per game, Durant has scored 25 or more in 22 straight games, leading the team in 21 of them. It’s no surprise the Thunder has gone a solid 14-8 during Durant’s magnificent stretch. While we’re at, it throw Scott Brooks’ name in the mix as a possible Coach of the Year.”

Durant third in SI’s MVP race: “The 21-year-old has become one of the few players for whom opponents’ main focus is shutting him down. The third-year player already has guided the Thunder to more wins than they recorded all of last season while putting them on pace to make the playoffs. Did we mention he’s only 21?”

i got some kd 35 nike kicks and went to tree and leaf to get a dt shirt and i so wanted the zombie shirt but found out it was discontinued. oh well got a durantula shirt and go green so its all good thanks to the tree and leaf guys that were cool

Todd :
Or considering how the future of the two franchises look, maybe deep down they just wish they could swap players, ownership, and corporate sponsors with the Thunder.

Don't forget fan base. Judging by the amount of fans in their arena last night I'm betting they wouldn't mind swapping fan base either.

With a Bison head somewhere.

There lots of good t-shirt ideas out there.

One two sided shirt idea would be something like "Got Thunder" or "The Thunder you've been waiting for" and then on the back something like "Member of the Thundering Herd Since 2008" (or 9 or 10).

Well, not to be rude, but I'm not displeased about the ZS shirts being pulled. Never did care for that name. Doesn't do anyone here or in Seattle any good. Let the whole thing rest in peace.

As far as that Hornets blog getting irritated about Brian Davis and Grant Long talking about KD deserving player of the month, maybe there's still some residual issues there involving the Hornets' time in OKC. There was some pretty vicious name-calling between the two fan bases. Or considering how the future of the two franchises look, maybe deep down they just wish they could swap players, ownership, and corporate sponsors with the Thunder. :)

Atlanta both does a lot of good passing and a lot of IsoJoe.
Often the best takeway, in my opinion, is a good portion of one side of the argument and at least some of the other.

Over the last 5 games Thunder 8th best on offensive efficiency

I'll say good or bad when I find it or when it seems relevant to knowing where the balance is.

What... Serge is using contractions after only starting to learn English a few months ago? Plus he's using prepositions (into versus in) correctly? This guy may rival Adonal Foyle for most intelligent dude in the NBA.

I hate that I missed out one. I was really looking forward to wearing it when I see the Thunder playing in Boston in March... sigh... ;)

Yeah your right i should do that

anon :@anon
i hate to say i told you so, but regarding the ‘zombie sonics’ shirt… i told you so. seriously, do you think there are people in baltimore with ‘zombie browns’ t-shirts? no. it wasn’t cool.

Actually, it was easily our best seller. And I understand most people didn't get it. But again, it was a play off Bill Simmons' nickname.

Actually it was cool hence why somepeople never got a shirt. This is more about a Business being a business than it not being a cool shirt.

@josh

HAHA i read a lil bit of the ihateclay site and they are hilarious imho(the attendance thing really made me lol). that being said I hope that new bill they have comming up passes so they get a team and have something else to focus their attention on.

If you are REALLY intent on getting those black shoes just take your xbox with wifi connection to a starbucks and plug it to your laptop monitor :) hehe or go to a friends house and use his net for about 5 mins.

i hate to say i told you so, but regarding the 'zombie sonics' shirt... i told you so. seriously, do you think there are people in baltimore with 'zombie browns' t-shirts? no. it wasn't cool.

@anon

Hell yeah i love 2K10 i have it but i wish ihad internet cause i want to have the black shoes for the away jerseys what KD 's rating besides the 82

@josh

You need to diversify! I have two teams.. The Thunder and The Thunder (nba 2k10 myplayer :))

I mean to make anybody upset i have no job my girlfriend wants to leave me this team is all i got im sorry

i mean thats what they say on ihateclay.com and sonics central i bleed the rainbow colors just like everybody else i just get defensive when people talk about our team im sorry

And facing off against Royce I might add.

@nick

nick :
I vote Royce sends a discontinued Zombie Sonics T-shirt to the winner of the Daily Thunder fantasy league as an awesome prize. Because I really want another chance at one. [Note: This statement has nothing to do with the fact that I'm currently in 2nd in the fantasy league. Nothing at all.]

I'm in 4th with less chance of winning the league than the Thunder winning the west. But I like the idea.

@Brad

I think the "big foot" sightings of the nba would be quadruple doubles :)

@josh

HAHA!!!! the irony of them sayin' we don't appreciate what we have? pot kettle black?!? eh i'm not going to say anything about other than i find it humorous.

I mean im just saying hes the best rebounder on our team guys r saying he only does it when hes boxing out montae ellis

@josh
30-10 is a statistical anomaly, like the NBA equivalent of a big foot sighting. Check out where KD stands in 20-10 games compared to CB3 (among other great bigs) and you'll see he may struggle against true 4's and 5's.

@josh

BTW, my original comment wasn't really directed at you. There have been a few other posters complaing about the same thing lately.

@josh
I'm not going to describe to you how many levels your comment about this being a blog for women is an unwelcoming statement to many different readers.

I've said it before: we need both types of fans. We need fans who love each and every player and believe they can do no wrong. Or the fans that just prefer to always focus on the positives in life. That's fine. We need them.

But this team can be better. KD can turn the ball over less. We can get tougher inside. It can be frustrating to watch the team you want to see succeed make the same mistakes. So we talk about where improvements can be made... KD can develop his passing, Green needs some help down low because he can't defend solid post players, Westbrook can be more consistent about his shot selection, etc.

Besides, it's a bit of hyperbole to suggest only bad things are said by certain people. I've seen numerous positive remarks made by all the regular posters.

Do u guys realize that on old sonics blogs they post what u guys complain about and say u dont appreciate what u have that all tryin to get at

billups named to all star team, the sad thing is his numbers are not better then westbrooks, being on the 2nd best team helps though.
billups: 19.2PPG 6.1 APG 3RPG 1.2 SPG 5 total blocks 2.5 TOV
russell: 16.1PPG 7.4 APG 4.9RPG 1.0 SPG 19 total blocks, 3.2 TOV

How am i trying to make people feel unwelcomed on this blog everyday i get on here and read comments u guys talk bad about the players even when were winning

Or green has better handles than KD if u guys knew any history of him in highschool he played shooting gaurd

Funny, I've been thinking that there are a lot of really sensitive posters on this board lately. Funny how perspective changes what you see, right?

The people who are critical would just like to see the team do better than they are. I don't think that's a terrible thing to want. I love this team or I wouldn't be posting here. I'm sure others with similar viewpoints/approaches to watching the game feel similarly. If you don't appreciate the critical commentary, just ignore it.

You shouldn't try to make Thunder fans feel unwelcome on a Thunder blog.

I mean how can u say KD cnt rebound on bigger people he leads the league in the most thirty ten games in the season two in front of CB4

This is the best post of the year! I LOL’d at work. For shame.@girlballer

Funny thing---I was thinking this myself...

I don't know about complaining.. Just some lively debate. Makes the day go by.

well, ya know, I guess it's to be expected when your team is having a terrible year and a losing record... oh wait

Haha. Speaking of delusional Blazers fans, a guy on Blazers Edge just said he wouldn't trade Batum straight up for Durant. (He was mocked)

Man u guys complain about everything Its like a blog for women

Our offense looks OK at times (though those times so rarely seem to be in the 4th quarter). I think it's coming along. There's certainly plenty of room for improvement, but there's a steep learning curve.

I think our success in the 3rd quarter of the course of the season shows some promise. Coming out of the locker room we make adjustments, but the young guys don't have it down yet for 48 minutes. Indeed, if we are as Justin said up to 17/18 in offense, we're in a very good spot looking long-term. There's been noticeable improvement this year (I would argue particularly over the last six weeks), the fourth quarter execution is better (perhaps less awful?), and Westbrook is doing a fine job as of late. Harden and Maynor are likely getting hurt a bit by the mid-season rookie wall and the adjustments opponents are making now that they have NBA film on those two. I agree with a lot of the complaints, but I would also argue that there's been undeniable and substantial progress made this season, let alone from 12 months ago.

Quick point on the KD/PF argument -- that supports my oft-repeated argument that we can survive with a deep frontcourt bench if we can't get Bosh or Lee. If Orlando's playing Lewis at the 4, by all means move KD to the 4 for 30 minutes that night. If Boston's running KG and Perkins, have three or four big bodies to throw at them. Durant can create mismatches anywhere from the 2 to the 4 so let's try and use him on a matchup basis, no matter what position he's listed at on espn.com.

BigVessXpress :
I’m incredibly sad about the Zombies shirt. That was the only one I wanted but every time I checked the mediums were out of stock. Now I will never know the joy of being a proud supporter of the OKC Zombies.

I think what we need is a black-market. An underground meeting place where we can get the shirts in a brown string tied package. If that were available, I would be all over it. Make mine a large...Hint, Hint!

@justin
The problem is I don't see KD gaining that weight to become a legit PF. This is his third year in the league and I can't tell much of a difference in his body since he came out of college. Bosh on the other hand has exploded, he is an intimidating force down low (Pause). I don't see KD having that same impact. He is doing ok playing on the wing.

Sorry, I meant to say that Dallas isn't the Suns or the Knicks in terms of offensive style and pace. The Mavs have a great half court offense. Not that the Suns and Knicks can't operate in the half court, but I just prefer the Mavs.

I like to watch Dallas run their offense. I think when the Mavs are firing on 8 cylinders, it's the best overall offense in the league. They aren't the Suns or Knicks, but they've got great cuts, great screens, great ball movement, they're great at knowing where everyone is, they exploit mismatches. It's a thing of beauty.

And this is coming from a long time Rockets fan.

I saw some highlights of that Jazz game against Portland last night, and it makes me want to watch that game. The ball movement in those highlights was amazing.

@cdb77
I think Atlanta fans would be pretty amused by that statement. They're frustrated beyond belief by their offensive scheme, otherwise known as IsoJoe.

@kev
The issue of passing really showed against ATL to me. ATL moves the ball real well and in contrast OKC's ball movement looked stagnant.

justin :@kev
FWIW our offense has been smokin’ the last couple games.. I think we’re 17th or 18th in the league now. After the Warriors we might even be league average.
I agree about lack of ball movement after the initial take.

we played the Warriors (who I like but they obviously stink) and the Hornets (19th I think) - our offense should look better . . .

my issue is that there isnt nearly enough good passing on our team - Harden's lack of passing is really mystifying - Durant hasn't learned to pass out of double teams - Green doesn't pass . . .

on the flip side Westbrook is having a very good season passing the ball . . .

@kev

I agree about lack of ball movement after the initial take.

Bosh and Durant not only have very similar body types but their games are similar offensively, Bosh is maybe a bit more explosive of an athlete, and Durant of course has much greater range. I don't think Durant would have a problem as a PF with a bit more weight and the willingness to do it.

justin :Jeff Green has a very good handle. He doesn’t pass that much and it doesn’t get used a lot in our offense due to Kevin Durant / Russell Westbrook making most of the plays. I’d say his handle is better than Durant’s, even. When Green is isolated and decides to take it to the basket how often does he lose the dribble? Not often..
Kev I think the problem with our offense is the way it’s coached. I don’t think Jeff Green is a Lamar Odom type, but it’s hard to argue the fact that he was a good passer coming out of college.

I'm not debating the fact that he was a good passer coming out of college - I watch very little college bball (very slow paced and overcoached) so I wouldn't know. I do know that he doesn't even look to pass now - Harden is following suit - I don't like it, and that's one (of many) reasons why our offense is below average, which stinks considering we have (basically) the leading scorer on our team . . .

BigVessXpress :I’m incredibly sad about the Zombies shirt. That was the only one I wanted but every time I checked the mediums were out of stock. Now I will never know the joy of being a proud supporter of the OKC Zombies.

BigVessExpress wears a medium?
