View from the enemy: Cavs the Blog

I don’t even want to hear it. I don’t care if you’re excited about this game because a certain player is coming to town. That’s fine if that’s what has you amped for this game. I’m psyched to see No. 35 in white and a 12-9 team that’s got a chance to really make a big statement with a win over one of the NBA’s elite.

That’s one thing the Thunder have had a little trouble sustaining: momentum. In this so far good season, the most OKC has won in a row is two. Tonight’s another crack at three. Of course it won’t be easy against LeBron and Shaq, but I like this team at home. I feel like this group is starting to sense the moment and understand what it takes to win games. Here’s another chance at it. It’s not the end of the world if they lose – heck, it’s kind of expected – but at the same time it feels like a win is very, very possible.

Cleveland comes in off a win at home against Portland Friday night. Before that, the Cavs dropped two straight roadies to Houston and Memphis. Most expected Cleveland to be better than 16-7, but these guys are still in the top five of the NBA and obviously with LeBron, they are tough.

THE MATCHUPS
I know some are probably excited at the prospect of Kevin Durant having an opportunity to show up LeBron. And while that’s definitely intriguing, I see this game coming down to point guard and bench play. Mo Williams is fairly inconsistent and we all know how up and down Russell Westbrook can be. Williams is averaging 16.7 ppg and 4.9 apg but isn’t playing near to level he was last year.

The Cavs rely mostly on Delonte West and Anderson Varejao to provide production off the bench. With Shaq being questionable with an eye injury, it’s likely Zydrunas Ilgauskas will start. James Harden has been such a huge boost off the bench for the Thunder and players like Nick Collison, Shaun Livingston and Serge Ibaka have actually made OKC’s bench into somewhat of a strength.

OKC should have an advantage at the four with Jeff Green versus J.J. Hickson. Hickson has been a pleasant surprise for Cleveland, but I just like Green there. I actually hope Shaq is able to play because I like Nenad Krstic pulling him away from the bucket and setting up a lot of pick and roll and pick and pop with Westbrook. Obviously that’s still there against Ilgauskas, but that’s been one way teams have really attacked the Cavs this year.

As for KD against LeBron, it wouldn’t shock me to see Thabo guard Bron for a good amount of the game. But I think Durant is up to the challenge. He might have a little trouble with James bullying him going to the bucket, but I think Durant has a chance to really match up well with LeBron.

Color me excited for this one and not because a certain No. 23 is in town. With the brutal stretch ahead, any win against these type of teams is big, especially at home.

Tip at 6:00 CST. Go Durants.

I think justin makes a lot of valuable comments.

@grant phillips

Well, like I said, if you disagree feel free to tell everyone why or share your own opinions about the team. If you have positive thoughts about things I'm sure everyone would like to hear them. Be constructive.

Calling me a 'TOOL' and basically responding to all my thoughts with some kind of banal response is not constructive!

It's just disappointing to see KD airballing big shots (Lakers game) and disappearing in the 4th (tonight), but I know he's young. I was just frustrated earlier. I have taken some deep breathes since then.

@justin

im pretty sure that i just said i disagreed with everything you say... that is my opinion. some things you just need to keep to yourself. believe me, i have many things that i keep to myself because i want to stay positive and want other fans to stay positive. but when i come on here and read your comments its hard to stay positive

grant phillips :
i hate this justin guy. TOOL… well i dont hate him personally, just what he posts… its garbage

Hey man, if you've got a problem or disagree with what I post here you're free to post your own thoughts or opinions. Everyone's not going to agree on everything but one of the important aspects of any community like this is that people don't take each other's opinions personally and stay civil. I don't think I'm too disrespectful of anyone when I disagree with them or have a different viewpoint, if I am let me know and I'll stop. Otherwise, please stick to basketball and if you don't agree with what I say post your own thoughts on the matter.

@The DON is SO hot right now
smh at you.

@Durantula

Thats the wrong question.

The right question is: at what point do we start to worry that westbrook will forever be a roadblock to KD developing a rhythm in 4th quarters, therefore be an obstacle to KD being clutch?

Kobe wasn't clutch for a few years and from what I have heard he is a pretty good player now. It takes guys 3 or 4 years to really become clutch, but it also helps if the guys around you help out.

@Durantula
he's been 21 for like 3 months, maybe we should wait a bit

At what point do we start to worry that KD is not a clutch player?

Colin :
The turning point of this game, in my opinion, was towards the end of the third. The Thunder had the ball, up 7, with 1:39 to go and Durant missed the three that would have put them up 10. Instead the defensive 3 happens, LeBron goes off, and suddenly the Cavs are up 2. Mo’s half court shot was the back breaker, but the last 90 seconds of the third was the turning point.

I just made that very point in my recap Colin. I completely agree.

The post game recap is up. Thanks guys.

8:32 left in the game and it's tied at 82. Cleveland hit three threes in the next 1:30 and here are our attempts after a Jeff Green put back that brought the game within one: Jeff Green three (made), Jeff Green three (missed), Kevin Durant three (missed), Jeff Green layup (missed), Jeff Green three (missed), Kevin Durant jumper (missed).

Then Mo Williams hit the prayer and it was pretty much over. We had 29 free throw attempts in the first three quarters and zero in the fourth.

@Colin
Its also hard when we only play 3 qtrs. Maybe 3 1/2.

@Warren

That's true. Its tough to win when only two guys (Durant and Green) are consistently making shots.

@justin
You also fail to mention that Mo also stepped up. I get what your saying but they (Cavs) stepped up and we wilted as a team. This, to me at least, was a team loss.

@The DON is SO hot right now

Yes you let LeBron shoot those shots. He was making 28 footers, if you meet him that far out he'll blow by and the defense will collapse leaving a real shooter open for an uncontested three. Thabo and KD were getting hands in LeBron's face on most of those threes except maybe that one in transition. That's good defense and you live with it. LeBron was 5-8 from downtown tonight, which was his best three point shooting night of the year. It wasn't for lack of effort.

@Warren

KD is our best player. LeBron stepped up and lead his team to the win. Kevin Durant couldn't do that. It isn't a knock on KD, really, since the defense on him was good. But he should know his own limitations and not force the issue. There was one particular 'heat check' three he took in the fourth when the game was only a four point game that really bothered me and just seemed like he was trying to get back at LeBron.

justin :Jeff Green played great on offense overall, I’d like to see more of what he did in the first three quarters.
The defense on Shaq was pretty good, and I thought the half court defense was alright until the mid point of the fourth when it started to unravel. The team looked flustered and seemed to lose intensity after Cleveland kept making those contested threes. I guess that’s to be expected with a young team.
The Cavs obviously keyed on Kevin Durant in the second half and he tried to do too much. This team has nobody to go to for offense behinds KD sometimes and he’ll try to force the issue and miss shots / turn the ball over. Russell Westbrook did not do Kevin Durant any favors on the offensive end.
It’s too bad everything unravelled beause for most of the game there was some great defense being played. After LeBron hit those threes it was obvious Durant and others were trying to ‘answer back’ and that’s just playing into Cleveland’s hands.
Chalk this one up to youthful indiscretion.

I agree with that.

thabo is an absolute liability on offense, (aka ben wallance) and yet he is our starting shooting guard who sucks at shooting... I like thabo but LB is going to get his, we need an offense punch to get ours.

We were tied up almost half way through the 4th, then we just kind of let the game go on offense. We were still forcing enough turnovers so the if we were scoring effectively with the 2 we could keep up with them, but it was like they just ran out of steam.

@justin
Yeah I totally agree, Harden sometimes is the best playmaker on this team and when your offense is stagnet you gotta take thabo out and put in a facilitator.

sweet, we just forced lebron into a turnover!

@justin
Sure do, the Thunder failed to show up as a team in the 4th. They as a team shot a horrid % from the field and went on to lose. So I would say that the Thunder choked as a whole, but I guess some people see this as an individual game.

@justin

Don't overlook the defense of Jamario Moon. He has the length and athleticism to make life difficult for Durant, who did most of his damage on the overmatched Anthony Parker.

justin :
The DON, the defense against LeBron James was good today. He scored 40, but most of that was either in transition (not Thabo’s fault) or on long jump shots, which statistically is where you want him to try to get his offense. I thought Thabo’s defense on LeBron was acceptable.

So what you're telling me is that when a guy is obviously on fire from the outside, and you keep letting him shoot all game and he finishes the night with 44 pts on 16-29 shooting from the field and 5-8 from three that is "acceptable" defense?

I humbly disagree

@Warren

Do you have a different opinion you'd like to share?

I must question why James Harden was on the bench most of the fourth quarter. Harden was making offense happen when he was in the game and at least he can shoot the ball if we're going to take three pointers.

@justin
Your one of those fans. Gotcha.

WOW Kd has been ice cold in the 4th. North Pole, Antarctic, Polar ice caps cold.

*pukes*

@Warren

In the fourth quarter Kevin Durant is 0-5 from the field with 2 turnovers, 1 rebound, and zero assists. I'd call that a 'choke job'

btw, lets not overlook the fact that westbrook was dominated by Mo Williams tonight. We could've survived this onslaught by Lebron but when Mo Williams is toying with you on top of that, you're not gonna win.

YET ANOTHER 3.....BY WESTBROOK OF ALL PEOPLE

I AM GOING TO THROW UP

KD needs to step up, but green is launching 3 point bombs, westbrook has done nothing, thabo is getting humiliated by lebron, harden has done nothing, and kristic is invisible.

The whole team is to blame.

They better stop feeling sory for themselves and do something right now. Their body language looks bad.

@justin
How is it a "choke job" by KD when every other player is taking the shots? If they dont get him the ball then he cant be choking. Geez man.

Cleveland is 8-16 in the second half from three point range. That is the game right there.

Had a feeling that was going in. Don't feel bad, I've personally been on the other side of a half court shot that was much worse.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lGcD_SalyxE

What a choke job by Kevin Durant. Does he even have a fourth quarter point?

Wow... that was a contested half court shot! Sometimes they just go your way.

ALL WE ARE DOING IS SHOOTING JUMPERS

That half court shot might have just sealed the game

AGGGHHH, Green falling in love with the 3 again

Love the flop, er I mean defense by Krstic!!

Cleveland is DARING our 25% 3pt shooting forwards to shoot threes. Jeff Green has to drive that basketball.
