Friday Bolts – 12.4.09

Marcin Gortat is a bit unhappy in Orlando. Commence murmuring: ”Don’t get Marcin Gortat wrong: He wants more thunderbolt23than anything to help the Orlando Magic win a title this season as Dwight Howard’s back-up. But he told the Sentinel on Thursday that he eventually wants to move out of Howard’s immense shadow. “I love the organization, but I’m not going to stay here being a back-up player and playing five minutes a game,” Gortat said. “I hope people understand that. I know I can have a bigger role on another team.” Except that this season he just started a new five-year contract with the Magic. Only a trade can provide a bigger role on another team.”

OKC is ready for some trash talking tonight: ”All-Star Kevin Garnett has the reputation for being the league’s biggest trash talker. “If they want to talk, they can talk,” said Jeff Green. “We just have to worry about what we have to do. We can’t fall into their little traps of trash talking and them getting in our heads and get us playing out of our (game). We have to continue what we’ve been doing — sharing the ball and playing defense. “If they want to talk they can talk. If we win the game that will be our talk. We know they’ll come in amped (up) and they’ll talk a lot of trash. It is mostly Kevin, but guys feed off that. It goes into the way they play. I don’t talk at all.”

James Harden at three in David Thorpe’s rookie rankings: ”There’s an axiom in basketball that shooters think about when they miss their first few shots: Just keep shooting because they will start dropping soon. Well, that just isn’t true. Confidence is a big part of shooting, and when a player misses multiple shots in a row, the rim tends to look much smaller. Harden learned this the hard way last week against the Lakers when he missed all 10 of his 3-point attempts (2-for-15 overall). Sure, Harden is a good shooter and if he keeps shooting the ball then at least a few shots will fall eventually. But 0-for-10 or 2-for-15 isn’t helping your team. Harden is capable of doing a whole lot more than just shooting. The next time he misses a few deep shots, he’d be better off looking to create an easier scoring opportunity closer to the basket or getting to the free throw line.”

Harden 10th on SI: “Harden has cooled off some after scoring in double-digits five straight games. The Thunder, however, have won four of their last six partly because of Harden’s improvement and playmaking ability. If he can develop some consistency he could help the Thunder make a run at a playoff spot by season’s end.”

Nice story from NBA.com: ”Oklahoma City wanted to step up to the big time and shed an image of being a cow town. That’s what a professional team can do, provide an identity. The improvements to the Ford Center were taxpayer-funded, and last year, the building was filled to 98 percent capacity. This year, it’s at 99. The Thunder will never replace the Oklahoma Sooners in the hearts and wallets of the locals, but they’ve carved out a generous spot for themselves. The trick from here is continued growth. The Thunder will likely have another lottery pick or two in the immediate future, which is needed for the building process, because OKC doesn’t strike anyone as a destination for A-list free agents. Having said that, if Durant and Green keep this up, OKC could turn into the place to be. Apparently, the locals already agree.”

Robert Vaden update! Right now, Darth Vaden is averaging 17.3 ppg, is shooting 31 percent from two-point range, but is hitting 52 percent from 3 (32-62). His last game, he hit 7-10 from deep. Keep it up Darth.

Nenad Krstic is questionable for tonight because of an ankle sprain. He’ll be a gametime-ish decision.

KD’s people are kicking up his All-Star campaign with this little poster. Vote for him.

It appears that every single DT-Shirt is gone right now. Thanks to all who bought them. Again, if you wear it out, feel free to snap a picture and upload it to the Facebook fan page. We should have more for your purchase next week or at the absolute latest, the week after.

@f5alcon
As far as this year's numbers go, I'm not hugely surprised that he's been disappointing. After believing that he would actually get a chance to prove himself as a starter, he was once again thrust behind the best center in the league. While certainly not admirable, some disappointment and, consequently, poor play is somewhat understandable. And what I was referring to is a large scale trend of players being given more minutes increasing their production. Although not foolproof, that trend proved true in a surprisingly large number of cases, most notably in cases of younger players like Gortat. That doesn't guarantee that he'll fit the mold of course, but I think that he's a young, legitimate center that fills our most glaring need at a fairly reasonable price. I still like him.

What's with all of this interest in old, washed up, placeholder bigs? That doesn't make any sense. Presti seems to like guys who will be around for the long-term. Both Tyson Chandler and Chris Kaman, two bigs he tried to trade for, are young enough to be considered part of the core. Zydrunas and Camby are a year or two away from retirement. I can't see Presti being interested in either of them.

Whether or not you think Gortat is overpaid depends on your definition of "overpaid". By NBA center standards, he is definitely not -- not when centers like Dalembert and Dampier make $10-12M a year. From the Magic's standpoint, it would appear so (hence the constant trade rumors).

The problem is that centers command a premium, because there are so few decent ones. So the price is higher, whether through free agency or via trade. I think if you can get Biedrins or Gortat without giving up a meaningful piece (ie, picks, Weaver, and White), you do that. I also think that such a deal is unlikely. I doubt that two picks in the range of 14-25 (the projected range for our picks) get a deal done. This isn't the NFL; NBA draft picks lose value significantly once you get below the top 10.

All that said, I'm curious as to the constant drum-beating on the board for a "shot-blocking, defensive-minded big man". Aren't we in the top 10 in defense? Hasn't this team been strong on the boards for the last year-plus? And, btw, we're fourth in the league in blocks this year (I know there can be other factors that affect that stat, but still.)

I think 4 out of Green/Krstic/Ibaka/Collison/FA vet (like Camby)/2010 big man can be a league-average frontline, with particular advantages in the playoffs from a matchup flexibilty standpoint. And I think if Westbrook develops, you would have a team that had an edge at the 1 (Westbrook), the 2 (the 2-headed monster of Thabo/Harden) and the 3 (KD). That team, to me, aims for 50 wins in 2010-11 and has a nice window at a title after that.

His numbers this year when his mins are up did not scale well, he hasnt played better with more minutes, he played worse, last year gortat had 11PPG and 13RPG this year is 8.8 and 8.8.

Even his coach said he is worse "Van Gundy said that Gortat, a hustle player, is lacking energy.

"He's not playing to the level he played at a year ago. He's not rebounding at that level. He's not running at that level. His energy level is not as high on a consistent basis as it was a year ago."

Really he had one ok season and a good playoffs, he is unproven and would be a huge risk, and we cant get him for free we have to give up a decent player to the magic to get him. We could give up less probably and get biedrins, whose per 36 last year was 14.2 PPG and 13.4 RPG.

Or just sign ilgauskus as a FA whose p36 is 17.1PPG and 10RPG or camby who is 11.1 and 10, or przybilla at 8PPG and 13.5 RPG.

I dont hate gortat there are just better options.

On another note i got my NWA shirt, so shipping took 2 days

@Anonymous
The writer obviously dislikes the team in OKC since he has Durant in a Sonics uniform and said that Robert Swift was dropped by Seattle.

I seem to remember the Tatooem-pole being dropped by OKC.

@J.G.
Or change them to a end of month recap.

I'll add another agreement with JG: like the Smart Thoughts, I think its cool that you recognize the commenters. But if its too much you can drop them without causing mass uproar.
And I'll register agreement with Jax too. Gortat can definitely play, but he's very under-utilized. And as for his somewhat underwhelming per36 numbers, I remember reading a lot of articles about how increasing minutes, especially for a younger guy on the rise like Gortat, actually tends to increase production. And not just from an overall, per game kind of thing, but from a per minute rate too. I think given the opportunity he's at least better than half the starting centers the league has, and a big upgrade over Krispy.

@f5alcon

It's unusual for a Center to play more than 30 minutes a game. Dwight Howard leads the League in minutes played for a Center at 35. That said, I'm sure Gortat would play very close to 30 minutes for several teams in the NBA.

Gortat's per 36 for last season was 13 rebs and 11 PPG and 2.5 blocks. That's a double-double, for the mid-level exception, for a Center. That's a hot commodity.

5 years 34 million is a lot for a player who has only played 87 games in his career. His numbers even at per 36 are not great 10 rebs and 12 PPG, and no way he would play that many mins as his career avg is 12. If he started he would be an 8-8 guy, nothing great

I hardly think Gortat is overpaid. If anything, I think he's under-utilized.

@vega would probably have to add a player to the deal, like weaver or white. Also there are a bunch of mid tier FA big men that we could try and get, camby, ilgauskus, przybilla. With mullens and ibaka developing we can afford to get an older player sign them for 2 or 3 years while our young guys develop.

Although Greg Monroe could possibly be available, and I love Greg Monroe for no logical reason.

If I were Presti, I would trade one or both of the first-rounders for a starting big man. If you look at where OKC and Phoenix are probably going to be picking, there is little chance that we will get a big that will do anything more than make the logjam at PF/C even worse. Guys that might be available include Solomon Alabi, Jerome Jordan, Derrick Favors, Ekpe Udoh, and Craig Brackins, none of whom would be immediate contributors. We might as well stick with B.J. and Chewie, cause adding another project big won't help. If both of the picks packaged together will net us a Biedrins, than Presti should do it.

though i highly doubt we keep all those picks, some of the 2nd rounders we might just sell for cash, or maybe trade for a pick in a later year.

Yep, two first rounders (our own and PHX's unprotected) and three second rounders.

@rohit
I believe that the only first-round picks we have this year or ours and Phoenix's.

@rohit
We don't own the Mavs pick. If anything we owe them a second-rounder for the BJ trade.

The Smart Thoughts are expendable, but… I also feel the Smart Thoughts give this blog a special connection to its readers. How often do blogs recognize their commenters?

@rohit

idk bout the mavs pick but i know we have PHX unprotected pick

I couldn't really find this info anywhere so I figured I'd ask it here...what 1st round picks do the Thunder have in this years draft? Their own, the Mavs, and another team, right?

@Omar
They could trade Gortat and get a replacement, like Etan or Collison, in return. Or they could get Kurt Thomas from Milwaukee to back up Dwight.

I enjoy them more when I make the list.

@J.G.
I'm pretty sure he wrote the piece about a month ago. The last game he mentions is our blowout against Orlando. Hopefully that means it's not a slight, just that he wasn't "known" by that point.

I'm with you on the Smart Thoughts. I really enjoy them, but Royce can dump them if it is just too much.

I don't see the Magic moving Gortat. They'll need him in the playoffs if they plan on making another finals run.

@Vic De Zen

overrated...overrated...overpaid...

Do the Smart Thoughts!
I am still waiting on my first smart thoughts appearance.

@Royce

I enjoy them... but not as much as game preview /wink /wink

Gortat... Gortat... Gortat...

@Royce
I enjoy them, kind of like a recap of the week's events, especially if we've missed some of the more interesting comments. But if it puts too much on your plate, I'd say it could be axed with minimal disturbance.

@dork
It's coming, it's coming.

Let me ask the class: Do you all enjoy Smart Thoughts of the Week? Or is that something we can scratch?

Hurry up with the preview Royce I am all kinds of excited about tonight! (not that I don't love the bolts:)

@Anonymous

*giggles* its amazing how many fans have no idea how the thunder operate.. I suppose this is mainly to blame on sports center showing highlights of the fast break stuff.

@Royce
I missed it to on the first read because all I saw was "Thunder lack a proven shot blocker" and then my mind wandered into, man what would it be like if we could get a 7 footer who blocks and controls the paint...and then I was on the sixth paragraph and couldn't remember anything I had read.

I emailed him about it to request a revision (in a nice way, of course) so hopefully he just had a literary lapse and forgot Thabo.

@J.G.
Wow I missed that during my skim over. Weird he would put that when clearly Thabo has gained a pretty good reputation.

Royce, the Powell article was good except for that one glaring omission, "considering the Thunder lack a proven shot-blocker or DESIGNATED STOPPER."

Hopefully he'll revise that pretty quickly. If not, we could just provide him with the link to the Awards Watch list for Defensive Player of the Year.

I read that article about trash talking and I must have been skimming because I thought it said KD was one of the biggest trash talkers. I was like... who in the world wrote this article? They obviously have no idea what they are doing.
