Wednesday Bolts – Maynor Edition

Eric Maynor is supposed to play tonight: “There’s no question it’s going to take him some time to pick things up,” thunderbolt2Brooks said. “We have to learn things about him and vice versa. From what I’m hearing, he’s a very cerebral point guard who understands the game. He’ll be able to pick things up. How soon? We don’t know.”

Maynor’s reaction: “just got traded to Oklahoma city………………..i wus always told everything happens for a reason………” And I think Maynor summed up the deal nicely: “me and matt harpring for some dude.” Some dude indeed.

John Hollinger’s take: “That they took it off the table this early, prior to most of the serious horse-trading beginning, says something about the quality of the deal dangled before them. Boozer’s opt-in proved costly for Utah, depriving the Jazz of Maynor’s services while further strengthening a potent division rival. Meanwhile, Oklahoma City’s inexorable rise continues apace — today the Thunder nabbed a good young point guard, and because of the insurance provisions, they got him for peanuts.”

Marc Stein: “This deal was typical OKC opportunism. Thunder general manager Sam Presti took advantage of his low payroll to snag yet another good young asset in Maynor by absorbing a contract that is not only expiring (at $6.5 million) but also heavily insured because of the knee and ankle injuries that have forced Harpring into television with NBA TV this season.”

Dime: “If you ask me, this trade is a win-win for both teams. The Jazz get some much needed cap relief in packaging Harpring’s deal with Maynor, and the Thunder get a legit backup point guard for Russell Westbrook. While I totally understand why they let him go, I’m still holding out hope for Livingston. Hopefully he can land on a new squad this season – or at least put in some work in the D-League.”

Chris Tomasson of FanHouse: “The Thunder could use Harpring’s contract in another deal before the Feb. 18 trade deadline. Due to it being an expiring contract and the insurance situation on it, it could be a very attractive piece. “It doesn’t matter to me,” Harpring said about being on Oklahoma City’s roster but not needing to report due to his physical being waived. “It just means my checks will come from the Thunder.”

SLC Dunk: “Losing Maynor though kind of hurts because he’s a solid player and could be a good PG in the league. He would have been one of the last players I thought would be traded.”

Chris Webber on the Thunder being contenders for a playoff spot: “They are not contenders. Let’s make them earn it, let them lose a heartbreaker and then come back the next year. I just don’t want to crown them. The NBA is really tough and whether you go into the playoffs under 500 or above 500 it is tough. Not many teams are making the playoffs consistently anyway so I would just say that they are just a contender to be a really good team in the future.”

James Harden sits fifth in Thorpe’s Rookie Rankings: “Harden is still struggling from the field for the most part, but he’s showing signs of life on that end. His game against Detroit, however, could serve as a blueprint for him for the rest of the season. He finished with 14 points on 5-of-11 shooting (2-of-3 from deep), eight assists, one block and one steal. With the talent around him in OKC, that’s the kind of game his team needs from him. More than just a willing ball-mover, Harden has the ability to lead guys to buckets with his passing — a talent found mostly in point guards.” And hey, Eric Maynor is 20th!

Ball Don’t Lie, behind the box score: “Kobe Bryant: He’s just so good. Just oozes greatness, this cat. Oklahoma City gave the Lakers a scare, to be sure. The Thunder raced out to a good lead in the first half and hung around for the entire contest before falling short offensively in the second half, and during that time Kobe started with all the troddin’ and treadin’ and stompin’ on the other end.”

J.A. Adande: “The Oklahoma City Thunder had earned this moment, the right to have their say on the outcome of the game. Russell Westbrook wanted this moment, and wasn’t going to let anyone or anything deter him from taking the 3-pointer that would send the game into overtime or send the Thunder to their 14th defeat of the season. You had to like the determination in the second-year guard’s face, the confidence he had in himself even though one of the best defenders in the league, Ron Artest, had stepped out to guard him. “You live for moments like that,” Westbrook said.

Last night was the first time KD ever fouled out. He was a little emotional about it: “And yes it was my first game ever fouling out…and yea My eyes teared up lol … I’m emotional bout this dog..it’s my life…can u blame me?”

Robert Swift appears to be done with basketball: “Without knowing the specifics of Swift’s Bakersfield abandonment — remember how weird the fan situation is there, with essentially a country club setting of a 550-seat arena with cigar rooms and fine dining — you could surmise Swift is sick of playing the games (basketball and the politics behind it) and wants to start over. He’s made more than $11 million at this point. Assuming he saved some of it, he could very well stay on his feet well outside the spotlight. I, for one, am rooting for him, even if I wish he’d give basketball another spirited shot.”

Story on Scott Brooks from the OC Register: “Coaching in the NBA can be tricky. “You can’t wear the same suit for two straight games,” Scott Brooks said Tuesday. “If you do, you’re going to hear about it.” Especially this year, when people actually stop flipping when they run across the Oklahoma City Thunder.

@C.K.

Ever? Yes. Remember, Serge is just 20. Give him some time.

-- And if we don't go for a Center next, what do you think we'll get?? We're stacked at PF, PG is good with Maynor now, SG is got a good rotation... so I guess a solid backup SF unless Uncle Jeff becomes KDs reserve, then we can get a PF. That's good too because this year's draft is stacked with big guys.

@Royce
Do you think Ibaka could ever handle Dwight, Stoudemire, or Yao?? I'm not sure if I'm sold on that yet.

@Warren
I would trade that. haha, if Mullens does become a more athletic version of Krstic, I think he poses as a great trade aspect, seeing as we don't need an athletic center- but we need a solid rebounder and a defensive presence.

I think Ibaka is good at center for us now, but when we matchup with Dwight Howard, Kaman, Ilgauskas/Shaq, Stoudemire... he is a lost cause. I hope he can develop a defense to hold his ground.

Sorry I seemed to have missed the party my post earlier started... but my wishlist goes:

David Lee
Bynum
Camby
Jefferson
the Gasols (both)

And here are two I'm iffy about and want to know what you think of... Stoudemire and Perkins. I think they could potentially fit in good... but I would expect more defense from Stoudemire, and I love the huge presence Perkins would bring.

I will go on record as saying that I am a fan of BJ Mullens. I think he will be a good center in the league. He just needs some time and he will surprise some people. At the worst he will be a more athletic version of Krstic. I would take that.

I really want Mullens to have a good career, I don't even care if it's with us or not. He's been through a lot, only to be vilified (sort of) by fans of the team that picked him before even stepping on the court.

@Kev
Probably trading him to land that quality, long-term center. In a perfect world, we would grab Marc Gasol or Al Jefferson for this team. We literally have no presence in the post, offensively, and we need it badly. Jefferson is a crazy good post scorer when healthy, Gasol has proved to be much much better than anticipated. Of the two, I actually think Jefferson is more available. His value is low, so we could slightly overpay and get Minny to bite. Further, Minny is making no money, winning no games, and already has a young post guy ready to be the man. Jefferson is their highest paid player and their financial future is going nowhere right now.

Sure, Jefferson is a bad defender right now, but if Brooks can teach Green and Durant to do it, he can teach anybody. He has the length and athleticism to defend the center position, he just needs the motivation and teaching.

Steve H :@Kev I’m really hoping that Ibaka becomes our dominant PF of the future, playing along-side a quality long term center to be named later.

what are you doing with Jeff Green?

@Kev
I'm really hoping that Ibaka becomes our dominant PF of the future, playing along-side a quality long term center to be named later.

@J.G.
Shoot, I gained 5-10 lbs just during Thanksgiving alone. A guy like Ibaka can do that easy over the summer with a good workout regimen.

Honestly, if anything, I just wish Ibaka was about two inches taller. 6'10" is perfectly tall enough to play center, but think if he was an honest 7 feet tall...

J.G. :@Royce@Kev
Except that he’s physically more suited to play PF…unless the Thunder A) Change their style of play to a more up tempo offense or B) Bring in a bruising PF.
If anything, last night proved to me that Ibaka can play the 5, but will be at a disadvantage at the position. Of course if he gains about 5-10 more lbs and changes the way he plays, I’ll change my thoughts.

good points - there aren't really anough legit fives in the NBA . . . I like him playing there instead of these high cost guys that dont really add much to the offensive side of the ball . . .

I am hoping he gets better offensively - he was 4-12 last night. That is unacceptable for anyone, and definitely horrid for a post . . .

@Royce

Kev :
I think in two years we will realize that Ibaka was the long term center we were looking for all along . . .

I really agree with this. Like I say all the time, Presti is about development and I think he's willing to be patient with Ibaka and even Mullens. He's a project that needs to be fleshed out.

dork :@justin
Actually as far as onball smart physical defense Ibaka does do this! His defensive issues are off ball help issues. Kev can you backme up (unless of course i’m WAY wrong) it appears Ibakas on ball post defense isn’t that bad. The BBIQ part may be true at the moment… but at the rate he picks things up, according to the coaching staff, his bbiq could be alot higher at the end of the year if he continues to get playing time.

Ibaka is doing well defensively - does he have some room to grow? Yes - but all these other guys would bring similar results at much higher prices . . .

@GAP

Yeah he will probably spend next year the d-league as well and and another summer league and he should be a decent prospect

@justin
I think you are over-estimating the number of teams out there that are both in need of a serious up-grade at center,that would be financially able to absorb aditional salary to get there, and that are not already hoarding all of their acorns to land or re-sign a max-contract type in 2010. I think you are also under-estimating the value of our ability to clear salary space for teams on the eve of the free-agent Gotterdamerung. Golden State can't get comparable value back trading existing talent for existing talent. Making lateral moves like the Jackson for Diaw swap doesn't help them re-build, and man do they ever need to re- build. Our ability to flat out eliminate 16 mill in salary next year AND throw in 3 quality picks in a deep draft makes us fairly unique. G-State has 53mill committed for next year, giving them a little room for FA shopping without paying a tax penalty, but not much. Trimming that figure to 37mill can/should make them the highest bidder for guys like Boozer and Bosch. Plus, Biedrins impending return aint gonna put them in the play-offs, but it might very well hurt the value of their own lottery pick. I don't see any-way to re-build the Warriors without either clearing a bunch of salary, or acquiring a bunch of picks. This does both.

I really like Biedrins too, but would he fit in with the Thunder's core players? And, no offense, but I would trade Green for Marc Gasol or Jefferson. I like the guy but he's out of position at the four but has lots of upside for other teams at the three. I think our four should be Ibaka and Collison for this year and get a good five that can take up space, rebound and block shots. Krstic is nice, but isn't a starter for us in the future. By the way, love the blog!

Stephen :@Vega
He’s soft and fancies himself a shooter. He would have to bulk up and change his approach to the game to become a legit NBA center. I hope he becomes a superstar, but obviously I don’t expect that to happen.

He might fancy himself as a shooter, but he's averaging a double double in the D league right now. This is mere months after seeing him play scared in the summer league. Even coach Brooks says he knows the whole playbook and can tell you all 5 positions (now thats IQ), also we want to give every other person a chance on the team but him it seems.

To answer Vega's question, I could see him developing into a nice center for the Thunder if given more playing time in tulsa then some with the Thunder.

Hey ya'all, the tattoo theory is now debunked. Check out all the artwork on Maynor!

Can't wait to see Maynor in action tonight... One of my favorite things about the NBA (now that I'm fully converted from NCAAB) is the whole mid-season acquisition thing.

justin :There should be a BJ Mullens shirt with just a picture of his eyebrows on it.

I absolutely love this idea!

@Mark!

...well I didn't want to put the patron saint of all things " yea sure you need some cash. I'll help just give me your kid."

@dork
I thought Chris Wallace was the patron saint of all trading partners?

@dork

yeah, maybe royce needs to make a t-shirt with "in presti we trust" and have his face on $100 bill

@f5alcon

Isn't he the patron saint of all trading partners?

I would love to acquire Biedrins but I just don't see how it happens without giving up at least Jeff Green + picks or taking back Corey Maggette, neither of which are attractive scenarios.

The reason being that if Biedrins were available, there are other teams in the league that I think would take back Corey Maggette with him or give up a young piece for him.

If we could get him without doing either of those things, of course you do it, but I don't see him being let go that cheap. Other teams would offer more.

maybe we all need to start praying to an idol of presti

@justin
What do you think of this idea to land Biedrins. Thomas and Harpring's expiring contracts (+the multi-million dollar insurance buy-back that comes with Harpring) plus our two first rounder's and T-Wolve's 2nd pick for Biedrins and Radmanovic. Radmanovic is playing so well he is getting booed at home games, and is slated for 6.4 mill this year and 6.8 next year. This would clear 16 frigging million off of next years salary obligations, giving them crazy money to spend in the much heralded "freeagentpalooza" that is 2010 (only 37 mill in salary obligated). If they are really looking to rebuild, I think that would be hard to pass up.

@Vega

The Warriors are projected below the salary cap for the next several years, they don't have that much more money to 'save'.

odds of getting biedrins is probably lower then haywood or bosh, even if he is a better fit

@justin
The franchise is for sale and they're trying to cut salary. Plus, their management is inept and their coach is insane.

@Vega

If Biedrins was available for picks and expirings he's be gone already. Stephen Jackson demanded a trade, Jamal Crawford was a fifth wheel. Biedrins is their young center on a reasonable contract, why would they trade him for picks and expirings?

maybe we can kidnap him change his name and make him wear a wig, and claim we found him somewhere

@Jax Raging Bile Duct
Jamal Crawford for Speedy Claxton and Acie Law IV, as well as Vlad Rad and Raja Bell for Stephen Jackson. They're asking for peanuts for good players. We could probably get Biedrins for picks and expirings.

@Vega

Even less of a reason for them to be thinking of trading Marc Gasol then.

Gasol is probably th ebest target because he also has a low salary and we still could afford a big name FA, if we had him even wade, lebron might have to think about coming here, we would be title contenders. imagine a lineup of westbrook, wade, durant,green, marc gasol, with maynor, harden, thabo, ibaka coming off the bench. Or get Bosh as a FA and have westbrook, harden, durant,bosh, marc gasol, with maynor, thabo, green and ibaka off the bench.

that would be amazing

justin :@Jax
Raging Bile Duct
You would trade James Harden or Russell Westbrook for Andris Biedrins?

Yeah, I think I would. I think good solid centers are rare, and solid guard play is much more common.

@justin
The Grizz are barely over the salary floor, and they've cut a deal with a Euro team for Jaric. The Euro team will apparently pay some of his salary so they can borrow him for this season, so even Memphis's last remaining bad contract is taken care of. We have no service to offer Memphis that they would want in exchange for Gasol.

@f5alcon

Erm.. more than that. Teams don't give up centers for nothing, especially cheap centers. We won't get Marc Gasol without giving them Jeff Green, probably with picks and taking back a bad contract.

@Jax Raging Bile Duct

You would trade James Harden or Russell Westbrook for Andris Biedrins?

marc gasol has good numbers 14.8 PPg on 61% FG, 9.9 RPG, and gets 2.3 AST and 1.5 BLK and 1 STL. and is 24 years old. but with memphis having thabeet for the future they might give him up, but it would cost a lot, probably both 1st rd picks, DJ white and harpring

Just FYI in 10 December games, Sam Dalembert: 7pts, 9rbs in only 24mpg.

@Vega

I love what Noah brings. He's also a good friend of Thabo's. But he might not fit personality wise, I don't know about that. I know the Bulls won't shed him, but this was a wish list, so he's on mine.

I'd do whatever it took to get Biedrins or Lopez; which means I would do anything short of trading KD.

@Vega

The benefit of trading for players that will be free agents is that you acquire their Bird Rights so you are able to offer them the most money and contract years in the offseason. For example, if we traded for Bosh during the year (we won't), when the offseason comes we have an advantage over other teams since we can give him more $$$.

@Jax Raging Bile Duct
Marc Gasol would be a steal, not quite the felony of Pau, but a very strong misdemeanor to say the least.

He's playing at ALL STAR levels if he weren't in the Western conference. I've been very impressed when I've watched him.

@f5alcon

I'm not a huge fan of Bynum. And honestly, I haven't seen Marc Gasol play that much, so I should probably do my homework there.

I should add Pau to the list, you're right. I think of him as a PF, but if I'm going to put Bosh in the list, then I should put Pau in the list as well. Good call.
