Wednesday Bolts – 1.20.10

thunderbolt23If you haven’t seen by now, Sports Illustrated’s Chris Ballard penned a nice long feature on the Thunder and Kevin Durant. I thought it was excellent. The issue hits the stands today, but you can read it here.

Shoals exploring the Hawks-Thunder relation: “Plus the Hawks, unlike the Thunder, have been a running joke, then a glorious mess, until Principal Mike Woodson finally succeeded in instilling some common sense in the kids. But now, there’s no way around it: These two teams, despite some notable differences (OKC drafted its superstar, ATL signed its; OKC front office and coaching is top-notch, ATL still questionable), these two teams are the closest I’m seeing to real … I don’t know, change, adaptation, even progress.”

Vince Thomas for NBA.com writing about KD: ”So KD has the prospect of finishing the second half of this season as the unquestioned Man, not just on a young team, but a young team trying to beat back and overtake more experienced teams for a playoff spot. And you know what? He loves it. “That’s what I dream about,” he said. “About beating the pressure and challenge of carrying a team to a championship.” And it didn’t sound like lip-service to me. That’s what this kid is about. He’s as good as any 21-year-old has ever been in the league (yep, LeBron, Shaq, Magic Johnson, Jordan, Isiah Thomas included). What he’s doing is already scary. Five or 10 years from now? An absolute nightmare.”

ESPN’s Award Watch has Durant fifth in the MVP and first for Most Improved, Thabo fourth for DPOY and Scott Brooks second for Coach of the Year.

The West is best and the Thunder prove it: ”Here’s a nugget you might not know: The Oklahoma City Thunder leads the NBA in inter-conference victories. Their victory Monday night in Atlanta pushed the surprising Thunder to 15-4 against Eastern Conference opponents. Not bad for a team which won only 23 games last season. They’ve won 23 already this season. The success of the Thunder against the East (they are only 8-14 in their own conference) drives home the point that, once again, after a one-year blip, the Western Conference, top-to-bottom, is the best.”

HoopsWorld says OKC and Charlotte make for nice stories: “Oklahoma City and Charlotte might be the best stories of the first half of the NBA season. If either stays the course and makes the playoffs they could be the best story of the NBA for the entire season.”

SI power rankings: “Is there such a thing as a moral victory? If it weren’t for two one-point losses, to San Antonio and Dallas, the Thunder would have come away with a 4-0 week. Oklahoma City has been resilient on the road all season; its 10 wins are two more than it had away from home all last season.”

Darnell Mayberry writes how the remaining schedule isn’t as easy as it seems: ”But there’s nothing easy about the last leg. The Thunder closes the season with a 14-game gauntlet that should feature: Eleven games against teams likely fighting to improve their seeding or to make the playoffs. Five sets of back-to-back games that include second-night tests at Boston, Denver and Portland. A critical late-March homestand against the Spurs, Rockets, Lakers and Trail Blazers.”

@Omar

It's also similar to Portland two years ago. They were right around .500, and even over a few times by a game here and there, then they just couldn't get those last few wins they needed to break into the playoffs. They wound up 41-41 even after losing 5 games in the last 6 or 7, plus a 13 game win streak where they were feeling really good.

Where we're at right now sort of reminds me of where the hornets were during their first year in OKC at the all-star break. They were well above .500 and looked playoff bound but then totally let it all fall away in march and missed the playoffs.

Happy that we're winning and that we're much improved, but 41-41 ain't gonna cut it to make it to the playoffs. Last year, Utah went 48-34 and they were the last team in in the West. I fear we might still be a year away, but we are on our way, at least.

I would actually be okay with Presti trading away Thomas, Harpring and one or more draft picks for a future lottery pick. That way, he still has room to add someone in free agency if he chooses AND, if for some reason he has trouble getting all his core players resigned or if there is still a glaring team need (or even just a slight need to push them over the edge) they would be able to bring in a young talent high in the draft.

If you could get that future 1st rounder AND a 3pt specialist in the same deal.... BONUS!!

@Bryan
Agree on both points:

1) I could actually see us hitting 40 wins relatively early, then struggling a bit to get above 45 down the stretch.

2) The more I think about it, a big deal seems less likely. We still don't know where the ceiling of this current squad is--after all, almost all of the players are still improving and much of our team progress will be based on that. I don't think Presti is like most of us (obviously, Rhodes nominees and 32 year-old GMs aren't born every day), and his eyes don't get all big when he hears a name like "Bosh." Instead, I think he sees the game as a puzzle, and sees areas of need, rather than attractive players. If we pick up a guy like Bosh, we're severely compromising our future salary flexibility, and also probably giving up the ability to sign/retain other players. I'm sure he would also agree that if signing a guy like CB4 makes us long-term contenders, he would pull the trigger. But we can all rest easy knowing that our organization has perspective, and is concerned not only about making the right move for the here and now, but also for the future.

So while I definitely expect some kind of deal sometime soon, I also think we'll see Presti ride the current iteration of this team to the end of the season without drastic alteration. Guess we'll see.

Sorry, that was as novel. I think out loud too much.

I am pretty sure 2nd year players are ineligible from winning MIP because 2nd year players are supposed to improve from their rookie years.

@Dylan
Nice. I think I'll give that its own thing.

The Thunder really need to put together a nice win streak or two over the next month to gain some ground and give themselves a cushion for that rough stretch in March.

I'm guessing that Presti really likes his basic pieces, Maynor, Westbrook, Harden, Thabo, Durant, Green and Collison long term. And, not being one to give up early on young talent (See: Westbrook), I'm guessing that Mullens and Ibaka are relatively safe as well unless a REALLY nice deal comes along.

That leaves Thomas (who I've decided is not playing so that he does not get injured and ruin his tradeworthiness as an expiring contract), Ollie (who belongs on staff), Weaver (who could easily make it into rotation on another team) Kirstic (who could be a VERY valuable sixth man for a playoff team) and Matt Harpring's expiring contract.

Thomas and Harpring's contracts are useless after the trade, so SOMETHING is going to happen very soon. I don't expect Presti to make a huge trade, but I can't see him just wasting his assets.

Yo, Royce, add this:

Kevin Durant has the 15th most popular jersey in the NBA

Defense man Defense. And a good team. No way the second or third worst team in the league has award winning players.

KD' pick is too high to get MIP.AND if they want to give KD this award,why not last year?

@f5alcon
What makes me so confident is that our success is based on solid defense. If we were the Suns, and we depended on scoring 100+ points every night, I'd have a bit more trepidation. After all, some nights, the shots just don't drop.

But you can always play with effort, close out on perimeter shooters, and make it tough to get easy baskets.

yeah it would be a real letdown to lose after the good game against the hawks.

@f5alcon
Agreed, it's a bit weird to feel like certain games are "gimmes," but this is about as close as it gets. Let's improve that Western Conference record!

Unless we play horribly, we'll walk out of Minny with a win tonight.

Well tonight should be a win, kevin love is out sick tonight, So aside from al jefferson we are better at every other position, KD should have his way with wilkins on route to his record tying 16th consecutive game of 25 or more points under the age of 22
