As for Tank ‘N Draft — isn’t that the point, that we’re squandering a year’s worth of honestly competing? We could have gone after Millsap or Turkoglu or made a trade or two and put together a team that might win 45 games. And that would have been the ceiling. You give up an expected ~10 wins this year (and maybe even next) in order to put in place a foundation that can “honestly” compete for a title for 6 or 8 years. I thought that was the point of Presti’s maneuvers, and why most of us were relieved that this summer was so quiet.

The thing SLAM and others forget when they talk about a “tank and draft” philosophy is that there were no free agents truly available (Orlando was determined to match any offers for Gortat, and I think the same could be said for Milsap in Utah) that would make the Thunder appreciably better than the moves they’ve made. Long-term financial have to be taken into consideration, else you get Isaiah Thomas’ Knicks or the pre-Presti Sonics.
