Smart Thoughts of the Week: Aug. 7-14

Oh, so that’s why. (J.G.): Apparently Basketball Fiend didn’t see that expected plummet of the salary cap in 2010-11. The Thunder do have a payroll under $50 million right now, but they also have 5 draft picks, two expected to go in the top 14 (we’ll say that should amount to about $5 million + another $2.4 if they sign all of their draft picks, so $7.4 just to be safe).SMTOTW

Now add a $8 million onto that for David Lee (3 year, $24 million) and that will put the Thunder, before July 1st, 2010 at approximately $63.4 million dollars in salary (before those other contracts come off the books). Now guess where that $63.4 million dollar salary figure will put them at: OVER THE CAP. There’s a reason last month’s email from the NBA regarding the expected sharp drop in the salary cap for 2010-11 sent shockwaves throughout NBA front offices.

Appreciating James. (Jax Raging Bile Duct): It seems that no one outside of NBA purists appreciate what Harden brings to the table. Scouts, coaches, teammates, GM’s… they all love a guy who doesn’t hurt you in any area, and doesn’t have any weakness to his game. Maybe Harden isn’t flashy, or have athleticism oozing out of his ears, but he’s solid everywhere. Solid IQ. Solid shooter. Solid ball handler. Solid defender. Exceptional passer. Exceptional decision maker. He’s still a rookie with a lot to learn, but he’s the furthest thing from a project. Maybe he won’t round out ESPN’s top 10, or cameo in an EA cut-a-way video, but if that’s a weakness, it’s his only one.

But in the end, aren’t we all? (Vince): I think 30 games is on the low end, barring a major injury to one of the big three. Bear in mind that we played the last 50 games at a 31-win clip. I’m admittedly a homer but I’d put the over/under at 38 games. I also think the 8 seed is going to come down to us, Phoenix, Houston, and Golden State. If Phoenix and Houston regress as expected, I still say we can be talking up an outside shot at the 8 seed into March. But again, I’m a giant homer.

As Traber tends to do, he pissed me off. (King Gondo): As Traber tends to do, he turned it into a black/white, with us/against us story, with Collison as the “traitor.” I guess he’s only allowed to like OKC now, and shouldn’t bother tweeting when he’s in Seattle (unless it’s something negative).

You keep bringing the solid movie references and I’ll keep putting you in. (astrorob): I have high hopes for RW. He reminds me of the character off Mighty Ducks 2. The kid from Texas that was faster than anybody else on the ice and could score, he just couldn’t stop or slow down. Maybe if Brooks puts him through a pop can montage, we can beat those dirty Icelanders, I mean a good run in the playoffs. I agree that Nenad needs a shave. I think its those few stragglers on top that keep him at Swift speed running back to the hoop. Make him a little more aerodynamic and he may even beat Russ back.

Me too. Me. Too. (Steve H): I understand that Etan Thomas had an MCL tear last year, and heart surgery in 2007. I would be real interested in seeing what his stats were in seasons that he was actually healthy. Anybody know where to find something like that? It’s hard to reconcile his beastly description at HoopsHype and 7mill salary with the stat-line at NBA.com unless he put up some quality numbers at some point in his career, and I’m hoping his numbers have just been badly skewed by his recent injuries.

I’m sure it will be better than Transformers 2, right? (Joe): I doubt I’ll watch it. If I lived in Seattle I might feel differently, but I have turned the page and the Thunder are my team. It’s too bad that so many Sonic fans can’t do the same, but I completely understand why they feel hurt and betrayed and feel a sense of loss. I thought I would probably never say this, but if you can take all of emails and comments and half truths out of the equation before the team moved, and just judge him since the move, Clay Bennett has been a very good and committed owner. Light years better than cheapskate Howard Schultz.

I have nothing to add here because that’s darn well said. (Elegy444): I am very interested in the film. As a Thunder season ticket holder, I can say that I was ecstatic when the team came to town. Do I feel that it could have been handled better? Sure. Anytime a city like Seattle has enough emotion and ammunition to create an 80 minute documentary, there were definitely some problems there. I’m glad ‘sonicsgate’ came by to back up his film. The ‘city’ bashing just shows ignorance. Besides collegiate titles, the Thunder are the best thing that has happened sportswise to this area as long as I’ve lived here. Why wouldn’t we embrace the opportunity that is the NBA in OKC?

And we’ll end on this because, well, just because he’s right on. (MartzMimic): As for Traber, he’s a washed-up Kenny Powers wannabe. Some idiot called in saying KD and others would sign autographs and mingle with fans after the pregame shootaround, but Nick wouldn’t. I never saw any of the guys signing autographs before a game, but even if it’s true, I wanna hear Traber go off on pitchers who won’t talk to the media if it’s their day to pitch.

WWLS sucks in their role as the “voice of the Thunder.” Not only do they not have anyone who knows or even follows basketball, but not a single players show, weekly conversation with Scott Brooks – nothing. I guess ESPN 103.3 in Dallas ruined me. Before he became the Mav’s head coach, Avery Johnson had a weekly show, Don Nelson (and later, Avery), called in to talk for 15-20 minutes every Friday. Simple stuff. We’re a major-league city, with minor league sports radio.

@stk7
I calculated the payroll as of July 1, 2010, which is definitely inflated since I'm sure we can all agree that there's no way the Thunder keep everyone on there, but that is the day that Durant will be first eligible for his extension.

Now, I'm pretty certain that the front office could wait until those other contracts expire before they sign him to what should be a very lucrative deal, but since the initial conversation (sorry, don't have the link but it is in the archives somewhere) was centered around a writer's article that the Thunder have cap to burn before Durant's extension comes up (which is just not true since the cap will be significantly LOWER next year than last year and this upcoming year), that's why I focused on that day to show what the situation would be like if they went after another big contract before Durant's extension date.

I hope that makes sense, though I do think I just confused myself a little bit. :)

How has Trabor avoided landing his own show on FOX news? I'm seeing a 30 minute spot between O'reilly and Glen Beck where he could scream at guests and make s**t up like those guys, only with a few more sports references. Trabor's agent, if you are out there, make the call already.

This interview was classic. Traber making sh*t up, interupting Nick by talking louder, mentioning his pro career, and pretending that his opinions toward OK state aren't biased. OHH and throw in his lack of knowledge about anything basketball. I feel sorry for Nick having to explain himself to "that guy". In this case, the guy who doesnt know what he is talking about but still reaches a large enough audience that some people might actually listen to his garbage.

haHa! That took me back to 3rd grade.

@Jax Raging Bile Duct
Thanks Jax. You were always a fave of mine in Mortal Kombat 2 matches.

@DJ

Excellent DJ, thanks for the link, I finally got to hear the whole thing.

Nick was great, he handled all that mess really well. His stock just went up in my book, and it was already high.

Now I can go back to ignoring Traber like I'm used to doing.

@J.G.
Let me get this straight: you're calculating the payroll assuming we keep everyone we currently have, all of our draft picks, and figuring in KD's re-up. Tell me what I'm missing, because that equation is a bit inflated. So I can get on the same page, where is this initial conversation?

Just to be clear. The above "dj" is not me. TYIA.

Traber is a certified asshole. There are no two ways about it.

While it's true that sportcasters need to be entertaining and controversy is part of the entertainment, Traber is so far over the line he doesn't even know there is a line.

Nick Collison is a class act and the team is lucky to have him.

I did, in fact, send a tweet Nick's way, to the effect of "Nice takedown of that Traber jerk."

I know this won't end up on "smart thoughts of the week", but Traber is a .....

If we had known Nick was calling in, we could have taken bets on how long it would be before Traber mentioned that he had been a major league baseball player for three years.

That's what my friends and I used to do before OU football games. We would bet to see how long the broadcast would go before Merv Johnson started talking about running a naked bootleg, especially the year after Jason's second ACL when Nate was essentially the only healthy quarterback on the roster.

I want to get a twitter to tell Nick way to go. I would have been pissed at Trabor and told him to shut up then hung up. Showed some class dealing with this idiot.

Royce - Here is your Saturday bolt for Traber and Collison:

http://podcasting.fia.net/6779/3871196.mp3

Oh, and expect the Thunder to announce sometime before October 31st that they're going to exercise the team option for Durant's fourth year, which means that the oh so magic day of July 1, 2010 (the day I focused on in that post), will be the first day that Durant will become eligible for his first contract extension.

@stk7
The $63.4 million salary (as it said in the actual post), was calculated BEFORE the contracts came off the books. And also, Durant's extension can kick in NEXT YEAR, 2010, not 2011. Hence why being so far under the cap is important for next summer around the time all those contracts come off the books and all those draft picks need to be signed.

There was more in that initial thread about being at only $20 million in guaranteed contracts after next summer, but realistically expecting to be around $41 million when the players we all expect to be extended or their options exercised are extended or exercised.

But obviously Royce can't post the entire thread discussion again.

Trebor said that he would no longer imply that Nick hates OKC...but then went after him even more, telling him that he should appreciate his salary and act more like Durant and say things like "I could see myself playing here for my entire career.

Lame

He said that he likes OKC and that he can't understand why Trebor hates him so much. He also said that the Jenny Carlson article was just downright strange.

He told Trebor to stop putting words in his mouth about hating OKC...but he didn't back down about liking Seattle and about thinking that the team left is sad for the city

Nick called in randomly, said he received some tweets about Trebor wanting him out of town.....

I can't believe I missed it.

Could anyone give a detailed breakdown of it?

@Jax Raging Bile Duct
I wish I knew, I'm sure there will be a podcast available at some point. It would make a great bolt for tomorrow (hint Royce).

I started my drive home when I turned on the sports animal and heard Collision taking Trebor to task. Collison said that he could not understand why Trebor was so mad and why people are so sensitive about his comments about Seattle.

I have to say that watching this asinine story unfold reminds me of watching a relationship that is on the rocks. OKC/Trebor is the insecure, jealous one, and Nick is just can't understand where all the drama is coming from. The same paranoia is directed at Durant. If people don't stop being all sensitive, they will hate playing here and they will go away....lol

And even now that Collison is off the air, Trebor is still rippin on him....Trebor is a jerk.

@Bryan @Nix

Seriously? HOLY CRAP! Anyone know if it will be rebroadcast? I'll break my streak of ignoring Traber to hear that.

@Steve H

I like how you put my name in quotes. It makes me feel as though I haven't been keeping up my persona of angst, ire and spite.

AH...I freaking hate Traber...idiot

Nick Collison destroyed Jim...

Freaking idiot

Nick Collison is on Trebor's show right now!!!! effen hillarious

@DSMok1
Jax "Raging Bile Duct" already pointed that out to me- GREAT site. And the answer, which was further confirmed by an observation by Joe, was that a healthy Etan should be a fine shot-blocking, board grabbing addition to our line-up.

Me too. Me.

That's easy--haven't you all heard of Basketball Reference? Etan Thomas: http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/t/thom... .

RE: Oh So that's why- I agree that we should stay away from Lee and other high dollar players, but we aren't looking at near $63.4 million you project. Remember we are losing the contracts for Watson and Thomas (currently our two highest obligations) and Ollie. Also we will not be able to retain all of our current players or those draft picks, simply because of the maximum roster allowance.
What does this mean? Assuming we hang on to all of our current players come next summer we will be sitting at around $40 million going into 2010-'11.
Essentially we do have options to pick up a lucrative player (a center IMO), and could even front-load his contract so it won't affect us in '11 when we'll have to dish out around $15 million to keep Durant (even though we have an incredible amount of options that offseason to pay Durant whatever he wants).
