Russell Westbrook is one of 12 NBA players that have filed a lawsuit against Topps. thunderbolt2

A great story from the NYT about Tim James, a former NBA player serving in Iraq: “Tim James apologized for being late. A rough day at work, said the Miami Heat’s 1999 first-round draft pick. Vehicles broke down, problems flared up, and he simply fell behind. ”It happens,” James said. ”Even here.” Even on the front line of the Iraq war. A former NBA player who often wondered about his true calling, Tim James is now a U.S. Army soldier, a transformation that even many of the people closest to him never saw coming.

Kevin Durant will return to the Goodman a third time this Friday. Is he playing too much?: “Kevin Durant has taken the “for the love of the game” clause to new levels this summer, with two spectacular showings recently in The Goodman League at Barry Farms, in which he scored 62 and 55 points, respectively. He also dropped 40 points in a charity game last weekend at Georgetown (before which, by the way, he said he never heard anything about a rumored showdown game against Gilbert Arenas, who made one appearance there two weeks ago). But with yet another expected appearance Friday night, is the third-year Oklahoma City Thunder superstar taking his offseason showcase too far? As one member of the Washington Wizards’ staff reminded The Examiner this week, there are some players at Barry Farms who “have nothing to lose.”

Tony Mejia put his lists of 20 in order and ranks his top 100 players. Kevin Durant checked in at No. 12.

The father of Nate Fleming, one of the Oklahoma State players that tragically died in a plane crash in 2001, will receive an award this week in Edmond. The featured speaker is Desmond Mason. There’s a pretty perfect example of how much Mason meant to this community and how he’s just kind of linked to it. nba_g_livingston11_600

Dime looks at 10 players that need to break out next year: “After his injury, a lot of people just wanted to give up on Shaun Livingston. But if he can comeback this year and actually play for an exciting, young Thunder squad like he did last April, people will start to remember why the Clippers were ready to get rid of Sam Cassell and pass the reins to the young Magic.”

Kevin Durant got one vote in ESPN’s offseason MVP voting. Who could it have been? J.A. Adande? Scoop Jackson? Eric Karabell?

It’s been four years since Hurricane Katrina: “The storm actually lent an assist to Oklahoma City’s future financial well-being. The city opened its doors and arena for the New Orleans Hornets for the next two basketball seasons. That was a big part of showing the city and state could handle an NBA team and since a local group purchased and brought in the Oklahoma City Thunder, which begins its second season on the court in October.”

So it’s a couple weeks late, but Sports By Brooks gives a little insight on the Collison/Traber thing: “Yes, it’s like 15 minutes of Traber putting words in Collison’s mouth and protecting Thunder fans from imaginary slights. It’s pure agony. There are two things at work here: one, that a radio station has given a show to somebody utterly incapable of rational thought and the ability to recognize when he is no longer making sense. He does a good job of cloaking it in populist rhetoric – he’s just doing it for Thunder fans, you see, and how dare you oppose him and the Thunder by proxy – but he’s so full of garbage that it’s impossible to take a word of it seriously.”

Kelly Dwyer counts down the top 10 NBA uniforms in the last 10 years. The Celtics come in No. 1 and the Spurs are in the top six. Among a few things that Dwyer liked (not picking on him here) was the simpleness of those uniforms, along with the Clippers and Lakers. But isn’t that what so many people ripped OKC’s unis for? That they were too bland and boring? Oh well, as Paul Lukas said, I think the home whites will be a favorite the next 10 years.

Scott Brooks talked about a couple players’ development: “Jeff is one of our most consistent players, and I see the improvement he has made every year. And that’s the sign of a great pro. I expect nothing different this year. He’s worked on his body. He has a great body already, but he’s gotten stronger, he’s getting quicker, his ball-handling has gotten better and his shooting is going to continue to get better.”

Of course.... the Cavs choose their jerseys based on which shoes LeBron is wearing that night, so maybe that's what Durant should do.

(And I'm not making up that shoe thing. I remember LeBron made the Cavs switch to the alternate dark blues for their Christmas home game. Now I ask.... what other athlete is given that kind of control?)

As far as jerseys are concerned, the Thunder should just do what the Cavs do.... wear about 35 different kinds.

By my count, the Cavs wore 6 different jerseys last season:

Home white
Road maroon
Alternate dark blue
Alternate wine/gold (those bright yellow ones with red cursive writing)
Alternate gold/wine
Alternate blue/gold

They've also worn two to three different throwbacks over the last three years.

So, to answer your question, the Thunder should just design about 50 jerseys, wear them randomly throughout the next 3-4 years, and just see what sticks haha.
Alternate gold/blue

@Royce

That's ironic considering how much he publicized his one-way "feud" with Simmons, trying to soak up some attention out of his stature.

It has been confirmed: Traber 100 percent avoided my phone calls. To quote someone that knows: "I didn't want to publicize that punk's website." That's okay Jim, ESPN does it for me.

@Royce

I've got this great image in my head of how to make a yellow/dark blue alternate, but I'm at work without an editing program to mess around in.

@Dylan

If we do the bison, with yellow, then I'm going to have flashbacks of my local alma mater.

@Dylan
Absolutely good thoughts. That's the problem with having 45 secondary colors. Which one is your actual secondary color?

I think yellow would be cool, but would it be too Sonic? Maybe that would be a way to pay subtle homage. The orange is supposed to be red/orange so if they could get it to where it didn't look straight orange, I'd be ok with that. You definitely don't want it to look like OSU because you want to avoid alienating fans at all costs. This is the one thing that unites this state so we don't want anything that could divide it.

So I like the gray idea if it could be pulled off. Dark blue is the best choice but that would look exactly like the Knicks.

All in all, I really have no idea. I think yellow with blue letter could be cool. Or the red/orange if it's done right. They need something. Or what if they went the Celtics/Bulls route and just went with a black alernate with yellow, blue and orange/red?

@Royce

Now the question becomes, is the alternate colored yellow (too Lakers), dark blue (too Knicks), or orange (too OSU)?

I doubt they go orange, as it's a color despised by 75% of the state's sports fans and I doubt they go dark blue, since it's too similar to our current roads.

I think a yellow alternate with some super retro looking front (the bison is a great idea) would work pretty well.

And I am definitely in favor of splitting Oklahoma and City up on the road jersey. As it is, it's too top heavy.

Another thing I wish they'd so on our unis, and it's something I'm surprised they didn't, was to put our logo on that triangle on the jersey neck. I like that, for instance, on the home jersey the triangle adds a flash of color to the top of the uni. It paints a nice eye path from the neck down to the team name, and down to the number. I just think a small logo, like what some NFL teams do, would have been a nice touch.

I really like the home unis. I think they are extremely crisp and clean but also give a bit of a retro look.

I'm okay with the road blues, but I think they are just a little bit boring. I like the idea of them and I'd rather have Oklahoma City on the main road unis than OKC, but I think it would be better to do an over/under approach with it.

I look forward to an alternate road uni. That should be good. I think that's where they implement the OKC.

@Lefty
Grey would be cool, but I think we all know, deep-down, that orange makes for the most beautiful uniforms. ;)

I've always thought some kind of dark grey uni would look really cool.

@Dylan
Re: The jerseys, I talked to a guy in the Thunder Shop downtown, and he said that the NBA requires teams to keep the same uniforms for a certain period of time (i.e., not to expect a uni re-design anytime soon). They do this to encourage fan loyalty and brand identification with the teams, which kind of sucks since our unis were designed so quickly after the move to OKC was approved.

I agree with your road uni suggestions (although the blue color is nice and has grown on me quite a bit).

One possibility is that the team will implement an alternate road jersey while they're waiting to update the current look. Something with a bison implemented into the design would be very cool, in my opinion.

Derrick Rose recieved 1 vote for MVP also, and yet Chris Paul received none. Not to downplay KD's name being there, but I don't think any of the names after Lebron/Kobe/Wade mattered.

I really enjoyed the top 100 ranking, though there are always thing to nitpick there. My most notable was Chris Bosh and Carmelo Anthony. I would have flipped their positions. Bosh is a little overrated as and elite big man, while Melo can often be underrated due to the negative view of Denver's system.

when did we get Gilbert Areans was I asleep

The unis are simple, but they don't quite work.

The "THUNDER" on the front of the homes looks bad because the double outline is present nowhere on the road uniforms.

The roadies could easily be improved by putting "CITY" under the numbers. It would be a traditional look, but unique to the NBA. When the Hornets put Oklahoma City on their jersey, that's how they did it.

@Dylan the logos on the shorts are too small. Right on.

That jersey article was right up my alley. Does anyone else read uniwatchblog? Great stuff there.

One of my current favorites is the Mavericks blue and green alternate. In my opinion it perfectly marries Old School and New School together. Plus, didn't P-Diddy design it? Dope.

As far as the Thunder jerseys go, I love our homes. Love them. So much so that I broke my rule and actually purchased one that I wear to games/watch parties/sometimes alone during my special time. The roads? Not so much. A different font would go a LONG way toward improvement. The problem is that "Oklahoma City" is too many letters, which is why I was in favor of having just "OKC" on the roads.

Where change can be made on both unis is the shorts. I don't like jerseys with too much flash to them, because they usually end up looking ridiculous (for instance, the last two Rockets versions. Awful). But with shorts, you can get flashy without looking too crazy. The old Raptors shorts were a good example of this. While I wasn't a huge fan of their jerseys, the shorts were great... a logo on one side, the players' number on the other.

I'd like to do something like that. I know we have our logo on both sides of our shorts, but it's too small. I'd like to have a larger logo on one side, each players' number on the other and to get away from the straight stripe down the side. Mix it up a bit, have the stripe reach about 75% of the way down the side, and then tail off down the bottom rail of the short. I think that looks classy.

Oh, and a memo to everyone... STOP WITH THE PINSTRIPES. That's for baseball, only. Thanks.

(I bet that was more than you ever wanted to hear about uniforms, but I assure you, I can go on and on.)
