View from the enemy: Howlin’ T-Wolf

Lock up win No. 24 and let’s move on, right? Not right. It’s not because there could be a potential letdown after the big win in Atlanta Monday. I don’t think this Thunder team is really a letdown kind of group. It’s because Minnesota isn’t as bad as their record says. I’m serious. Talent is on that roster and they’ve been competitive, especially as of late. The way they’re playing close but yet losing reminds me a little of OKC a year ago.

Minny can beat good teams. They beat the Nuggets in Denver, which isn’t easy. They also beat Utah and the Jazz are a good team. So the Thunder could easily fall as well. All I’m saying is that while yes, OKC should win, I just don’t think we can put this one in our pockets and skip on to the next one. It’s still worth watching. And no, Fox Sports Oklahoma didn’t pay me to say that.

Minnesota coming in: The Wolves beat Philly in overtime on Monday night and have lost four of five and eight of their last 10. In January, they’re 2-9.

THE MATCHUPS
Good news for the Thunder as Kevin Love is likely out tonight with an illness. So that should help ease some of the advantage Minnesota was sure to have on the glass. But still, Al Jefferson is a gifted big man than has wonderful post moves and is a thread for 20-15 every night. It’ll be center by committee tonight for OKC as Nenad Krstic and Serge Ibaka (no Nick Collison still) will have their hands full.

But one matchup you’ve got to love: Damien Wilkins vs. Kevin Durant. Not only will KD have a chance to torch our old friend Damien, but Wilkins just don’t match up well. He’s much shorter than KD. He’s slower. He’s not a gifted defender by any means. Durant should cruise to his 16th straight game with 25 or more points.

How about Corey Brewer against Thabo? Talk about some length. Brewer has some scoring ability and athleticism, so Thabo will certainly have to watch him. I don’t know anywhere else Thabo would really guard as Wilkins isn’t a huge threat and Ryan Gomes who started in place of Love isn’t a big threat either.

Jonny Flynn has been the main offensive catalyst for the Wolves lately, but I like Russell Westbrook on him. Westbrook is bigger and stronger, and possibly faster. And with the way Russ is playing, I’m pretty confident in him going up against most anybody. But Flynn is no slouch as a defender. Here’s where I talk about how Flynn came from the “rough and tumble” Big East and is “tough.” But my name isn’t Jay Bilas so I’ll refrain.

The only way Minnesota shocks OKC is if someone comes out of nowhere with a big game. Maybe it’s Wayne Ellington off the bench. Maybe Damien Wilkins gets hot. Maybe Brian Cardinal has a career night. I’m sorry, that last one is just funny to think about. But someone getting on a roll is definitely possible. This isn’t a total gimme. But regardless of all factors, this should be a win for the Thunder. You can live with losing a tight one to the Spurs or Mavs, but dropping one on the road to the Wolves just shouldn’t happen. But still… I’m a little nervous about it.

Tip at 7:00 CST. Go Thundah.

The best teams probably have 2+ high frequency in the clutch / capable guys.

There are about 30 guys who take a lot of clutch shots and do it well. Maybe another 50-60 who chip in well on modest or low frequency of shots. Thunder will need to this part running better for clutch wins in big games.

Clutch stats are pretty small sample sizes and can change quickly. Next year and year after Durant and Green will probably be whatever they are going to be in the clutch... and pretty much most other ways I'd say.

Sure. I wondered what it would show.

@Crow
and Crow comes through in a clutch...lol

Thanks for digging that up... always fun to see if my eyeballs know what they are seeing.

justin :And I really do think we take Kevin Durant for granted..

Seriously, yes… lol…
His jersey is only 15 this year, actually I wonder about last year. Even David Lee sells more jersey…

David lee plays for the knicks its the biggest market in the country

@Crow

The whole team is bad in the clutch on offense, and it's because our offense is stupid.

Harden is weak in the clutch so far. Same for Ibaka. Maynor untested. Nick has hit every clutchtime shot he has taken this season but he hasn't taken that many. Thabo typical. Krstic hitting 67% eFG% on these but also rarely taking them.

IMHO... If KD is not on the court to draw 2 or 3 defenders for his teammates... You've got to be a Kobe's level type of superstar to even try to do the game saving attempt or be a clutch player.
That's why sometime I think many people take KD for granted.

Clutch Statistics at 82 games
(4th quarter or overtime, less than 5 minutes left,
neither team ahead by more than 5 points)

this season
Durant 37% eFG% (same on jumpers and inside)
Green 27% eFG% (he will hit his inside shots 67% FG but not his jumpers 13% FG)

last season
Durant 39% eFG% (he hit inside)
Green 51% eFG% (he did better on jumpers)

Green and Durant both took more of these shots last season.

Who else is taking them?

Westbrook last season 42% eFG% on about as many takes as Green and less than half of KD then.

Westbrook this season 42% eFG% and the attempts are up a bit. Right now the best option of the 3- strictly by the numbers. Few are very good at this.

@Bryan

And why would we go to Durant? What does game saving attempts even mean??

andrew :@Bryan

Why don’t teams double team Green and deny him ball at the end of games then?

Because they know we will go to Durant every time... Maybe someone should go back over the last season and a half and count up game saving plays v. game saving attempts... bet Green has more saves and a higher percentage of saves.

@Velvet Hoop

Nobody 'knows'. I was in the crowd May 7 1994 when the Sonics lost to Denver. The 'worse' team can win, and no series is safe.

Usually, the more talented team wins. Usually, the more productive team wins.

@Bryan

Why don't teams double team Green and deny him ball at the end of games then?

@justin
I do agree that KD probably should be POG every game, but really, I understand giving it to others occasionally. In fact, I think it's good to recognize when other players happen to have an above average game, despite how awesome KD is nightly. Thabo and Collison are the ones that usually deserve this, but Ibaka has had his nights and so have the rest. I don't know if Green deserved it tonight, but honestly, it's not like it's something that matters at all. They don't keep track of "Local Players of the Game" or whatever. It's arbitrary mostly, so there's nothing wrong with other people getting it. And, I think KD would want other people to get it - he seems like that kind of guy.

@andrew
And that was the least nice thing I've seen posted on this entire thread.

@Bryan
I love Durant... but he chokes late. He just does.

andrew :@Bryan

That is the least intelligent thing posted on this entire thread. Jeff Green is a better clutch player than KD? Wow…

Yes... was last year too.

@Bryan

That is the least intelligent thing posted on this entire thread. Jeff Green is a better clutch player than KD? Wow...

@Bryan

????? Kevin Durant scored 6 points in a row to win this game (our last six points BTW), was I watching a different one? Jeff Green's plays were nice but without KD's run we're toast.

One of my friends said that if Beasley in thunder he would be better than KD.But I cannot imagine what happened if MB and Russ is tammate

Green is neither hero nor loser... Give him a little more time. I think he is just tired of playing in Durant's shadow... esp when Green is the better clutch player. It's just growing pains. It will pass.

How do you know? We haven't been in a 7 game series against the best teams. All it takes is one "punch" and who knows what might happen. Teams have been upset in 7 game playoff series' before.

I enjoy watching the Thunder win basketball games.

Kevin Durant is putting up 31.4PPG on 52.1$ from the field and 58.1% from 3pt range (and 90% from the line) in January. That's completely insane, he should win player of the game every game, really.

Also getting almost 8 boards a game with that.

I thought RW was playing pretty good lately, but tonight was really bad... Played like the old (regular) RW that I'd seen. He was totally killing his own team most of the game. And his jumpshots were falling so it made his game uglier, and he was forcing a lot because of that.
Green, I am not trying to give him credit but the block and the invinsible heel... I can't believe that, the refs didn't see RW's out of bound and Green's but they saw KD's... Man, talk about bad refs... lol...
KD was playing pretty good tonight, beside the 4 TOs. But, it seems like he needs a little bit time every game to get himself into the zone. He always has many TOs in the beginning part of the games, then settle down a bit and reduce his TOs to either zero or maybe one afterward most of the time?" He did carry the team when it's needed and seem like he's doing better on that now too. One thing though, KD, "why the heck you missed that FT in ATL? Otherwise, he would be 7 games in a row for 30 pts or more again after tonight's game.
Overall, this game was below average but the questionable calls went to Thunder's favorite tonight. And KD came up with his average game (31 pts, 10 rebs, 3 asts, 4 tos & 2 stls). That's what we are customed to see now so that's his average game...

@Velvet Hoop

It helps but what I meant was we don't have enough talent for it to really matter in a seven game series against the best teams.

If we build a winner and manage to keep the chemistry we have going it'd definitely be a good thing..

@GAP
yeah right now with tiebreakers houston is 4-2 record against the other tied teams, suns are 2-1, we are 3-3 and utah is 0-3

It's weird, I don't think Cavs fans take Lebron for granted, though they are also in constant fear of his leaving. Laker fans don't take Kobe for granted, but the majority of them are also arrogant blowhards. Durant has to be the quietest superstar in the entire league. The very fact he does't win player of the game EVERY game is a Greek tragedy.

Really? I could've sworn that in the history of sports, less talented teams have sometimes beaten more talented ones, even if they statistically didn't measure up. That's why they play the game.

BTW that Miami loss to the Bobcats by 1000 points is even more funny because apparently Michael Beasley predicted an 'easy win'.

@Velvet Hoop

Chemistry and heart won't beat the Lakers.

@justin

I agree. I think KD would get player of the game every night though.... they may just give it to someone else to not get so monotonous.

Or they could be reading the thread and just want to piss all of you guys off....

That coast to coast drive and lay in by Kevin Durant that The DON commented on earlier in the game was a special play. When you consider that he's the same length as LaMarcus Aldridge and can do things like that it's really amazing.

Stats don't measure chemistry or heart. :)

justin :
And I really do think we take Kevin Durant for granted..

I think the entire league does. Sometimes I still forget that he's just 21. I mean, when I was 21, I was making like 7 bucks an hour and spending it all trying to sleep with sorority girls. At the same age, Durant is building a championship contending club.

@Velvet Hoop

We could win more games if we had a better starting PF (or C). :)

RANDOM NOTE:

They are interviewing jerry stackhouse right now on NBATV and they asked him what young players he likes to watch and the first name out of his mouth was "kevin durant". He was like "he has freakish length and the way he scores is just unbeliavable"

I like that we won, you think I'm bad now imagine if we lost this game..

I agree that Al Jefferson would look fantastic on our team. He'd be the ultimate second option.. I don't think he's meant to be the featured player, but as a second option he'd be unstoppable.

Exactly. Everything evens out. More often than not, the play of our guys puts us on the winning side of games, even if they don't play well during the entire game. When it comes down to it, that is the only stat that matters.

What's more efficient, 23 wins in 82 tries, or 24 wins in 42 tries? I wish I had a calculator handy.

Booyah!

And I really do think we take Kevin Durant for granted..

we played well against san antonio and dallas and came away with losses. we played poorly tonight and got a road win. I know that context matters, but I certainly will sleep better tonight than I did after the Spurs' game.

i love justin's posts but sometimes that guy just likes to hear himself talk

GAP :
Also, we’re 6th in the playoff seeding!!

You just set off moisture in my regions that don't see a lot of sunshine

@Dylan

I've said plenty of positive things about Durant, Maynor, Harden and even Ibaka who all played very well.

what kind of miserable person chooses to focus on nothing but negatives following a franchise-record* 24th win? Every team lays eggs like this occasionally

Keith :
Oh, I love trade rumors.
Did anyone see Jefferson carving up our frontcourt? He would look mighty fine in a Thunder jersey.

Jefferson is so hideous, he wouldn't look good in any article of clothing you put him in

6th in the playoff seeding!! let the other B.S go and enjoy our playoff position for at least tonight.
