Smart Thoughts of the Week: Sept. 25 – Oct. 2

Throughout the week some of you drop some brilliant or at least somewhat thoughtful comments and so this is a try at highlighting some of them. Disclaimer: It’s not that I necessarily agree with all of them, but they were interesting and for the most part, well put. Consider everything [sic’d].

I’m so excited, I’m so excited… I’m so realistic. (Jax Raging Bile Duct): The unbridled optimism is rampant every year. I shake my head at the odd ball lineup Memphis will trot out next year, but you know the Memphis fans and the Memphis press who make money selling their opinions to Memphis fans are as optimistic as they can get. SMTOTW

NBA outsiders wouldn’t be surprised to see us win 40 to 50 games. Please. There’s just no way we win 50 games. I have tickets to 41 home games, own two jerseys and 100 thunder t-shirts, check this site daily and even watch u-stream reruns of thunder players reading chat messages in Hong Kong. I’m a huge fan. But I also know that if Lady Luck came down from Nirvana riding on Puff the Magic Dragon and sprinkled us with Tinkerbell dust, so that no one ever gets hurt and we win all our games decided by 3 points or less, we win 40 games. That’s the absolute tippy-top win total we could impossibly expect this season (thank you Lady Luck). But 50 games… 50 games is just silly.

It’s not Facebook’s 25 Things, but it’s something. (Crow): Ten things about Ryan Bowen, if you want to know: 1) Last season was his best shooting season, with surprisingly TS% above Durant and eFG% way above. 2)Early in his career he was usually a pretty strong offensive rebounder (compared to what you might expect) but not in 3 of the last 4 years. 3)His steal rate per 48 minutes is higher than Thabo. 4)He is generally low turnovers. 5) He is low usage and accepts that.

6) If you believe in Dean Oliver’s “Offensive Rating” he’d come in a close second to Nick Collison’s team leading overall offensive efficiency (not just shooting efficiency, everything). 7) Even with some of these other sneaky positives his main rep is probably as a good defender. “Defensive Rating” is mainly about team but he has been on some good and some bad teams and was usually from top quarter to neck and neck for team lead early in his career but more toward the middle in recent years but on good defensive teams. 8. He is from Iowa. Maybe Collison knows him abit, though Bowen is 5 years older. 9. He turns 34 in November. This might be the last dance. 10. For a candidate for a 15th man he might be a pretty good choice beneath the surface. In an Ollie and Thomas way. He also might be a good future assistant.

Is it also coincidence that I have a player named R. Young on my game? (Vega): Totally unrelated to training, but slightly interesting. I was looking through some screenshots of 2K10, and I came across a screenshot of the 66ers roster. Most of the guys were computer-generated fakes, but there was a power forward named D. Hardin on the roster. That is either a coincidence of massive proportions, or DeVon Hardin is in the game. I’m inclined to think that Hardin is actually in the game, which is kind of cool.

By steps and half-bounds. (Dylan): “My main concern is that the casual fan that has heard nothing all offseason except for the whole “can Durant top LeBron” thing buys into the hype and expects too much. I’d hate to be around .500 at the all-star break and have half the Ford Center be disappointed at the results. Somehow, someone needs to temper expectations. We’re taking steps, not leaps.

Free Uncle Jeff. (Ransom): I like what you’re thinking in terms of the rotations with one exception. Jeff Green deserves to be starting. No question of it. Ill concede that at the moment he may be more comfortable or slightly better at the 3. But, given his production last year, and every indication that he will improve his numbers, he needs to start. Last year he got about 17 and 7. slight improvements on that would give him equal numbers to some All-Star PFs. (David West chiefly). And, i think his quickness, passing and dribbling allow a very intersting miss-match potential at the 4 spot. Plus, when you really compare Green to some of the other PFs in the league, his size isnt that much of an issue. He has average height for an NBA PF and is a little on the light side, but far more athletic than the average 4. All this is just trying to say, his potential is a fringe All-star player at either the 3 or the 4, on a team like this (as opposed to the San Antonio of yesteryears) that makes him a starter.

Well I think Bowen is the missing piece of the puzzle ya'll.

Steve H. I am not going to do what you describe from here. I unfortunately went thru that already as I moved to quit, in a way that was drawn out too far. It wasn't right for anyone.

The way is going to be is that I am going to stop coming here as regularly. I'll read occasionally when I feel like it. I am not going to drop a dozen straight posts any more. If I want to make one or a few single posts at different times later this season or beyond, I was leaving myself that option because I have that right after following this team this far and I might have a little more to say.

Maybe I'll pass, but is my call not anybody else's.

Sorry it got this messy. But if folks had stuck to talking basketball (what I would have preferred) and ignoring style issues there would not be any drama.

I think this thread should spawn the new "Odd Thoughts of the Week". This thread has basketball info, gobs of praise for Roycie, drama and a stoner. Give all yourselves a pat on the back.

@Crow
Dude, you can be like the Phantom of the Opera. Always lurking about, never seen, until WHAM- time to string together a dozen or so consecutive posts to the annoyance of everybody else. Very dramatic of you. Nice call.

Ok Crow. Good luck with your life.

My style quirks annoy. I get that. It was not intentional and it is hard to break patterns.

Having them brought up constantly annoys me some too so I mentioned that back.

I know I have said it before but I will layoff for awhile and won't be a regular any more. I could say I'll be completely gone. But we'll let that happen when it does.

@Brew
One of us is stoned, and I'm pretty sure its you.

@Royce
Can we vote Crow off the island now?

Well I think Bowen is the missing piece of the puzzle ya'll.

Well I think Bowen is the missing piece of the mothahumping puzzle ya'll.

@Crow
You're pushing it. Just drop it.

No other smart post has really criticized or made fun of another poster (I checked) but it just happened to me twice last week and didn't mean anything. Got it.

I recommend you not do that to anybody else.

Ok, so "It’s not Facebook’s 25 Things, but it’s something." wasn't poking fun? My mistake, it was kinda vague and I wasn't totally sure. If it was considered a smart thought I'd have thought a somewhat different intro would have been in order than the one you gave it which I took as roughly "It is not totally quack, but it is... something" If you say it wasn't poking fun, ok.

But after your selection of last week's smart thoughts had 2 posts directly poking fun at or criticizing me perhaps it is understandable? Maybe I am a week late but I took that as personal.

But moving on.

@Crow
Crow, don't take everything so dang personally. It wasn't poking fun. It was in "SMART Thoughts of the Week." I thought it was a smart post. That's why I highlighted it.

Good grief.

Poke fun at 10 things about Ryan Bowen if you want (I assume you are given the Facebook 25 reference)but it could also be considered me poking fun at those that didn't know anything or didn't have anything to say about Ryan Bowen in the mainstream media or beyond. Easy enough with a little research. If you are interested in details of a long-shot add to team construction. Part of the reason I did it also was to fairly look at why Presti invited him, for clues of what he is looking for in general apart from Ryan Bowen. This time I came out understanding and agreeing more than other cases. That seemed worth doing at the time. Maybe not though, given the climate.

@Vega
I like Childress Vega. I think he's a nice complimentary piece. Unfortunately he does the same types of things that Thabo and Weaver do and would thus exacerbate the logjam at the wing.....

@Clark Matthews
Actually, Childress talked with Milwaukee in the offseason. The thought was that Atlanta would trade him to Milwaukee for Luke Ridnour and his expiring contract, but Childress decided to go back to Greece. Apparently, he and the Hawks have an agreement that if he decides to come back to the NBA, Atlanta will let him find another team, so I don't think that Atlanta matching our offer would be a problem. Really, the only factor that would determine whether or not we could get him is whether he would want to come back to the NBA.

One more note, I have the Thunder coming in with 39 wins, not quite there yet, but this is the last year before we should really be good

I live in Alaska, and since we don't have a team, I was always connected to the Sonics. Since they were from the Pacific Northwest, it made sense. However, I am now an avid Thunder fan. All of the people who are against the team because it moved from Seattle need to get over it and start cheering for a great young team. I read the Daily Thunder every day, and would like to thank you Royce for doing a great job

Royce
Continue to love your site; I'm on it most every day. I believe you are spot on with the number of wins; my over/under for the Thunder is 36.

Vega :I’ve mentioned this twice, but it got buried in the depths of old entries with lots of more interesting posts, so I will reiterate it here. Anyone here think that Josh Childress would be a good signing?

He's not available. If he were signed for anything reasonable, the Hawks would match it. What made Nenad available was that New Jersey was logjammed at the post position and close to the luxury tax.

Royce and community, I'm a long time reader that finally caved and signed up to talk some Thunder shop with all of you! Thanks all for making this hub a very awesome place!

I have been associated with a Saved By The Bell meme. One of my main objectives in life is now complete. I am very happy.

@Chas
Hand in there. Almost there.

@Vega
Not only did you discover DeVon Hardin in his pseudo virtual form, you got me all excited about buying 2K10 so I can obsess over the 66ers as well as the Thunder.

I really like the idea of Jeff Green leading the second group as a 6th man, but I think it would benefit us more if Green became that PF that could work better with Durant because we all know that they have a chemistry together. I don't know, the first 1/3 of the season will truly illuminate how we will need to use Green. He's definitely my favorite player(I love Durant and Westbrook, but I always cheer louder for the guy who doesn't get all the notoriety). Royce, you about done with the time traveling machine so that we don't have to endure this anticipation any longer?

I've finally made the Smart Thoughts. One of my main objectives in life is now complete. I am very happy.
