Listen here: Kevin Durant isn’t going anywhere

I’ve been planning on writing something over the past few months making a case as to why Kevin Durant won’t be leaving Oklahoma City as some people are trying to make you believe.

There’s lots of reasons why. First, he’s said it multiple times. I know, I know. You can’t take what athletes say to heart. It’s just regurgitated fluff that is said only to please fans. But I don’t know man… he’s been pretty adamant about it. Second, financially he’s going to be fine in OKC. It’s not like he won’t get paid. Third, the “spotlight” and draw of a major market is overrated. In this age of media everywhere, if you’re good, you’re going to get the endorsement and you’re going to get seen.

So yeah, I was going to write all of that out in an overly wordy column, but Clark at The Lost Ogle took care of it today and said it much better than I possibly could. Read the whole excellent thing, but here’s a great excerpt:

Of course, the D.C. rumors are expecting Durant to be even harder core.  They say he will refuse to sign any contract (including an offer during his restricted free agency in 2011 that Oklahoma City could match) and risk more than $80MM that could be wiped away by an injury or car accident during the 2011/2012 season.  And why?  Assuming the Washington Wizards, the team closest to the town he grew up in, will have max money to offer him in the summer of ‘12.

Let’s assume the Wizards manage to avoid the awful contracts they love to offer over the next two years and keep only Gilbert Arenas and whoever they draft so they can afford Durant:  Why would anyone think Durant wants to go home so badly?  He was an unrestricted free agent coming out of high school and could have attended any college he wanted.  If he loved his hometown so much, why wasn’t he playing for Georgetown?  Or Maryland?

Also, here is the other thing.  If Durant is lying and really wants out of this small market so badly that he would be willing to give up a guaranteed $20MM, he will lose out on more than money.  As LeBron is learning as he gears up for his free agent extravaganza, the only teams who can even remotely compete with his current team when it comes to dollars are only able to do so because they have entirely stripped themselves of talent.  When the Knicks come knocking on his door next Summer, they will have only Eddy Curry, Jared Jeffries, Wilson Chandler, and Danilo Gallinari under contract.  Then, should they sign King James, they will only have enough salary cap space leftover to surround him with minimum salaried players.

Durant, on the other hand, is the member of a young corp destined for greatness while working for the “it” general manager in a city that adores him.  Yeah, I can see why he’d want out.

I'm putting the chances of the Wizards getting Durant at much higher than 50-50. The hype will be too tempting to turn down. The Wizards will most likely be the Bullets again in 2011. New uniform, new name, new colors, John Wall... Durant will be welcomed back to DC with open arms. Arenas will probably not be a Wizard next week either. If the Knicks don't get Lebron there's the possibility they take the risk on Arenas to dump Curry. The Wiz might have to ship off other players (Blatch? McGee?) to get rid of Arenas but in the long run it's worth it. Arenas would be a great fit for the uptempo NY game too. The fans there would be happy again. So next year the Wizards suck, get another nice draft pick in 2011 and claim Durant. After that it's all about retaining solid players like Mike Miller and signing a few veteran free agents to surround Wall and Durant with. Leonsis did it with the Caps and he'll do with the Wizards. I put this scenario at more like 65% probable.

The Wizards will have Gilbert Arenas and Andray Blatche under contract, and LOTS of salary cap space. Say what you want about Gilbert, but he is a legit All Star player. Blatche is a rising talented big man. Throw in Javale McGee, another talented big man who will still be on his very cheap rookie contract, and the Wizards have some serious complementary pieces to fit around Durant. Oh yeah, and they have a lottery pick this year, so another cheap contract which may hopefully bring about some more complementary talent.

The Wizards are in a very good position to go after Durant and can offer him a complementary talent (including big men to protect him), a max contract, a great city to live in, a market where he can maximize his endorsement opportunities, and his hometown. I put the chances at about 50-50, maybe even higher.

Actually he didnt go local for college because his parents didnt want him to.
Alot of people around here have heard from his parents that he wants to come back. And no its not just some team that is closest to his hometown. It is his hometowns team. PG county is a DC suburb.
Most athletes, especially african americans would rather live in DC than Oklahoma, especially when its his hometown.
I think u guys are naive to think he doesnt want to play for the wizards. and after the salary cap we have cleared recently i dont see why he wont be in DC.

I feel like it would be tough to support a guy I loved if he was so vocal about making a decision about changing teams next year.

We also have "The Ultimate" factor to consider as well!

there isn’t a team out there that can offer the max like Cleveland can, AND compete in the next 2-3yrs. Just my opinion.

Watch out for the Clippers. If they can shed a contract, they might be a pretty attractive suitor for LBJ. That's a big if, though.

GMs like to win championships too. I don't think that if they resigned LBJ that they would just sit on their hands. A guy like that could cause a lot of problems if he wasn't happy. It's bad for the fan base and it's bad for the players around him that want to feel a sense of unity. I don't mind not resigning really, but being so coy about the prospect of leaving hurts the whole organization.

Royce :@ColinIt has been really strange just how non-committal LeBron has been. I feel like it would be tough to support a guy I loved if he was so vocal about making a decision about changing teams next year.

One thing you guys have to remember. LeBron wants a championship. Cleveland wants one too, and LeBron is their best chance right now. So, with the prospect of losing him right now they are doing everything possibly to make the team better around him. If LeBron had signed the extention this summer or stated that he would sign next year, what happens to all the leverage that he holds to force the team to make itself better. If he signed, the front office could take it as a sign that "Hey, we got LBJ, we're good." Instead, they're going "Crap, LBJ could leave, let's do something to make him stay!"

I honestly don't think LeBron would leave even if they don't win the title this year, because there isn't a team out there that can offer the max like Cleveland can, AND compete in the next 2-3yrs. Just my opinion.

I would disagree that King James is an "attention whore". (Not that I know the guy personally or anything) But it seems to me that the pinnacle of success in their (LBJ, KD and the rest)career is a NBA Championship--maybe secondarily an Olympic Gold Medal. After a certain level the zeros on the contract don't really matter that much. And NOBODY is immune to having agents and hangers-on talkin smack in your ear about, "They just don't respect you enough.....you could do so much better in______(insert big city of choice here)"

So do I think James would abandon his hometown after a heartbreakingly disappointing playoff season or two? HELL YES! Truth is, I think Durant would too, but it will not be in 2011 or 2012 or anytime soon. Cleveland had their chance last season, but they were outmanned, and if they can't bring a few more key pieces in around Bron (Shaq?!? are you freakin kidding me!!!!) I predict he WILL be gone.

I trust that Presti, Bennett and the rest of the Thunder organization want EXACTLY what Durant wants. To build a team that is a legitimate playoff contender. Period. As long as it seems to be going in the right direction, and the $$$$ keeps coming, Durant will be here. But don't think for a second that if the $$$ runs out, or Bennett is suddenly possessed by the spirit of George Shinn and starts prostituting our core off to the highest bidder, that Durant won't leave. (Blue skies and cheap real estate notwithstanding)

Steve H :Realize this doesn’t fit the discussion thread, or even this site, but I just read a Sports Illustrated article musing about whether Tebow is the greatest college football player ever. Is the media’s obsession with this guy starting to trigger anyone else’s gag-reflex, or is it just me?

I think it's fitting. In three years of college football, the kid has won two mythical national championships and a Heisman (in the one year he wasn't in the Mythical National Championship game). He definitely has to be in the discussion.

LBJ is an attention whore, that's why he's leaving for brighter spotlight.
Durant is a totally different person from my observation.

@Danny
Well, at the time I had a nice, big interview all set up and ready to go. But it appears that it may have fallen through. Which sucks butt, but that's the way it goes.

Good stuff; a solid write-up from Clark (and TLO).

By the way, Royce: I just noticed this tweet you made: "I have something pretty big coming soon. I imagine Mr. Traber will enjoy it. Mwahaha."

What's coming and when can we expect it? I'm excited for whatever it is, but it's been 3 solid days! What's the hold up??

@Derrick
Tebow turned on me after I saw some Sunday Conversation with him and Urban Meyer. They were asked about the "speech" Tebow gave during halftime of the National Title game and Tebow recited it like he was so proud of it. No hesitation, just boom, here's what I said. He came off arrogant and almost proud. As if he's so absorbed in "Tim Tebow, Great Leader" that he was giving himself credit for the way Florida played in the second half. Sure the team played better, but it was probably because of his motivation at halftime.

And then the GQ cover was just too much. We're over-saturated with him and that's not his fault, but I think he's caught up in the hype and love too.

I blame the media for my dislike of Tim Tebow. Before the championship game every story was about how great of a person Tebow was, doing volunteer work, missionary work and all. Which it is awesome he does that stuff, but to talk about it every time you mention his name was making me sick.

OOps. didn't mean to post as anonymous.

@Chris

@Bryan

You guys sound like Cavs fans right now..... haha. But seriously, I hope Durant stays. It's good for the league to have players spend most of their career with their original team.... now if someone would just tell LeBron that.

@Steve H

Don't get me started on Tebow. there are so many things about that guy that rub me the wrong way.

A couple other things that make me confident KD will stay:

The fact that he is genuinely really close friends with so many young guys on the team.

The way he gushes about Presti, calling him a "father figure" if I recall correctly.

In other words, this team feels like a family. Throw in the fact that it is full of talent and potential and extremely well run and no way is KD leaving. Some people just don't want to accept how good his current situation is.

@Steve H
just the name Tebow triggers my gag refelx...his whole persona makes me ill...

And back on the subject, no way is KD skipping town. He has a chance to be a legit star on a team that will be purely his built from scratch in a new city.

@Jax Raging Bile Duct

Especially if that team was a title contender. And I really don't think people are taking it well. In the Cleveland paper's website, the comments posted about the interview were very negative. People seem to be turning on the guy already.

@Steve H

I think the Tebow backlash is starting to wear off. I know I got sick of seeing the guy last season. It will probably start up again during the college football season. However, once he gets in to the pros, he will go the way of Tyler Hansbrough.... which is good for everyone.

Realize this doesn't fit the discussion thread, or even this site, but I just read a Sports Illustrated article musing about whether Tebow is the greatest college football player ever. Is the media's obsession with this guy starting to trigger anyone else's gag-reflex, or is it just me? Please, oh pretty please, I do so want to see McCoy get another shot at knocking this guys helmet off with his head still in it.

@Colin

If we won the lottery, and landed Blake Griffin, and when his contract was up and he wouldn't commit to the city, team and organization, I'd be so overwhelmingly disappointed. I'd be tempted to skip out on basketball for a long while.

I realize guys need to move on for the betterment of their careers or their family situation, but for a guy born-and-raised to be so nonchalant about his hometown, that's hurtful to the locals. I wouldn't take it well at all.

@Royce

Tell me about it. In fact, I had been adamant that he was staying.... until his most recent Sunday Conversation. Now I'm convinced he's leaving. And, at this point, I really don't care if he leaves anymore. If he doesn't want to be in Cleveland, the Cavs will just have to find someone who does.

@Colin
It has been really strange just how non-committal LeBron has been. I feel like it would be tough to support a guy I loved if he was so vocal about making a decision about changing teams next year.

Just wait, once LeBron signs with someone in 2010, the next event will be the "Kevin Durant watch." The only difference is, at least Durant seems like a genuinely humble guy... unlike LeBron, who has done just about everything to make Cavs fans want to get rid of him (and I'm a Cavs fan).

@J.G.
I agree! nice stuff...

Question: Is that supposed to be KD in the Hyperize commercial doing the flip into the pool and throwing the ball? It's obviously not him but the guys wearing the same clothes. Is that just part of the corniness?

Plus, a pretty good argument could be made that he'll be making even more money here, as it spends much slower in OKC than it would in New York/DC/Chicago/LA or wherever.

Bravo, Clark.

You can't break it down much better than that.
