Thunder signs Antonio Anderson to 10-day contract, waives Harpring

It’s officially official. Per a press release:

Oklahoma City Thunder Executive Vice President and General Manager Sam Presti announced that the team has signed Antonio Anderson to a 10-day contract.

Anderson, 24, is a free agent call-up from the NBA Development League’s Rio Valley Grande Vipers where he has averaged 15.5 points, 4.0 rebounds, 5.9 assists, 1.3 steals and 39.6 minutes in 32 games (32 starts). A 6-6, 215 pound guard who went undrafted out of Memphis in 2009, Anderson went to training camp with the Charlotte Bobcats. He appeared in five games, averaging 3.4 points, 1.8 assists and 1.4 rebounds in 14.2 minutes before being waived on October 22.

With his signing, Anderson becomes the 14th Gatorade Call-Up from the D-League this season.  He will wear uniform #8. In order to accommodate Anderson, Oklahoma City has waived forward Matt Harpring who was acquired along with Eric Maynor in a trade with the Utah Jazz on December 22.

I think this deal was more made for practice purposes more than needing game help. With Kyle Weaver hurt and the scare of Thabo getting poked in the eye, it seems like OKC might be a little thin on the practice court. But there is also a chance I’m wrong about that. Anderson is a long, defense first shooting guard that doesn’t shoot the ball extremely well, but is very athletic and can guard three positions. He’s kind of like Thabo Lite in a way.

The good news is though, I guess Harpring can broadcast for the Jazz in peace now.

Anderson knows the dribble-drive offense. Presti-Brooks might like that.

Maybe Presti was hearing such good things about Anderson, he thought we was getting James Anderson from OSU.

I like to think that Presti is just taking a look at Anderson so that when he does the massive sign&trade for Bosh this summer, he will have someone cheap to replace Weaver or whoever.

Thabo-Lite is definitely a good definition. What Anderson never got enough national credit for on some very good Memphis teams was complete lock-down defense. Much like Thabo, he never created much offense, but as an extremely quick, long, powerful defender on the wing, he made a lot of behind the scenes plays that got ignored while the MSM was busy praising Rose/Evans/CDR.

I'll be super excited just to see him in the uniform. I know Tone couldn't be a longer term prospect for the team with Thabo in place, but from everything he was at Memphis, he seems to fit into the Thunder defense-oriented team-first mentality.

Adrian Wojnarowski tweeted that the Thunder were going to sign him prior to Thabo getting poked in the eye.

This reminds me a lot of the practice squad in the NFL. It seems few teams really take advantage of the D-league, so perhaps we are just ahead of the game. But yeah, the kid won't see any playing time. Durant and Green will get shifted up to the 2 and 3, respectively, before he gets on the court. This just gives someone to represent Thabo in practice and keep everything going smooth.

To be honest, if we lose more players to injury, we are more likely to bring in Mullens than Anderson. This is one of the times where having such versatile players comes in handy.

@justin
I agree with you Justin; sounds like a Kyle Weaver kind of player since he does seem to dish out assists and handle the rock. Something Thabo CAN do, but it really isn't his role. Weaver was part of a three guard lineup at Wazzu and handled the rock quite a bit.

He's likely here until Weaver begins practicing again.

No matter the outcome of the playoff scenario, it's nice to see the Thunder getting national attention. Long overdue.

yeah a 10 day contract is just for depth, really if we lost thabo, harden would start, then westbrook would slide over and maynor/ollie would start and after that would slide durant and green down and start collison or ibaka. So we would have to lose a lot of players for him to see floor time.

most boring roster move in the past two years? heh.. :)

ESPN.COM/NBA sportsnation poll question...
How will the season play out for the thunder

reach finals
lose in conference finals
lose in conference semifinals
lose in first round
miss playoffs

That is one thing about Russ, he never stands around. Always moving on offense even if he doesn't have the ball..

@Bryan

Westbrook plays well off the ball. Solid spot up shooter, good motion, shoots well off screens. We just don't use him in that role very often. Never understood why. Just another reason our simplistic offense bugs me.

Going on 25, Anderson is older than two-thirds of the roster.

I wonder what the conversation between Presti and Harpring was when they decided to waive him. Because, while he hasn't played, it would be kind of rude to just waive him without telling him.

Antonio Anderson’s senior season ended in disappointment, when Memphis was eliminated from the Sweet 16 by streaking Missouri.

This is from that article referrenced, and makes me smile on a Monday :) :) :) :)

I dunno about 'Thabo-lite'. Anderson was a decent playmaker his last season at Memphis and that's seemed to carry over into the D-League and his brief foray in the Bobcats preseason.

He could be a rotation player, not on our team, but he has an interesting mix of skills. Closer to Kyle Weaver IMO than Thabo.

The league office counts a lot of things including call-ups.
They want the D-league to sound like it is working. It may be working well enough for the league but it is far from being a good B division. Maybe a good B division is impossible here with the NCAA.

Harpring's contract didn't have any more value, right? So this really isn't a big deal from that sense.

Also, this gives Utah a chance to resign Harpring to the 1day contract so that he can retire a Jazz. I always like when teams do this kind of thing.

Looks like Presti and company blinked when faced with the prospect of an injury in the front court. I remember when Thabo got hurt I was in the car and heard he was on his way to the locker room.

My first thought was, no worries, Harden will be fine. But then how do you conduct practice? How does a struggling Maynor adjust to the extra minutes? How does Russell do playing off the ball? What happens if another wing player goes down (gasp)?

Yep... I think I would have signed someone, too. Especially with the playoffs looming.

can't see him getting any time - between Thabo, Harden, Durant, and Green the wing positions are locked up - I guess (like Royce said) he's here for practice/injury insurance purposes . . .
