Thunder! Basketball! Tonight! Woo. thunderbolt23

Reader Dylan sent along this amusing anecdote: “Fun fact: On NBA2k10, Hasheem Thabeet is a 57 overall. Taylor Griffin is a 62.” Your second overall pick everyone!

Somewhat interesting for all you wealthy Thunder fans: “The Ford Center, home of the NBA’s Oklahoma City Thunder, today announced Levy Restaurants as its new premium dining and hospitality partner. The partnership includes management and operation of foodservice in premium areas including the club level bars and restaurants, suite level including the new terrace suites and lounges, courtside club and new bunker suites on the lower level.”

Joel Brigham of HoopsWorld lays out his annual 50 predictions: “1. Kevin Durant will crack the top three in scoring this season … 24. The Oklahoma City Thunder, who won only 23 games last season, will improve upon that total by 15 or more wins in 2009-10.”

Thunder players and coaches visited classrooms at a MWC elementary school.

Darnell Mayberry had a Q&A with KD: ”Q: Can you gain momentum if you play well in preseason or does it not matter? A: It’s important for us to not take steps back. That’s the only thing is to always get better, whoever’s on the floor. I don’t think you can gain momentum because in preseason teams aren’t playing their regular five throughout the whole game. The bigger name players don’t play that much. But it does give us a little confidence going into the season. But I think we have to do our best by coming in here and practicing and working hard and also translating it to the games.”

Byron Mullens will likely guard Hasheem Thabeet tonight and Nick Collison was teaching the young rookie: ”Veteran forward Nick Collison pulled rookie center Byron Mullens aside over the weekend and gave the 24th overall pick a crash course in defending the paint. The lesson wasn’t complicated. In fact it was one of the most fundamental rules of post defense. Collison schooled Mullens about the NBA’s hand-checking rules in the post, teaching the rookie that a forearm to the back of an offensive player is allowed but an extended arm with an open palm is a foul. “That’s something I didn’t know until he told me,” Mullens said.”

Greg Oden is tired of the Durant talk: ”Perhaps it’s because the Portland Trail Blazers once drafted Sam Bowie over Michael Jordan. Perhaps it’s because Kevin Durant, whom the Blazers passed up to take Greg Oden, is having hands-down the better career so far. Perhaps it’s the injuries that have plagued Oden throughout his college and pro career. Whatever the case, Blazers center Greg Oden is already tired of hearing about how he was taken over Durant in the draft two seasons ago. “All I know is that I am on a playoff team, and we weren’t a playoff team before I played that season,” Oden told 95.5 The Fan in Portland recently. “That’s what I like to tell myself. I like it here, I have great teammates, they should’ve, could’ve, would’ve, but they didn’t. They got me and I am here and I am working hard. Whatever everyone says, they can say it because I am not worried anymore.”

The Thunder is oddly missing from this list of potentially surprising teams that includes the Clippers, the Kings and the Timberwolves.

Three weeks. 21 days. 513 hours. 30,780 minutes. Oh yes. Soon enough.

Easiest explanation of why the Thunder weren't listed as "perennial losers" in that Fox article... because they're a new franchise?

@Nix
I noticed that as well. I was very very high on Blair. But he really doesn't fit our logjam without getting rid of somebody like DJ or Ibaka, so we wait and see I guess.

DeJuan Blair got 19 rebounds last night...

I think we could have bought that pick from the Spurs. He would have been better than trying for Vaden.(Not saying Blair will be an amazing)

Robert :@MartzMimic
And I was sarcastic about his beard…sort of. The reason he’s ranked that high is because he’s ready. His athleticism is terribly underrated.

Yes sir!!! He was very impressive at the open practice. I was a little surprised by his leaping abililty. He reminds me of a mellow westbrook.

@Robert
I thought Harden was a 76 and Blake was a 77 on the game?

@Lucho

I think my pro basketball game purchase last night might have been my first since NBA JAM TE on the sega.

I picked up 2K10 last night aswell, first NBA game I purchased since NBA Showdown back in 93. Oh and the scoreboard looks nice.

@MartzMimic
I don't even own a video game system, but from playing at friends' houses, 2K produces the better basketball game.

@MartzMimic
I was the same way man. I went and got 2K10 last night and it's not bad. A fun little deal for a few weeks I guess.

And I was sarcastic about his beard...sort of. The reason he's ranked that high is because he's ready. His athleticism is terribly underrated.

@MartzMimic
2K10. Widely considered the best.

I'm almost afraid to admit this, but I've not purchased a basketball game for my Xbox in years. Should I go with NBA Live or NBA 2K10?

@Robert
Harden can use the beard to his advantage. I doubt many casual sports followers know who Josh Childress is, but if you say "guy with the huge 'fro,", you get instant recognition.

Hopefully, Harden will be known for more than his facial hair after a couple years, though.

If I could add to my post I would but since I can't I'll just say - I think the reason Harden is ranked so much higher is solely because of his beard and nothing else.

I can't believe Dylan didn't mention that Harden is ranked way higher than Griffin and Thabeet. Harden is a 72!

Collison was basically telling him how to get around the NBA specifics on the hand check rule, hence the context of the article is that Mullens was clearly aware of the rule, just not how to go about bending it like a more experience NBA player would be.

That's why they're called veterans. And that's why they have 'savvy.'

His inexperience with how to break NBA rules is the least of my concerns with Mullens...

In response to the Mullens quote, I'm betting that he knew of the hand check rule, but maybe he didn't realize the detail of the open hand that Collison was explaining. It's not like he's never heard of the hand check rule, but maybe he wasn't clear on the detailed differences.

I don't know... he just comes across as too bright to have completely missed an entire rule altogether.

@za
Seriously. Kind of weird that it took Nick Collison to inform him of that. Makes you feel great about the Byron Mullens Era, huh?

He had no idea about the hand-check rule??? Two summer leagues and a week of practice, and nobody has thought to tell him the rules?

I really like Brooks' definition of "raw" and I think he's telling the truth that Ibaka has more than athleticism. ATDHE.net is not covering the game either.

I think Ibaka is the kind of player who will grow more by playing against good competition than against D-League talent. He has the physical tools, and everyone from Collison to Grant Long has remarked upon his instincts and aggressiveness. Give him 10 minutes per game at first, and increase his minutes as he becomes acclimated to the speed and intensity of the NBA game.

@GAP
Yep. We'll be listening.

I saw on Newsok.com that the game is on radio at

Radio: WWLS 98.1-FM, 640-AM. at 7:00pm

The only way the Kings will surprise people is with their amazing level of suckiness.

@MartzMimic
Good stuff.

I'm actually starting to think the staff may have intentions to play Ibaka more than we think. I think he'll surely see time in Tulsa but from what I hear and see, he's more ready than originally thought.

I don't think that the Timberwolves or Kings have a chance to be mediocre.

My face fell into my hands when I heard that Mullens' quote. :(

I heard an interview with Grant Long this morning on WWLS, and one of the things he talked about was how much defensive intensity Durant has show in training camp. I realize Long is part of the hype machine, but I suppose we'll be able to tell soon enough how improved KD is on defense.

Long also had lots to say about Ibaka. He said he'd like to see Serge concentrate more on keeping his shots within the 10-14 foot range, but that he is very aggressive on both ends of the court. That's something this team really needs. Furthermore, he said he is deadly in the post, either scoring or drawing a foul. He went so far as to say he expects Serge to be among the league leaders in inside percentage (at least I think that's what I heard). He expects Ibaka to get good minutes.
