Oklahoma City closes late to catch Miami, 96-91

BOX SCORE Heat Thunder Basketball

Not the most exciting game ever. At least for the first three quarters. Kevin Durant was in foul trouble and didn’t play a ton. The Tulsa crowd was a little sparse mainly because of the competing Boise St./Tulsa game (but the official attendance was over 10,000 which is pretty nice). Scott Brooks was tinkering with lineups and a lot of deep bench guys saw action. And it just felt like a preseason game. Lots of whistles, lot of turnovers and quite a bit of sloppy play.

But it picked up very nicely in the final 12. Durant had 18 of his 30 points in the fourth as the starters came in and played well leading Oklahoma City to make up a nine-point deficit to win 96-91. What was good about this game was that it was an ideal demo for closing a tight game. The Thunder needed stops, needed quality execution and needed to make smart plays down the stretch. Check, check and check. Both coaches saw the opportunity to get some serious work in, as the starters played almost all the key minutes. And the Thunder were the ones to finish it out.

The best part? The defense. The Thunder got close by Durant going off. Then hung tight moving between down one and down three for a few minutes. But what won the game was OKC got a few stops, capitalized on the stops and did what needed to be done to win. While just a preseason game, encouraging it is.

A couple quick thoughts:

  • Jeff Green was Oklahoma City’s main and really only offensive weapon early, going for 25 points on 9-16 shooting. He hit from outside, posted up a little and had the midrange jumper working. One thing I liked was how aggressive he was offensively when he saw he had a favorable matchup. One possession that comes to mind: Early in the first quarter, Green had Udonis Haslem on him near the baseline. The lane was clear and Green stutter-stepped and took Haslem to the hole with ease. He didn’t finish, but still, nice recognition of a mismatch. I have a feeling Green will have that advantage a lot this year against opposing fours.
  • Russell Westbrook put up another complete line (12 points, seven assists, six rebounds, three steals and four turns). Now I know, just 12 points on 3-12 shooting. I don’t know if this is the new Russell Westbrook or he’s just being very conscious on trying to set teammates up in the preseason, but I love the way he’s managing the game. The scoring will come, I have no doubt. So no need to fret. He showed off a nice little jumper tonight which was nice. Just one bonehead play: With 20 seconds left and the Thunder UP (see what I did there?) two, Westbrook got a steal and instead of pulling out the ball and waiting for a foul, he streaked for the bucket throwing up a wild shot. Luckily, Etan Thomas was there to bail him out or otherwise it could have been a very stupid play.
  • I may be wrong, but I think OKC had just one turnover in the fourth. If I’m right with that, that’s very good. That was a lot of the reason the Thunder outscored Miami 35-21 in the final frame.
  • Byron Mullens finally showed us something tonight. I thought he was solid on the glass, did well rotating on the defensive end and posed a nice threat offensively. His line won’t blow you away (four points, two rebounds) but he was a +14 in 16 minutes and was more active than I’ve seen him. He has potential. He’s just got to tap into it.
  • And after all the excitement, Serge Ibaka wasn’t much of a factor tonight. No worries obviously, but it was just a bit of a bummer. Granted, he only got 12 minutes, but but he was a -7, missed the only shot he took, grabbed two rebounds and turned it over once. Not that productive. Also, Michael Beasley kind of showed a few weaknesses in Serge’s defensive game most notably, below average footwork. I was kind of happy to see him coming off the bench so early though. Maybe that’s a sign. Possibly a stretch to think so, but maybe…
  • Thabo went 0-2 on the corner 3 and 0-3 overall from deep. I think we got excited too fast.
  • KD scored his 30 on 10-16 shooting for the second straight night. This time he just 1-5 from 3, but was 9-10 from the line.
  • This was not a well-officiated game. The refs were easily influenced by players, most notably on that play late with Westbrook losing the ball. Just a horrid call. For the most part, the Thunder got a TON of calls. But of course they didn’t take advantage as they shot horribly from the free throw line (30-42). Keep this mind, while OKC attempted 42 foul shots, Miami took just 18. That’s quite a difference right there kids.

Now the most important thing: Where was James Harden? I didn’t hear anything about him being hurt or anything about him sitting out before hand. Brian Davis didn’t really mention anything during the broadcast. Maybe the staff wanted Kyle Weaver to get some minutes and it was planned. That’s fine, but it would have been nice for Harden to get some of those key minutes late too. Did I miss something on Harden?

Anyway, very nice finish for a good win, albeit preseason. The Thunder gets the weekend off and takes on Houston on the road Monday night.

Royce :@thunder tim Great stuff. Thanks.
And I’d love to hear what our resident defensive specialist Kev has thought about Russ’s defense. It’s looked very good to me thus far.

I was at church and forgot to set the DVR - so I missed last night's game . . . I didnt chart Monday but maybe I will chart the next preseason game . . . the intensity level is so different that I am reluctant to chart until the season starts . . . we will see . . .

@thunder tim
Great stuff. Thanks.

And I'd love to hear what our resident defensive specialist Kev has thought about Russ's defense. It's looked very good to me thus far.

All I'm going to say is that I'm impressed with the core players... esp Westbrook. I hope that his improvement translates to the regular season because he is obviously a handful for oposing point guard...

I attended the game and was lucky enough to be on the 3rd row, behind the Thunder bench. (gotta love cheap(ish) seats for a preseason Tulsa game!) I've got to say, watching those monsters live, that close, it's like watching a completely different game. I get it now. Oh my goodness. Even a sloppy game like this was one of the most exciting sporting events I've ever been too. They're so big and so fast and just generally AMAZING athletes. My goodness. Too bad it costs a small fortune to sit that close for regular season games...

a few observations:
James was running "laps" in early warm-ups with an assistant coach (running back and forth the width of the court). It sounded like the coach was saying things like "quarter-speed" "half-speed" - so he must still be rehabing a bit.

Thabo was lights OUT from 3s during warm-ups, all over the arc. Just didn't translate to the game, but he definitely has the stroke working.

Iblocka has all the potential but, my goodness, his teammates need to just let him play a bit. During every timeout when he was playing, he had multiple players and coaches coming over to him, talking to him, pointing things out, encourating him, etc., etc. It seemed like he was in information over-load most of the time. I guess that's how you learn. My bet is that he starts in Tulsa so he can learn the game and let his talent develop, because he really is unsure of what he's doing.

Lord Byron definitely was more active - what a pleasant surprise. Maybe he's catching on. And as difficult as it is to admit it, he at least seemed like he knew what he was doing out there (cf, Chewblocka). If Mullens could just pissed off about something and play with an edge, he could be pretty darn good. He's just too passive right now. One example - the Heat put up a jumper and there were 4 Thunder under the rim. If he had made any sort of play for it (ie, jump or move forward), he would've secured the board high in the air. As it was, it bounced once and KD lazily picked it up. He needs an attitude that anything in the air is HIS BALL. Until he gets that, he's going to be lacking.

Wow, it was cool to see Etan play so well in his Tulsa homecoming. He started and scored the Thunder's first basket ****AND**** nailed two free-throws to put the game away. Doesn't get any better for him. I was sitting with some of the 100+ folks he bought tickets for and "we" were all very excited for him.

Ruffin, also a Tulsa guy, played well but he's not at Etan's level.

Also, my Tulsa crowd was saa-aaa-aad. Nobody wanted to stand up at any point during the game until the final 30 seconds or so. It was like we were watching a concert or something and everyone just wanted to sit and enjoy it. The girl in front of me actually told me my clapping was giving her a headache and asked if I could stop. Laddy...you're on the second row at an NBA game...whaddya expect?

Russ was GREAT down the stretch, being extremely patient, finding open guys for dunks, jumpers, etc. He really is becoming a solid point guard and "floor general" for our squad.

KD is amazing in the game, but you wouldn't guess it by how lazily he gets warmed up. Whatever works, I guess!

Overall, I LOVED this game and seeing it up close and am looking forward to an exciting (but up and down, I'm sure) season.

MartzMimic : but then I remember after last year’s preseason thinking that Green should earn his minutes behind Wilkins.

*sigh* This is exactly the reason I'm trying to keep myself from getting too excited. I mean, I'm totally excited, but I'm doing my best to temper that feeling and try and stay rational. It's hard.

From the Oklahoman: "DeVon Hardin, a second-round pick in 2008, attended the game Wednesday and will play for the 66ers this season."

Watched part of the second period and all of the second half. I think Westbrook is for real. He really dominated Carlos Arroyo. He controlled the field and is growing into his position.

The other thing is that in the fourth quarter it wasn't until the last two minutes or so that the Heat had a free throw attempt and OKC was like 7/7. The defense was great.

Also there was one official who was absolutely horrible. I think Brian Davis was calling him something like "He who should not be named"

My self, I am feeling primed about things. I think that Eton Thomas is another high-character guy who will do so much for the team. His leadership will go far.

T.

With all of the different lineups, rotations, whistles and such, it's hard to tell exactly what kind of team we have on our hands. I'm one of the first to say that the play of our traditional starters is encouraging, but then I remember after last year's preseason thinking that Green should earn his minutes behind Wilkins. Still, it's hard to argue with two 30-point games from Durant, nearly a 4-1 assist to turnover ratio for Russ and generally pretty solid play from Green.

"While just a preseason game, encouraging it is."

Jedi Master, you are. :)

With Harden out at least Weaver got a steal and an assist.

I still think Thomas could rebound better.

Wish I would have caught more of the game, finally tuned in late in the third and like want I saw.

From what I saw, Westbrook is clearly a major presence. Durant played fairly well on D and Green and Thomas were pretty solid.

Thanks for the post-game Royce.

Ibaka had to cover a smaller, faster player who I still think is a sf with pf abilities. No shame in getting beat by Beastly, he does it to alot of pf's. I thought we started slow but really got going in the 4th. I think if we played in Tulsa everynight, then Thomas would be our starting center from here on out. I thought he did very good, and was in the right place at the right time a few different times.

I heard a little bit of the game on the Animal driving home and I think that I missed a thriller of a 4th quarter!
