Oklahoma City gets back on track against the Wolves, 109-92

BOX SCORE

Now that’s exactly what you would hope to see from a playoff contender after two straight losses. Oklahoma City came out with a frantic energy and sustained it for a full 48 minutes, as the Thunder jumped out to a lead, stretched it out and then held on to it to win by 17, 109-92.

This was one of the cleanest, most focused and most well executed games this year by the Thunder, and that’s even with 17 turnovers. They shot 54 percent from the field, never scored less than 25 in a quarter and defensively was extremely sharp, holding Minnesota to 40 percent shooting. And what was a little weird about it, was for once it didn’t feel like Kevin Durant was the focus. He kind of felt like a secondary player. And I don’t mean that in a bad way at all. The entire team was sharp. There was excellent ball movement, a ton of cutting and a bunch of great passing. Durant played well, but this game was the first time in a long time where he wasn’t the offensive star. It really was a total team effort and he was one of the guys. And I think that’s a great, great sign.

Leading all of that was Russell Westbrook who had one of his finest games of the season and if it weren’t for it being a blowout he probably would have grabbed another triple-double against Minnesota. He was two rebounds shy, as he tied a career-high in assists with 15 and also added 18 points on 7-11 shooting. This game just had a Westbrook feel, if that makes any sense. It felt like he was The Man, the guy in complete charge of the show. He was the orchestrator, the conductor driving the train.

One thing about Russ: He looks like a point guard. I wish I had a game on my DVR from last year and could just use to compare it to the way Westbrook looks now. He’s in complete control of the game. He’s smart with the ball. He’s managing and running the team. He’s just more comfortable with the ball in his hands. He’s doing more no-look passes, more threading the needle and playing with a real confidence. I didn’t think someone could necessarily develop court vision, but it kind of seems like Westbrook has.

Notes:

  • The pace of this game rolled in at 96, which is pretty darn fast. And I think that’s a lot of the reason for Westbrook’s success. He absolutely thrives in that type of environment. Open floor, flying down the court and making quick decisions. It’s where he’s best. I kind of think Scott Brooks has visions of opening up the game and running a little more in the future once Westbrook gets a complete grasp of it, the team gets control of it and most importantly, they don’t lose anything at the defensive end.
  • Durant scored 25! Oh wait…
  • But seriously though, 25 on 8-17 shooting with nine rebounds. That’s quite a nice ho-hum night. Durant was electric offensively in the first quarter, quieted in the second and went to the locker room with 16. He did look a little frustrated at times, especially after the third time he had the ball poked away from him on a run-out.
  • Nenad Krstic must have read the post about the third quarter today. 3-3 in the first quarter for six points.
  • All five Thunder starters were in double-digits and seven players total.
  • How good was Serge Ibaka tonight? He scored a career-high 14 points, had two blocks and pulled in three boards. But his most impressive play was when he stole a pass and ran a fast break, dropping a beautiful bounce pass to James Harden for an and-1.
  • Kevin Durant’s drilled a nice pull-up 3 with about 1:30 left in the first quarter. I swear he worked on that exact play for 15 straight minutes before the All-Star Game. Just over and over and over.
  • It was behind the scenes night on the broadcast. The went to split screens and showed producers talking and directing and stuff. I didn’t get much out of watching a guy sit at a switchboard with a headset. No thanks on that.
  • Westbrook really showed something with about 4:30 left in the third. KD was out on the wing, desperately calling for the ball. But like a smart point guard that had control of the game, Westbrook pulled the ball out, settled the offense and called a play. The Thunder made four passes, moved the ball around and Westbrook ended up with a layup after a nice bounce pass from Krstic. A lot of guards would have throw Durant the pass, but Westbrook wanted to run a set and he took charge and got it done. Just a nice display of floor generalship.
  • It was nice having Nick Collison and Ibaka back. A combined nine rebounds and 24 points.
  • Jeff Green quietly had a great night. He had 13 points and six rebounds, but really seemed to be everywhere on the defensive end. Tipping pass, jumping in passing lanes and playing tough on the block. Nice game for Uncle Jeff.
  • Have you ever watched Brian Davis while he announces? Try it sometime. Just kind of glance over at him on press row while the game is going on. He’s motioning, he’s grabbing Grant Long’s arm like he’s Uncle Leo, he’s gesturing. It’s a show man. Brian Davis is really starting to grow on me. His enthusiasm is contagious.
  • Thabo has kicked up his offensive game. Ten points, all coming in the first half. He makes great cuts at the bucket and finishes well. But how about his defense tonight? The block on Ryan Hollins was just tasty.
  • HUGE thanks to everyone that came to the pregame party. We had an awesome turnout and for our grand prize gave away courtside tickets to the game. So if you didn’t come, you should have.

This game was a perfect restoration of confidence, both for the team and the fans. I almost can’t believe I had ANY doubts that OKC might slip a little. This team is good. It’s games like this where there’s a focus and an energy that good teams have. Coming off a tough back-to-back they take care of business – and I mean TAKE CARE OF BUSINESS – at home. It’s what Denver does. It’s what the Lakers do. It’s what Cleveland does.

Now I’m not saying this team is on that level, but when the engine is firing like it was tonight and Kevin Durant can kind of take a back seat role in the offense, this group is downright terrifying. Of course this was against a semi-hapless Minnesota squad, but this is the NBA and these are professional athletes. And Oklahoma City took it to them tonight.

Next up: Sunday at home against the Raptors.

Yeah, this is making me sad I wasn't able to make it the other night. I'll clear my calendar for the next month to make sure I can be at the next one.

...til then I'll just be really bored, I guess.

@Royce Young
That's more like it.

@f5alcon
So we're the same age then.

Dang, I wish icouldve come. If you canput one together for the march 10th hornets game, that would be sweet. I'll becoming down from Tulsa for that one

crazy good game. We were awesome on defense. I wouldve hated playing against us. Of course, since I'm not very good at bball, that would have made it bad, too. :)

Osano-Whoa :@Royce

Really? You went with a baseball metaphor?

Er, I'm pretty sure it was a SLAM DUNK THREE-POINTER AND-1 BUZZER BEATER.

@Royce
Really? You went with a baseball metaphor?

I'm bored as hell. nothing to do

I'll get to working on it. I'm pretty sure last night was a grand slam.

@girlballer

Ha! You fooled me. Though, I did tell Mrs Jax that I never thought that people not interested in posting would still read the crap we post in the comments enough to know who people were.

We're ready for the next one Royce. Put it together, we'll be there.

@GAP

And I thought I was being so sneaky. ;)

I talked about having patience and letting them improve the offense next season, but I might reverse myself and say I hope they play the best lineups and run the right offense and take the right shots in the playoffs. I'd rather that not just be "practice".

Westbrook- Sefolosha- Durant- Green - Collison has been a fine lineup. It is the 2nd most used but I'd hoped they'd use it more in the playoffs than the 2 minutes a game they have been using it.

Westbrook- Sefolosha- Durant- Collison- Krstic deserves more than 1 minute a game.

Westbrook- Harden - Durant- Collison- Krstic deserves more than 18 minutes for the entire season. (It did fabulous by the way.) Will they use that in the playoffs? Or wait 'til next season?

@girlballer
It's true. GAP did tell me that before I went up and talked to you. It was cool talking to you.

@girlballer
I knew it, I told J.G. that it had to be you because when we were talking basketball you seemed so to have a lot of knowledge about it. See you couldn't fool GAP! :-)

@Crow

Seems like that's what he's trying to do most of the time to me. Anyway, he should improve finishing inside.. it'd be pretty outrageous for him to continue at his current pace at the rim.

in above, should be ... don't "know off-hand"...

I don't if there a lot of plays were Harden would be better off trying to get fouls even more than trying to finish the shot but it is a question, an option. If you can sell it.

@Crow

Harden definitely lacks the explosiveness of a Tyreke Evans or Russell Westbrook, and it hurts him finishing in the paint. But I think his size will give him an advantage as long as he learns how to use it. He has to study Paul Pierce, who's probably a bit more athletic but uses his size very well near the rim and especially from mid range..

How much Westbrook would want to back to LA I don't know but at this point the team has to keep him very content.

Logically Washington should be a team that tries to target Durant. I don't think he even considers them without a GM change though.

If everybody thought of as being core really is then that is a larger core than normal by far. It might be harder to keep all the guys near the back of the line for getting the next contract (like Harden and Ibaka) than the top dog. What they pay Westbrook and Green and if they can get both to commit will be key. (When will they gets asked if they are happy and plan on staying? It will eventually come up.) I now have more reason to believe Durant is agreeable to staying at least for a moderate length second contract. But have to hear what gets said and done about an extension this summer for further clues.

@girlballer
It was nice meeting you as well.

@Jax Raging Bile Duct
Well if you were feeling old I was feeling like a kid. I think Falcon was the only other guy there that looked even close to my age.

I am so excited for the future of this team. The rate at which they've been growing is so phenomenal that it's hard to gauge just what I should be hoping for. I know I should try to stay conservative, but the explosive development of Westbrook and my own innate optimism are urging me to really go overboard.

justin, obviously most hope they will add a new big man. I do as well but the wait may be longer than we'd like. If they can do all they want to keep the current core and get a big man, great. If they have to make a trade-off I hope they make the right one. Insufficient big man play is a common and easy way to fall short of your goal.

I think backup PG is still up for grabs because Maynor hasn't nailed it down. He still has the best shot but no guarantee.

Harden is in a ticklish situation. He probably has to get a lot better to get where he wants to get. I can live with that, if it works. Wonder if he might be helped by being a little lighter.

Houston has had Yao for 8 years. They have 4 50+ win seasons, 5 playoff appearances and one series win. Do they have upside? I am somewhat skeptical.

Hornets have had Paul for 5 seasons. They've had 1 50 win season, 2 playoff appearances and 1 series win. Do they have upside? I am somewhat skeptical.

There obviously more stall-outs at some modest level than very high or complete successes.

Thanks for the Brooks comments Jax.
The plan will proceed on its timetable and with its priority order.

I am more willing to be patient than in the past. They've done a lot right. But the expectations are pretty high now, especially for next season. There are teams that get this far and then stall out. I don't think that will happen but plenty left to do.

I wish we had a game today.

I had fun meeting you as well. It is good to know that there are others that are amped/slightly obsessed about our team. Every seemed nice and cool last night. Isn't that our city's m.o.?@GAP

@Jax Raging Bile Duct

And I only thought you would be "gray haired" because you seem so wise, and like to call down the cat-fighting that occasionally breaks out around here!

Very cool meeting you guys too! My husband said I chickened out by not disclosing my screen name though... Jax's wife seemed REALLY cool, so that upped his cred immensely! She needs her own screen name perhaps?

I thought it was a great turnout considering the stereotype of bloggers would not lead one to the conclusion that many would be willing to enter a bar alone and strike up a face-to-face with (seeming) strangers.

@J.G.@GAP@Osano-Whoa@Jax I was the one in the red Westbrook/Durant/Sefolosha etc. shirt BTW

Jax Raging Bile Duct :@J.G.
Mrs. Jax thinks it’s hilarious that you said I was an upperclassmen. I’m now taunted with her chants of “you’re OLD, you’re OLD!”.
I figured you to be older than you were, and I met some folks who thought I was going to be grey-haired. I guess we’re just going to have to start dropping some recent pop-culture references and get our youth cred up to date!

Word.

Wait..I think I just did more damage to our young ages than good.

@Crow, @justin

I dunno if you guys caught the post game interview with Coach Brooks or not, but I thought it was pretty interesting. We say a lot of things on this board that sometimes we infer from bits and pieces here and there, but it's nice to hear it right from the horse's mouth so to speak.

http://www.nba.com/thunder/video/2010/02/26/wolves...

Included in the above: "Russell isn't a traditional point guard, and that isn't what I want him to be..."

Also, and this relates to your posts Crow, "I know there are things on offense that we need to do to get better, but that is not our focus right now. Our focus is on defense, and that isn't going to change, at least not for the rest of this year."

It was nice to hear because it lends to the thought that next offseason there will be a focus on the offensive game. It also puts some perspective on how Brooks chooses to let Russell play. In his mind, he's not a traditional point guard, so he lets him do what he's good at, such as rebounding the ball. That just reinforces what we thought all along, that Brooks was trying to emphasize personal strengths over traditional methods, and adjust accordingly.

@J.G.

Crow, I think we'll see better offense from the team next season when we (hopefully) have at least one better finisher big man, James Harden learns how to make a layup, and Russ becomes more adept with PnR.

We definitely need to take and make more threes. This is where the utility of Thabo Sefolosha really comes into question.

the second post is the complete version
sorry for the first accidental post

If there is a fiendishly clever master plan for the offense I'd think it could / should go like this:

1) We want guys to take it to the hole, so we aren't going to emphasis the 3 point attack right now. Go inside.

2) We want guys to be able to create 1 on 1 'cause you always have times when you need that, so run a lot of simple 1 on 1 stuff and let them practice doing it on their own.

3) Yeah, the mid-range is an inefficient shot, we aren't blind to that, but you still got learn to hit those to beat the best defenses and keep them honest, so go ahead knock yourself out and practice them too as much as you want. For now.

4) When we get the next pieces and further develop the ones we already have we'll really put in the full, properly mixed offense and enforce the right rules. We'll get and take more 3s and allow less mid-range and we'll pass more for easier shots while we can, yada, yada. So relax. We got it all planned.

Either that is the plan or I am still missing it.

@morgan
Haha. See, now after having met you, that's EXACTLY the type of comment I would expect.

@Jax Raging Bile Duct
The milk stout was good. It reminded me a bit of a scotch porter in terms of complexity and powerful flavor. Also, somebody took my advice and bought the last of the coop imperial stout before I got around to it. :)

I had a great time last night. It was good to meet up with so many of the people I've seen post on here, as well as some of those who don't. It's nice to have a community of people that love the team here, as I don't really know anybody in real life that cares about basketball.

And thanks to the guy who sold me a ticket last night, I'd have happily watched the game in the bar, but it's always better to actually be there.

I think it is fair to conclude that in the emphasis on defense they held back on offense to force these guys to learn to win with defense. Pretty long range disciplined & clever. But I wonder how much they are still holding back on what they ultimately want and will do on offense. Guess it will sorta trickle out next season. No reason to hold back then.

I think the drawing was rigged...next time i'm going to pay more attention to the whole process.

@iBlocka
You had me all amped up after the game with your enthusiasm about that Ibaka play, I must admit you seem like a really cool and fun guy.

Anonymous :@J.G. I was kinda hoping you’d your memory wasn’t that sharp, but who am I kidding your the great J.G., oh and LOL at the Jax description spot on!@Jax
Raging Bile Duct Sorry man, I wanted to chat it up with you, I asked everyone where you was, but when I finally found you, your coolness kept me at “Hey, i’m GAP” LOL. Defintely will next time bro.

I don't know why I keep forgeting to sign in before I post now.

I loved Westbrook taking up for Durant after the hard foul in the fourth. I think our teams confidence is allowing them to show a little more emotion.

The foul on Maynor with less than 2 min. left should have been flagrant. He took a stiff forearm to the face.

Also, as a iBlocka fan, the steal and dime brought me out of my seat. I reminisce of Blake Griffin going coast-2-coast at OU.

Oh, awesome party even though I got there late. We definitely need to do it for away games.

Huge thanks to everyone who came out to the DT party last night. Kind of felt like a reunion...only if I had absolutely no idea what anyone looked like and could only feel as if I knew them once they told me their internet posting name. All in all though, I had a great time and had a blast getting to meet everyone. I even got to walk down memory lane with GAP about our first ever Draft debate.

And like Jax, I was blown away at how many cool people read the site but don't post. We're a much larger community than I thought.

@Jax Raging Bile Duct
Hmmmm, I think that might be the nicest, most awesome yet simultaneously unsettling thing anyone has ever said about me. But since we're both clearly huge fans of Patrick Dempsey (is this where I use a pause?), I'm totally fine with it. So it'll have to be other people who take it odd. Haha.

Kudos to Mrs. Jax for making the trip and for everyone who couldn't make it, Jax reminded me of a cross between that cool and funny upperclassmen that everyone could share a pint with and a wise and calming John Lennon-ish vibe. If those two make sense.

There was even a Minnesota fan who dropped in on the party...and won a shirt!

The DT: We're here for all NBA fans, folks.

Thanks for the links crick. The defense got a detailed breakout and respect.

The pregame party was really cool. Nice to meet you guys.

I googled Mike Martz, after meeting his mimic last night, and I have to say, martzmimic is a perfect moniker.

JG is like a young, smooth, cool Patrick Dempsey. You can't really "Pause" something like that, but I do mean it in a totally straight way. If you can believe that.

My wife bought me a Harden "Must be the beard" shirt last night. Then James goes and has a bad game. Maybe I'll leave the shirt at home next time.

Osano-Whoa and Bryan were cool dudes. I met Gap but we didn't get to chat it up, so count me in for some of that next time we get together.

Mrs. Daily Thunder was a big hit with my own wife - and it was cool chatting with Royce and finding out how small the world really is after all.

I even met some daily readers who don't post but wanted to say hi and hang out, and they were cool. Basically, everyone was cool, I guess is the point I'm trying to get across.

Osano-Whoa, if you read this post, did you like the Left Hand Milk Stout?

All in all, I'm in for the next event. When is it again? This Sunday? SWEET!

I should've added that Dagger's comment begins with:

"Collison is a very smart defender. While they don't have ONE guy who is the last line, the moment someone is under or around the rim, they have a bunch of athletic guys who are all going after the ball trying to block/alter that shot or strip/steal the ball."

in particular, from that thread, you gotta read Dagger Three's comments about the Thunder defensive strategy -- it's excellent:

Dagger Three analyzes the Thunder defense

I can't link to a single comment, but you can start reading from that point.

kinda early since the game isn't until tomorrow, but posters are lining up

the Torontonians (Toronto-ites?) seem quite concerned about the outcome!

Nice win last night.

Did it seem to anyone else that KD was a little snarly most of the night? He seemed a little out of sorts. Maybe it was because of those three or four strips. That would get me snarly too. But then you look up, and his stats are up there where most players would consider to be a heck of a good night. I hope we never take this guy for granted.

Westbrook.....oh my goodness. I hope we never take this guy for granted Part II.

On Brian Davis, the thing I really like about him is that he just absolutely loves his job. You get the feeling he wakes up in the morning and thinks to himself, "they *pay* me to do this?" He also seems very genuine. Nothing phony about him comes across. Grant Long I think is a little more low key, but you can tell that Davis' enthusiasm rubs off on him. And the two obviously enjoy working together.

Sorry I missed the get-together, but the person who won the court side tickets was actually picking them up for me, so feel free to send them along. :)

ok, we might want to frame this one...

photographic proof that Krstic actually can leap more than 2 inches off the hardwood

Krstic actually CAN jump, a little

Just came across something interesting.

SportsPageMagazine.com has a collection of NBA game photo galleries. One of them is the Thunder/Suns meeting in December -- you know the happy one in Phoenix where we won.

Here's the OKC/Phoenix game gallery

The pics are very high quality. For example,
