And. Here. We. Go. (waves hand)

Basketball! Basketball! Basketbawwwwwwl!!!! We’ve waited six months for this night. We feel good about our squad and there is a good chance to start out 1-0. A less than awesome Sacto Kings team comes to town and if this Thunder team is going to improve the way we think it is, a win should happen this evening.

Now, I don’t want to be this guy that’s placing too much importance on a season opener and calling it must-win or anything like that. Over-quantifying a single game is a sports pet peeve of mine. I’m not into that. If I was, I would become a baseball writer so that I could rule the Yankees out every May, especially after a loss to the Red Sox, just to watch them come back and win 97 games and the division. Then I’d act like I saw that happening all along and forget about my dumb bold statement.

But at the same time, a loss would be somewhat deflating. It was be against a team the Thunder SHOULD beat, at HOME, in a game everybody is stoked for. It would be more of a bummer than the egg this team layed opening night last year against the Bucks.

TWO KEY MATCHUPS
Tyreke Evans vs. Russell Westbrook
Holy hybrid super athletes Batman. I know it’s Kings/Thunder, two of the worst teams in the league last year, but this game should be on national television just for this matchup. Two guys possibly playing out of position with insane ability, playing AGAINST each other. I know where I’m looking all night. I give the edge to Westbrook though because he’s a quality defender and has had a year in the league. This is Evans first game of his pro career and he’s playing it on the road against a solid defender.

Desmond Mason vs. Kevin Durant
Nobody knows how to defend KD better than Dez. And nobody should know Durant’s defensive capabilities better than Dez either, considering he taught him basically everything he knew. Durant obviously wins this matchup because, well, he’s going to win most every matchup. But Dez is going to be his usual bulldog self for sure.

The slate is clean and an opportunity is there for the taking to get to 1-0. The Hornets kicked off season one in OKC against the Kings, blew them out, and flirted with the playoffs. So this could be a good sign, right? RIGHT? Well that is if the Thunder can win tonight. And so it begins gang. Thunder in the direction above you.

Tip at 7:00. Go season.

(Also, I’ll be taking part in the Daily Dime’s Live Chat tonight at the mothership. It’ll be a big group discussion and you’re welcome to pop by if you’d like.)

Thomas didnt look good at all. He and Collison just dont have the height or finesse to get shots off down low.

I was sad that Livingston didn't play because Ollie was pretty bland. He didn't create any open shots and he can't make any open shots. Other than that, he's great.

I found the lack of playing time for Ibaka, White, and Livingston a bit puzzling, but when you consider that the starters played most of the game, it is probably a simple case of Brooks wanting to get the starters back in to the flow of the regular season.

While I didn't watch very much of this game, Thomas seemed to be rather ineffective when I was watching, and his stat line seems to confirm it. 1-4 shooting, two points, and a mere one rebound? Ouch.

Oh.... and Green with the blocks...

Man the starting five really impressed

Sitting at the game I was really impressed with the starting five. I don't know if it was just a mismatch or what, but Green had a really nice offensive game in the post, mostly isolated on that Nocioni.

Westbrook was amazing... really had control (with a few minor exceptions) and managed to knock down some shots. Another thing I noticed is that he didn't cash the boards TOO much, meaning that he was able to maintain defensive position on Evans (who was wonderfully quiet tonight). He also did a nice job guarding Kevin Martin for a stretch when they were trying to find a way to stop him. And the Westbrook/Kirstic tandem was impressive (even if Kirstic had a little trouble getting hold of some of Westbrook's quicker passes).

Thabo did what Thabo does, and he even knocked down his spot up shots. He missed a few open shots that he "created" but that's okay.

Durant quietly got a double double 11 rebounds... and added 4 assists. He also did a nice job on D... even though he got worked by Martin a few times.

Collison was Okay. Thomas did well. Harden will be fine but has some work to do. Ollie was fine.

The thing that concerned me most was the fact that Livingston got zero minutes... reason for concern? No Ibaka either :(

Off topic, and mildly depressing, but here's Blair's 1st line:

Min FG FT RB A TO F +/- Pts
DeJuan Blair, F 23 7-10 0-1 11 3 2 4 +11 14

A rebound every 2 minutes ... with no ACLs ... wow

Good - Starters controlled the game. Westbrook is really becoming the floor leader that should strike fear into the hearts of opponents. KD can get it done even when the defense is keying in on him.

Bad - KD could still use some better shot selection. I know he can hit from everywhere, but that doesn't mean he should always shoot. Brooks needs to instill him with some PG traits of his own. The bench needs to step it up. They don't have to beat starters, but they have to hold their own for the minutes they are in. Our depth is going to be problematic when KD and Westbrook get tired as the season goes on. KD didn't need to play 42 minutes tonight.

Danny :@Casey

To be honest, I sort of like that commercial.
It’s at least made me slightly more accepting of the THUNDER UP! slogan.
They’re playing it too much however—It was basically a lead in and out for every single commercial. They need to use it less.

Yeah it's not a bad commercial, just playing it every 2 minutes has got to stop lol.

LOL wilkins shot hit the game winner for minnesota

Great game. Obvious MVP goes to Westbrook; Durant had a quiet but productive night; Green had great points in the paint. Great night defensively. The question is, was the Kings just that bad, or did we look that good? SIDE NOTE: Who else is already tired of the "Game time, let's thunder up" commercial?

Man..WESTBROOK!

I mean, yeah--this was the Kings. But the flash and control that Westbrook showed tonight has me really excited for more.

I do believe the Thunder now own their first winning record. Woo!

If he keeps this up, Westbrook for MIP?

New team plan: play the Kings every game.

Yep... I said 42 wins... and I'll start my own countdown... 41 to go! :)

Westbrook has gotten Nenad to the line a few times too.

westbrook to nenad(!) is working pretty well...

westbrook has total control of the game

Shot 64% in 1st half. Nice!

that dish to KD before the half was unbelievable

Wow Westbrook looks ridiculously good.

well we've already tied the best first quarter of last year...i am pleased

For those without stream sign up here http://www.nba.com/leaguepass/online.html

free preview till the 3rd of november. good stream quality.

damn stream won't work... working out of town really sucks sometimes.

Alexfromgermany :
not sure i can believe what i’m seeing here…westbrook is playing like CP3

I agree. Shocked how well he's playing

not sure i can believe what i'm seeing here...westbrook is playing like CP3

I cannot get the atdhe.net stream to work.

here we go, yay - found a trick to get into the free trial of american nba league pass and it's great! national anthem sucked though

Enjoy the game people! I will be "defensively scoring" the game so I will be using Tivo to stop and start. So I will finish "watching the game" prob 30 minutes to an hour after you guys . . .

Is the game going to be in full-screen HD, or in standard def on the HD channel like in the preseason? Their pre-game looks pretty rough on channel 715.

YEAH. Thabo!!! I have been unusually upset by that DOK article saying he wasn't signed to an extension all day!! Thunder Up!!! Somehow it seems less bad in print, not sure I am ready to chant it yet th

Welcome aboard the "longterm" ship Thabo. He is still young and just needs to keep improving with the rest of the guys.

I'm guessing 5 years/$20 million? Does that seem way off?

nice! Our defensive leader is here for awhile!!

@MartzMimic
Absolutely, I'm sure Sam wanted to lock Thabo down before the season and create some stability.

Let's hope he knocks down tons of corner 3s and earns his paycheck!

@KingGondo
That is great news!

Announced via the Twitter feed, less than one minute ago.

Congrats to Thabo!

This just in, Thabo has been signed to a multi-year extension.

Uh oh. I think our hopes of getting "Thunder Up" taken away are dwindling. KD just tweeted:

KevinDurant35 "Headed to the Ford Center for our first game!!! Thank u GOd for giving us the opprotunity to do sumthin we love doing everyday..thunder up"

Got a call from my ticket rep: Let me, let me upgrade, upgrade ya.

Opening Night - Floor Seats

My head is swimming. And my daughter's 16th birthday is Friday, so this'll be a nice little added present.

YEEEEEESSSS!!! LET'S GET A WIN TONIGHT, BROTHERS!!!
(I thought I could get away with caps today, yo!!)

Is Thunder Down an option? Get down, Thunder Down. Nah.

I do like Roll Thunder, Roll!!! Good suggestion.

Westbrook is gonna put on a clownsuit on Tyreke

How many times does KD get fouled tonight by Des by doing that patented move of Desmond's?

I do believe my thunder is up. Yup. It's up.
