Kevin Durant has 100,000 fewer All-Star votes than Tracy McGrady

And McGrady hasn’t played professional basketball in a year. (link)Dallas All-Star Game

Now I know fan votes are messed up. This isn’t the first time these type of stupid issues have come up. Just last summer baseball saw a similar issue with Manny Ramirez. Heck, Ken Griffey Jr. still gets a TON of All-Star votes.

But doesn’t this really illustrate how this is kind of a flawed system? All-Star games are something we use to judge and evaluate player’s careers. And to a further degree, All-Star starting positions as well. And you’ve got one guy that is third in the league in scoring and is turning into a possible MVP candidate trailing another guy that is averaging 0.0 ppg, 0.0 rpg, 0.0 apg in 0.0 minutes per game by a full 100,000 votes. HOW STUPID IS THAT?

Again, I realize that’s just life with the fan vote. But that doesn’t make it any less ridiculous.

I voted for TMac. I'm also Asian.

Back in '04 I did a write-in vote for Artest since his play at the time actually made him deserve to be on the ballot. Plus they never actually said he was banned from the All Star game.

Its something you have to live with. When you think about it, even if it was based on actual game time play, how fair is it for it to be based on less than half of the first half only? The starters will always be a popularity contest and the reserves will be more legit since I believe those are chosen by the coach.

Because of the fan voting, Durant may not be a starter in the All-Star game this year, but he is a lock for a back-up forward position. Last year, he was not selected mostly because of his team's less-than-stellar performance in the first half of the season. This season he's averaging 28 and 7 while leading OKC to an above .500 record. There is no way he can be overlooked.

Honestly, let's just get rid of the fan voting.

I would be willing to bet that the Internet community, no matter what nationality, is the majority that does the voting.

Someone start the rumor that KD invented lolcats and 4chan, and McGrady is chair of the board on censorship. That should do it.

Wow that's all I can say is WOW!

The solution here is pretty obvious- We need to infect India with "NBA Fever" and add an Indian national to the Thunder roster. Take THAT China!

Yi Jianlian was nearly voted in as a starting forward in the east last year. Thanks to a (extremely fishy) sudden surge for Kevin Garnett, he didn't make it, but still. The fact is, there are nearly 4 times as many people in China as there are in America, and homerism is rampant in all fan voting. This is exactly why fan votes only count towards 1/3rd of NFL all-star decisions.

As for Durant, all I can say is that I didn't expect him to be voted in this year anyway (by the fans). Carmelo should have been the starting SF for years (thank you San Antonio for forcing Duncan to be considered a forward), and Nowitzki is still a former MVP and great player. Durant will be an easy pick for the coaches to fill in the roster, but it's going to take some serious love in the MVP race and a playoff appearance before Durant displaces Melo or Dirk.

i agree with this frustration about mcgrady. however, the bigger issue is that the all star game is for the fans. every year iverson gets voted in even though hes washed up because thats who people want to see. as much as many of us may disagree about the selections, for the nba it's about ratings. its sad, but true.

The title of this column explains why I (mostly) don't pay attention to All-Star Balloting . . .

I'm amazed at the dedication of some fans.

I probably just need to build an iMacro that will vote for me throughout the day.

Is it absolutely sad and pathetic that fan voting has come to this? Yes. Yes it is.

King gondo is right. Deadspin had an article addressing this issue today.

The China thing seems plausible.

You can direct your frustration across the Pacific to China... Lord knows if Yao wasn't deactivated in the offseason, he'd be the starting center too.

We need to get a voting drive together for KD, though. I (regretfully) haven't voted yet, either.
