Thursday Bolts – Not really Bolts Edition

Good morning my friendly Thunder fans. I am out of town today so there’s not going to be any bolts for you to soak in. I know, it sucks. This is like the first weekday that’s missing these bad boys since… well a long time. So as an early morning replacement in an effort to not throw off your morning routine (because I know so many of you go to bed looking forward to these), I’m tossing up an old column from earlier in the year. Enjoy and I’ll see you Friday.

Let me tell you up front, this is the toughest post game recap I’ve had to write.

I wanted this game. I mean, I wanted it.

I know it’s some meaningless mid-season game for a 13-40 team. I know by all appearances, this game is just another in a long season. But it was more than that.

Everybody could feel it today. The Thunder were the talk of the town today with the big Tyson Chandler deal. Everybody was buzzing about the Hornets in town with a new mascot to be unveiled. The Thunder had everyone’s attention in this state. The phone lines on the Sports Animal were full all day. But not to talk about Blake Griffin or OU football. Nope. People wanted to talk about Kevin Durant and Sam Presti.

And tonight, with our first love in town, I saw this as the night we turned the page. We could close the book on the Hometown Hornets and completely open up a new one for the Thunder. I envisioned a back-and-forth game with the Thunder pulling out a tight one in front of a ballistic crowd with our new hero, Kevin Durant leading the charge. It all set up to be the story-book way to officially make this team our own.

And everything was going to plan. The Hornets dominated the first quarter and the Thunder couldn’t throw a ball into the ocean. Everyone was groaning and having flashbacks to opening night where OKC got rolled as a crowd that was ready to explode had to sit on its hands.

But then things started to turn. Nenad Krstic played his best game of the season giving awesome energy on the glass and playing great defense on the interior. Kevin Durant shucked the jumper that wasn’t falling and went in the paint and stuffed it in NOLA’s face. Jeff Green got tough and pushed back against David West. Kyle Weaver was playing hard-nosed defense and containing Chris Paul. Earl Watson was making me want to run out into the middle of I-40 with a black jump suit on. So maybe that’s not a good thing. But with everyone thinking about halftime and the new mascot, OKC went on an electrifying 9-0 run to close to within 53-47. Game on.

Then Rumble the Bison came lowering from the rafters pounding away at a drum set. And while something just looked slightly off with him (too much hair? Head too big? What is it?), everything was complete. There was nothing left to wait on. Everything was unveiled, announced and completed. This was our franchise.

The two teams went back-and-forth and our new star took the game over. It was the game we wanted. KD had a ridiculous night scoring a career-high 47 points and hitting an impossible fadeaway three to knot the game at 98-98. The crowd was as loud as it’s ever been. Nobody cared about Chris Paul or David West. They were the enemy now. We wanted blood and it didn’t matter that we were going to take it from our first love.

But then CP3 did what CP3 does, hitting a shot with a second left and crushing our hearts and souls as the Hornets won 100-98. It was over. The night the Thunder became our own and the Hornets were put to rest ended in disappointment. OKC lost and the dream night didn’t happen.

But honestly, as I sit here writing this, I realize it actually has happened. I feel a pit in my stomach and I’m genuinely pissed about losing. I don’t feel any “Oh, well at least it was to the Hornets!” consolation at all. It sucks more that it was to the Hornets. Those jerks. There were moments in the game where Paul would flop and whine and I would think, “Oh come on. Grow a pair you wiener.” I thought that. About Chris Paul!

As if I didn’t already feel the connection with this team, I’m really feeling it now. I watched Kevin Durant put it all on the line, playing with everything he had. I watched Jeff Green make play after play, taking it to the hole and finishing. I watched Nick Collison and Nenad Krstic battle for every rebound and scrape, scratch and claw. I watched Kyle Weaver grind out defensive possessions and Russell Westbrook dive for loose balls. I watched an entire team give everything they had – even though they were 13-40 and this game wasn’t supposed to matter.

I envisioned OKC beating the Hornets and this being the night to remember – the night the Thunder became our team. And ironically with a loss, maybe it was hammered home even more.

I could not agree more and have wanted to slam my head into my steering wheel everytime the argument comes up on a certain radio station that Sefolosha and Harden can’t be on the floor at the same time. Why? Because everyone on that station doesn’t do enough research to know the actual measurements and playing styles of the players in question. They all seems to think that Sefolosha is 6′5 with limited length (actually heard it on the air, verbatim), instead of 6′7 with ridiculous wingspan, who can not only guard 2’s and 3’s, but even some 4’s in the league.
That is also why I’m afraid Desmond may simply not be asked back. Weaver and Sefolosha are pretty much the same types of players as Dez with better jumpshots and youth on their side. I hate to lose such a great teammate and veteran presence, but I just don’t know why they’d keep him with roster spots being so valuable and with Sefolosha and Weaver being able to play either wing spot.

He also did a very good job on a certain PG in the clutch defending Tony Parker on his final drives in TWO of the Thunder's 23 wins.

I totally agree with Bryan and JG about Desmond, and from a personal perspective nothing makes me sadder! :( Desmond is the Thunder player I would most like to invite over to the house for dinner, he is my kids favorite, and such a wonderful, wonderful asset to the organization. BUT, his on-the-court worth has undeniably slipped a bit, and coming off an injury with a big contract to renew, AND with younger, faster, CHEAPER Thabo/Weaver/Harden in the wings, I am afraid it is bye-bye Desmond. (sighs)

Great Ep. #21 & #24 out trying to recruit more henchman and find weapons for the monarch. So many great movie & pop culture references in it. A classic.

We are so going to get our asses kicked. We didn’t have breakfast!

Oh, and the lebron/Crawford thing gets my vote for "Lamest Scandal of the Year."

The thing that really cracked me up is that the play before, Lebron was defending the ball when his man put up a weak fade away. Lebron never even put his hands up - kinda like a coach just acting as a body on defense. He clearly could have cared less about playing great D. It's not like he's going to slide over and take a charge from some punk college kid who already has position on him - in a pickup game.

Lamest cover up ever....

@J.G.

Agreed...I really like Mason and he clearly has some basketball years ahead of him, but with Weaver and Sefolosha already fighting for the D specialist job, and with the roster being so full, I just don't see how you keep the guy around after such a serious injury.

The best part about all the changes to me is that he Thunder now have REAL depth now at the 2 and 3 spots. You could even argue that they have depth at the 1 and that they have taken some steps at the 4.

But this team won't be really good until either Green or Kirstic (preferably Kirstic) is forced to come off the bench as the sixth or seventh man.

@Dooney
Absolutely. He rotated late from the weak side and halfway contested a dunk when the offensive player was already in the air and attacking the rim and thus was under the basket when the dunk occured...aka, something that happens ALL the time in basketball.

Much ado about nothing, until they made a fiasco over something so insignificant that I was beyond disappointed when Sportscenter showed it.

"That was it? Big deal, he was late from the help side, happens 10 times a game." And then I changed the channel.

I remember I had a night class when this game was on, so I was watching it on my computer on NBA League Pass. When CP3 hit the winner, I let out a loud yelp in the middle of class, leading to everyone (including my professor) to stop what they were doing and stare at me. Good game.

Ugh, I remember that game as if it was last night and agree with everything you wrote. I can still see CP3 going into the lane on that last shot from my seat in 112 and just yelling in my mind "STOP HIM!! HE'S GOING STRAIGHT TO THE HOOP!!! NOOOOO!!!" This from a guy who cheered as loud as anyone for the Honets when they were here. And then it seemed like slow motion as the shot went up and up and up and then...down through the basket. What a night. I'm not sure whether to curse you for replaying this one or thank you for the memories. I guess I'll take the latter so keep up the good work.

"In a speed suit, you say to the world, 'Look out! I know what I'm wearing for the rest of my life!"

-Rusty Venture, "Hate Floats."

@okiefunk

The thing is that Sefolosha can also play the 3, so I look to see him bouncing back and forth a bit. When Durant sits down, they can slide over Sef and bring in Harden at the two or slide Green over and bring in white or Collison or Ibaka depending on who's around. I'm sure that Harden will also get some time when Sef sits for spells as well. And Harden can even play a little point (not sure if he can defend it though) so ya never know.

I like the fact that Harden/Sefolosha give the team some versatility that way. The addition of Harden really completes the guard corps in my opinion, and if they can keep Weaver around for added D in certain scenarios, then all the better. Let's not forget how well Weaver played versus the likes of Chris Paul and Kobe Bryant. They should not lose that kid if they can help it.

...."oh come on, grow a pair you weiner!".... I laughed all over again, this is why we love you Royce!

@Jax--I am worried about pitting Harden against Sefolosha for minutes too, Thabo quickly became a favorite of mine with his gritty defense and hustle. They play the position differently, and I think Harden's greatest asset is his passing and ability to see the floor, not his defense. There should be plenty of opportunity for them both to shine, and while I still give the starting nod to Sefolosha, it will be Harden's to steal.

@J.G.
didn't you write a book? if so i have some questions for ya dork4king@yahoo.com

I've still got my free Rumble poster from this game hanging on my wall. I remember this game so vividly, and it was heartwrenching. Heck, though, getting to watch Durant score his (so far) career high points? Awesome.

Nike made LeBron look like a chump... not because he was dunked on, but because they decided to hide THAT VIDEO! It would have been talked about for 2-3 days after it happened and then forgotten about. But because of someone's decision to confiscate those tapes, it has been talked about for far longer. With it now being leaked and hyped up waaaay too much, it makes Nike/LeBron look like the Vince Young of the NBA (and LeBron wearing all those shirts with LBJ-MVP on them doesn't help, if I might add).

@Jax Raging Bile Duct
You might be seeing a few replies from me, because apparently, if you include multiple links in a reply it has to await moderation before being posted...and since Royce isn't here...it may or may not be on here.

And since I still don't know if those links will get posted, go to Hoopsworld for some good Thunder articles (and I'm sorry if you're reading this and those links did get moderated and you had to see this for a second time).

@Jax Raging Bile Duct
Yeah, my first post on here is still awaiting moderation but I did a SUBSTITUTE BOLTS for everybody that included Thorpe's stuff, so whenever it gets moderated and you see it, that's why it's on there, Jax.

I'll just go ahead and post the two other links again though:

Hoopsworld has two really great articles on the State of the Thunder:

Lebron dunk tape finally leaked...check it out here:

http://ebaumnation.com/2009/07/22/jordan-crawford-...

It's really not that bad, Crawford made a move and Lebron came over to help on D but was already too far out of postition. I have no idea why they decided to hide this. It's not that bad.

Thorpe came out with his pre-season rookie rankings. It's an insider article, but he's got James Harden at #6.

6. James Harden, Thunder
I think Harden is the second-best American player in this class, but he's competing for playing time with Thabo Sefolosha, an up-and-coming player who does many of the same things Harden does. The Thunder need to develop both guys, which means Harden probably won't get the minutes that the guys ahead of him on this list will.

Still, this gifted passer plays the game beautifully, with a veteran's pace and intelligence, so he'll be productive in the time he gets. Should Sefolosha falter, Harden immediately would become a ROY contender.

Randy Hill also offers a look at how some analysts would redo the draft after the Summer League performances:
http://msn.foxsports.com/nba/story/9833162/Summer-...

3. James Harden, shooting guard, Arizona State (Reality is No. 3 by the Oklahoma City Thunder): The consensus is that while he's no threat to revolutionize the sport, Harden also seems immune from wrecking the Thunder while assimilating in the league.

"He's really, really solid," a panel member said. "That's what we've come to ... being thrilled when the No. 3 overall pick is solid enough to not screw a team up."

Gee, what a lovely endorsement for Harden. Wasn't that just what a warm hug would feel like if it was in written form?
