View from the enemy: Roundball Mining Company

(Channeling Les Miles) This is NOT what we wanted. It’s NOT what we planned, today. It’s not ideal for Oklahoma City to be 0-1 on this homestand facing a potential four-game losing streak against the very talented Nuggets. But if there is good news, it’s that Carmelo Anthony might not play. The Denver Post says he likely won’t. (One reader emailed me when Tim Duncan didn’t play in OKC and said, “The evolution of an Oklahoma City NBA fan: Instead of being upset the other teams star isn’t playing, we now celebrate when he’s sitting out.” Yep, perfect example with ‘Melo tonight. Don’t play ‘Melo. Rest that ankle.)

Knowing the potential magnitude of this game and the way the Thunder faded in the last one, you’ve got to think they’ll come out excited and focused in this one. There aren’t any must-win games in late January, but Oklahoma City kind of needs this one. So we’ll call this one a kind-of-need game.

Denver coming in: The Nuggs are hot. Hot like fire. They’ve won 10 of 11 and eight straight. They last played Wednesday night against the Rockets in which they won without Carmelo. But they aren’t a great road team as they’re just 10-11 away from the Pepsi Center. That’s encouraging.

THE MATCHUPS
If ‘Melo plays, we’ll have the marquee scoring matchup of Durant v. Anthony. That will definitely be fun. Last time, Durant “won” the head-to-head, outscoring ‘Melo 32-31. But if he doesn’t, it’s former Cowboy Joey Graham taking on KD. Graham isn’t bad, but I mean, come on, how can you replace ‘Melo?

The one matchup that OKC just never seems able to counter is Nene. He always pummels the Thunder inside with a barrage of dunks. Obviously Nenad Krstic can’t match him and Nick Collison is too small. Serge Ibaka is the hope but I don’t think he’s ready to shut down someone like Nene.

Chauncey Billups is a tough guard for Russell Westbrook mainly because Billups can hit mid-range jumpers. Westbrook has issues there because of addiction to going under screens. Thabo against Aaron Afflalo is all defense, though Afflalo can hit an open 3.

The Denver bench is strong with Chris Andersen, J.R. Smith and Ty Lawson coming off it. Overall, OKC just doesn’t match up well with Denver. Some teams do. The Thunder just can’t seem to match the Nuggets’ size and strength.

Oh, and insert mention here of the weather and how you should be careful going downtown. But you know that already. It kind of sucks because this is a really important game against your division leader and the crowd will be sparse because Oklahoma has been turned into a skating rink. Hopefully that doesn’t affect the energy of the team. Heck, maybe they’ll play better because they’re great on the road and most times there, they’re playing in front of an empty arena.

Tip at 7:00 CST. Go Be Safe Driving to the Ford Center.

Wins feel so much better don't they? No need to drive off any bridges tonight!! :-)

I've got to say, my favorite part of this game is KD getting a block with one shoe.

hey lookee

* KD is an all-star
* Russ and Harden go to Rookie/Soph game
* Thunder blowout Denver at home (revenging last year's 2 heart-breakers)

Suddenly -- ice and snow notwithstanding -- the world is a wonderful place!

:)

Off topic but Cleveland shot 44 free throws against Indiana tonight and Indiana only shot 5. Amazing.

wins = good
blowout wins = very good
blowout wins against a top-level team = TOTALLY FRIGGIN AWESOME!!!!!!

Hard to believe the Nuggets won consecutive games against CHA and HOU without Melo, they looked awful.

I'm....

VERY HAPPY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Our "good wins this season" category is getting full!(and that's a good thang)

nice win, yall! Still proud of these young cats...

Definitely needed that. Some nice signs from the offense in the second half especially, and the defense was great.

@justin
ha. It was a pretty impressive block too; boy's got some serious ups.

Nice win, boys.

nice big win, needed that

Johan Petro being blocked by Serge Ibaka is just perfect..

I guess Brooks just figured he'd rather let Serge and Ibaka get the minutes, which makes sense.

I love Etan Thomas and all, but he doesn't need trash time. I mean I suppose we could probably put him in at point and it wouldn't really matter now.

Nene only has two rebounds for Denver. That's nuts.

Yeah how does Etan not get into this game?

Did Etan Thomas kill Scott Brooks' dog or something?

Haha. I can't believe that hit.

Everyone's had good moments in this one except Maynor who hasn't played much..

The defense has been great overall, and the offense has been pretty good despite some weak stretches..

lookin' good

folks, I think we've got a W here!

(cross fingers)

Collison is having a quietly excellent game overall. Maybe not stat-wise, necessarily, but he's doing all the right things.

Westbrook has had just a tremendous defensive game.

The DON :

justin :
Jeff Green’s had a nice half offensively..

That sounded a tad forced, as if to shield yourself from the “why do you hate green” complaints for the next time you let loose on him

Heh, give him a break. At least he's acknowledging that JG is doing pretty decently this game.

Russ is short arming those free throws.

Denver's shooting 37% from 2pt range, unbelievable..

Denver still only has one offensive rebound in this game.

Denver pretty much looks like how I'd imagine our team would look if KD were out.

thunder offense look so much better with harden

Nice to come home to that last half of the third quarter. We're really playing some spectacular basketball right now, and Denver is listless.

What a third quarter.. can't believe Denver's been winning these games without Carmelo, they have looked horrible. Some of it's our defense, but man are they a sloppy team. JR Smith sure isn't shy about shooting either..

Gonna give props to the starting five for playing well in the 3rd quarter..

I'm very nervous that Denver is still in this game as well as we're playing..

what in the hell is going on? hahaa

Nice couple plays by Thabo there.

eesh, messed up another one - let's try again...

Somehow we end up shooting 50% for the half, lead by six.. Denver's playing really sloppy, doesn't have one offensive rebound.

Need to get to the line more and attack the basket..

Jeff Green's had a nice half offensively..

Sooner or later krstic needs to come to terms about his hair...

I think some of the defensive schemes are changing, I've noticed some more zone being played here and there.. different kind of switching, and our guys looking a little more flat footed and 'thinking' on defense.

Thabo hasn't looked right the last few games IMO.

Pretty egregious rare defensive miscue by Thabo. How do let JR Smith roam the perimeter with the ball in his hands and not stick to him like glue?

I can't believe Denver does not have one offensive rebound.. excellent job in that regard.

I don't understand why Ibaka doesn't dunk more in traffic. He's got the height and the hops, and he's definitely strong enough. Such a higher percentage shot than his finesse layups.
