Saturday Morning Cartoons: And now here’s six minutes about Grant Long

December 5th, 2009

I really don’t have a ton to add here. The awesome retro NBA footage speaks for itself, as does Grant’s unbelievable rec specs. But I thought this was appropriate since Long was a part of that hapless 0-17 Miami Heat team that no longer has to gather around like the ’72 Dolphins every time a team starts the season on a long losing streak. Thanks for your support of Daily Thunder. And thanks for buying shirts. Now go fix that creaky door your wife’s been asking you about.

Box Score

It’s hard to know what to say after a game like this. I’m no professional writer. I guess if you go to journalism school they may teach you how to channel your feelings into crisp sentences and tight paragraphs. Me, well, I just start hitting the keys and hope what spills out isn’t too gawd awful.

The picture is appropriate though. The first thing I began to think of after about half of the first quarter was a team getting totally handled; much like we did in the second match up against the Fakers Lakers. I guess it just shows how great that chasm can be between the “okay” or “pretty good” teams and the elite clubs in the NBA.

First the C’s came out and really really lit up the scoreboard in the first. They were 12/19 and 4/5 from deep and dropped 31 on us. In the meantime we were able to only put 20 on the board. It’s not like we weren’t hitting our shots (we were 9/15-60%), it’s just that they were getting all of the offensive boards and hitting threes. The threes wouldn’t fall for us for anything tonight. Time after time we had open looks from deep and they wouldn’t go down. That wasn’t because of superior Celtics defense, the wide open looks didn’t go.

But the Celtics did play very good defense. Very good defense. It wasn’t perfect and it wasn’t always foolproof, but I think at every position from the first guy to the last the Celtics were better at the team defensive concept. Read more…

View from the enemy: Celtics Hub

Color me excited for this one. Not necessarily because I see this as another chance at a large statement to the league. Not necessarily because I have real expectations of winning. Not because of anything really. It’s just that any time the Celtics come to town, it’s neat. The three previous things add to the excitement for sure, but just the fact that Boston is in Oklahoma City gets me psyched. Their tradition, their uniforms, their big name stars. It’s all very exciting. Read more…

Smart Thoughts of the Week: Nov. 27 – Dec. 4

December 4th, 2009

Throughout the week some of you drop some brilliant or at least somewhat thoughtful comments and so this is a try at highlighting some of them. Disclaimer: It’s not that I necessarily agree with all of them, but they were interesting and for the most part, well put. Consider everything [sic’d].SMTOTW

Home sweet dome. (Bryan): On the home record thing… I think it’s just a matter of a young squad having a hard time with the additional pressure of 18,000 screaming fans with high expectations. All the extra noise seems to help them on the defensive end, but when they get possesion and the crowd is holding it’s breath, they seem to crack.

I think they just need to build a little confidence with a few good wins at home and they will be fine from then on.

I would also say that the Thunder seem to genuinely strugle with teams after they have played them once already… it’s a small sample size but it’s starting to look like a trend. Five of the Thunder’s eight losses were to teams they had already played. They are 0-5 in the second half of two-game series. Read more…

Friday Bolts – 12.4.09

December 4th, 2009

Marcin Gortat is a bit unhappy in Orlando. Commence murmuring: ”Don’t get Marcin Gortat wrong: He wants more thunderbolt23than anything to help the Orlando Magic win a title this season as Dwight Howard’s back-up. But he told the Sentinel on Thursday that he eventually wants to move out of Howard’s immense shadow. “I love the organization, but I’m not going to stay here being a back-up player and playing five minutes a game,” Gortat said. “I hope people understand that. I know I can have a bigger role on another team.” Except that this season he just started a new five-year contract with the Magic. Only a trade can provide a bigger role on another team.”

OKC is ready for some trash talking tonight: ”All-Star Kevin Garnett has the reputation for being the league’s biggest trash talker. “If they want to talk, they can talk,” said Jeff Green. “We just have to worry about what we have to do. We can’t fall into their little traps of trash talking and them getting in our heads and get us playing out of our (game). We have to continue what we’ve been doing — sharing the ball and playing defense. “If they want to talk they can talk. If we win the game that will be our talk. We know they’ll come in amped (up) and they’ll talk a lot of trash. It is mostly Kevin, but guys feed off that. It goes into the way they play. I don’t talk at all.” Read more…

Peace, Love and Thunderstanding: Phi Delta Thunder

December 3rd, 2009

BroingtonsChemistry is a buzz word that gets tossed around a lot in sports, but is particularly involved with any conversation involving Thunder General Manager Sam Presti’s plans for his team.  The thing is, in those occasions, it might not be a cliche.

Not too long ago, I read two books that helped me to understand the inner workings of a modern professional basketball team.  Both, :07 Seconds or Less by Jack McCallum and Can I Keep My Jersey by Paul Shirley, happened to be at least significantly involving the mid-aughts Phoenix Suns.

I would imagine most people who visit this site are at least familiar with the tale of that team.  They were easily the most entertaining team to watch since Michael Jordan hung up his sneakers for the second time and behind Steve Nash, their brand of basketball exuded energy and excitement.  They won a lot of games and appeared to be having a crap-ton of fun.

The books painted an entirely different picture off the floor.  Some of the higher paid players walked around with a chip on their shoulder, and after the press left, the players generally went their seperate ways.  Their job was very similar to everyone else’s in that there was a hierarchy, politics, and the paycheck was the primary thing keeping them interacting with each other.

Thanks to the invention of Twitter, today you don’t have to be a league minimum earning bench warmer or embeded journalist to get a feel for how this Thunder team interacts with one another.  And what I have observed is good.  There is a true fraternal bond among these players.

And I really like the use of the word fraternal for these guys.  Aside from the fact that only a couple of the guys are old enough to where they would be called “non-traditional students” if they were still on college campuses, everything they seem to do reminds me of my days as a fraternity guy.

They live in big houses that a typical college kid couldn’t afford.  Most of their free time is spent playing video games.  Kevin Durant, Jeff Green, and James Harden kill time trying to become YouTube stars.  Some of them participate in stupid games like slap fights.  And if you listen to them complain about women in their tweets, you’d think they were struggling students rather than wealthy, handsome, and famous athletes trying to chase down starlets.  Sometimes, I have trouble remembering that I am following the word vomit of professional basketball players rather than CollegeHumor.com writers.

The parallels to an NBA Animal House don’t end there, though.  After the jump, I look at which role these players would play if they actually were living on fraternity row.  Read more…

Kevin Durant is NEXT

Have a watch and read the story. I’d pull some choice excerpts, but I assume you can figure out how to click the link and read the whole thing for yourself. But make sure to watch Russ interview KD. Pretty funny.

Thursday Bolts – 12.3.09

December 3rd, 2009

Darnell Mayberry on last night. An interesting take: “That’s what happens when a player as naturally gifted as thunderbolt23Westbrook thinks too much, when a natural scorer spends too much time trying to be a set-up man. You Thunder fans out there who want Westbrook to be John Stockton (you know who you are) saw what it looked like when he tries to be. And it’s precisely why Thunder coach Scott Brooks isn’t asking him to be.”

Nenad Krstic on his ankle: “I don’t really know right now (how severe it is), but I don’t think it’s too serious,” Krstic said. “But it’s a little sore.”

Don’t get your hopes up about Chris Bosh: “Not only will the Heat’s chances of signing Chris Bosh next summer be helped if the Raptors keep struggling, but a former Raptors official said Bosh doesn’t like Toronto’s cold winters. Bosh isn’t keen on playing in his native Texas but has said the Heat “seems to be an attractive place, playing with Dwyane Wade and playing in Miami.” Read more…

Oklahoma City takes care of business against Philly to go to 10-8

December 2nd, 2009

BOX SCORE

(AP Photo/Sue Ogrocki)

A ho-hum 117-106 win over a 5-14 team shouldn’t feel important. It should feel like business. But these have been the type of games Oklahoma City has sleepwalked through. So it is important, but at the same time, it’s not. Make sense? The game never really felt in doubt and for 48 minutes the Thunder played well and didn’t looked flat at any time. I think that means they’re getting better. Right?

I don’t know who was the most important player tonight. Kevin Durant and his 33 points, five rebounds and three steals? Russell Westbrook and his new career high in assists (15) to just two turnovers? Or Nick Collison who was 8-9 from the floor with 18 points and seven rebounds in just 20 minutes? I don’t know who gets the gold star, but all three were key in tonight’s win.

But what was that one shot the Thunder kept making where you got three points instead of two? What is that thing? Durant kept making them (5-7 from 3), Jeff Green hit them (3-6) and even Mike Wilks nailed one. As a team, OKC hit 12-24 from deep. Good thing too because Philadelphia shot extremely well, hitting 50 percent from the floor and 14-23 from 3.

The major, most glaring difference in the box score came on the boards. OKC pulled down 18 offensive rebounds and outboarded Philly 43-29 overall. Having Nick Collison and Nenad Krstic back obviously helped. Nobody dominated the glass (Collison led with his seven), but the key was Samuel Dalembert led the Sixers with just six. OKC owned the glass and as a result, took 11 more shots. Read more…

The Sixers are 5-13 on the season. By all accounts, a mediocre to poor team. And that terrifies the crap out of me. What have we learned about the Thunder after a month? Say it with me class. Games like this are not a given.

A win and you feel good because you’re 10-8, you took care of business and you’re on to the next one. A loss and you feel like you’ve taken a step backward. For whatever reason, OKC hasn’t been as good at home as we hoped, but games like this are ones you absolutely shouldn’t drop at home. Read more…

Move over Peyton Manning, Kevin Durant is taking over

December 2nd, 2009

ESPN’s new NBA spot is outstanding, and not just because KD is in it. Hilarious would be a good word to describe it. As for KD’s performance, I’d say it was a combination of Brando from On the Waterfront with a hint of Gregory Peck from Cape Fear. Really powerful stuff.

KD being on the cover of the new ESPN the Mag, the Hyperizers spot and now this, it’s safe to say that his profile has been raised substantially. He’s quickly becoming a household NBA name and more of this stuff is sure to come. Which is just unreal. I can’t get enough of seeing a jersey with “Oklahoma City” on it on a national magazine cover.

Wednesday Bolts – 12.2.09

December 2nd, 2009

UPDATE: Kevin Durant is on the cover of the next ESPN the Mag. And NBA.com has an extended Q&A with thunderbolt23KD:  ”NBA.com: How do your teammates treat you now that you have a semi-celebrity status? KD: I put myself on the same level as everyone else. From the first man to the end of the bench. Nobody has a “celebrity status” attitude here. Especially me. I always put the team first and without them I surely wouldn’t be the NEXT athlete or talking to NBA.com for articles. Once I step into this building for practice and games, it’s all about the team.”

The Thunder is taking over the world. On ESPN’s award watch, four players are mentioned: “Can Durant win MVP? Not this season. But he deserves props for having the Thunder in position to challenge for a playoff spot, while taking the next step toward stardom.”

The 66ers lost last night in Austin 89-72. Byron Mullens had 11 points and five rebounds and DeVon Hardin had six points, seven rebounds. Read more…

November down, December now: What should we expect?

December 1st, 2009

In case you haven’t been paying attention: After a full month of play, the Oklahoma City Thunder is one game December_2009_Style_3over .500 with a 9-8 record. I’m not sure how many of us saw this coming. We all knew the team would be better and there would be no 1-16 start, but this much better?

A winning road record, wins at Utah, San Antonio and Miami and a dismantling of the mighty Magic at the Ford Center. Back in August, I saw the team going something like 6-11 through the first 17. And I’m loving how wrong I was. But now November is behind us and today is the first day of December, a month that has Boston, Cleveland, Denver, Dallas, Houston, the Lakers, Phoenix and Utah all on the schedule. Another plus-.500 month would be huge, because the road ain’t easy. Read more…
