Report: Detroit Shock moving to Tulsa

Wow. I’m shocked (see what I did there?). Via an AP report:

A Detroit Shock official says the WNBA team is moving to Tulsa, Okla. The official spoke on the condition of anonymity to The Associated Press on Monday because he was not authorized to make the announcement.

Detroit made its debut in the league in 1998 and won titles in 2008, 2006 and 2003. The Shock lost last month to the Indiana Fever in the Eastern Conference finals after rallying to earn a playoff spot.

Good for Tulsa I guess. I have absolutely no interest in the WNBA and likely will soon forget there is even a team there, but that’s cool for them if they wanted it. So now we’ve pulled basketball teams from two different cities in two different leagues. Oklahoma: The Land of Relocation.

I wonder if all six Detroit Shock fans will make a documentary detailing the tragic loss of their beloved team.

A very similar joke came to mind when I saw the story too. Mine involved a little “Save Our Shock” flavor.

I wasn’t surprised that Tulsa would be getting a team, but I’m a little (forgive the pun) shocked that it’s the team from Detroit that will move there. I was expecting them to go hard after the Sacramento franchise since they have Courtney Paris, and the Shock have been so good, so I figured they were doing well in Detroit.

Now, should we expect Kevin Durant and Karl Malone’s daughter to participte in the “Hot Shot” competition at this year’s All Star Weekend? Who would be the retired star to join them? Robert Swift?

Same here. It’s all kind of strange. I wonder if there will be a big trial to break the lease. Where you at Brad Keller? (Okay, I’m done now.)

Do you think the NBA trade machine will work for other random basketball entities? For example, I think the state of Oklahoma trade the entire WNBA team for a 3-point shooter and a physical center to-be-named-later for the Thunder.

It speaks a lot to the success of your league when one of your best franchises is contracted, and the other is moved.

Good for Tulsa, but the WNBA is bar-none the most boring league in American sports. As Vega said, it’s pretty sad when one of your league’s best franchises relocates a year removed from a championship.

Having gone to college and now living in Michigan, I want to pretend that I’m sad to see the Shock leave (been here since their first championship), but let’s be honest: it’s the WNBA. I have nothing against equality in the workplace, but there is a vast difference between having a sport and it being entertaining. This isn’t Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh (greatest sports duo of all time), it’s bad basketball with an occasional championship to say, “Hey, that’s us!” once in a while.

I suppose if I was buying a sports team on the cheap, I’d probably pick up a WNBA team too. For one, I can probably afford one right now. For two, I could probably buy the best team in the league as easily as the worst.

Well detriot’s economy isn’t the best right now, and we are doing pretty well. This makes a lot of financial sense.

Seems like this would be the perfect time for Robert Swift to pull a Juwanna Mann and get back in the league.

Ya’ll got jokes. I’m actually glad to see such a high caliber women’s team join our state. The WNBA finals last year were very exciting. I hope Tulsa can compete on that level when their team arrives.
