Summer League wrap: Thunder 94, Celtics 82

BOX SCORE

Another fantastic game. And by fantastic, well, I think you know what I mean.

  • The Thunder mixed it up today with a different starting lineup and a lot of the non-roster guys saw a lot more playing time. The starting five were Westbrook, Vaden, Livingston, D.J. White and DeVon Hardin. Livingston was back and looked great after sitting yesterday’s game and Kyle Weaver (12 points, 4-5 from the floor) asserted himself much more and was far more aggressive on the offensive end. I actually noticed him today.
  • James Harden didn’t play at all in the first half but came on in the second to score nine points and on 2-4 shooting. He also had three terrific passes in a short time span, including one beautiful bounce pass to D.J. White for a dunk. Harden’s vision and feel for where his teammates are is just awesome. When Westbrook flies through the lane and goes airborne I get the feeling he’s on the way down and thinks, “Oh crap, where do I go with this?” Harden on the other hand is seeing where he could go with it as he’s slashing through the lane and before he takes off.
  • Westbrook today though, was excellent again. He may have had four turnovers, but I only can remember one being his fault. Three times a perfect pass went through a teammates hands (I’m talking to you, Byron Nelson Mullens). Russ scored 26 (9-16 shooting!), tossed out five assists, had four rebounds and had five steals and appeared completely in control for the full game. He never really had a bad stretch of poor decisions. One play that stuck out to me: On a fast break, Westbrook had the opportunity to go 1-on-2 or pull-out. He went ahead and took on the two defenders, but didn’t attack the rim recklessly without a Plan B. He took his time, drew both defenders and dropped off a beauty to D.J. White for a dunk.
  • Robert Vaden got more chances today and didn’t take advantage (two points, 1-7 from the floor). Twice early he was set up nicely by Westbrook and missed wide open threes.
  • Reader Bryan with a nice comment about Westbrook’s first half: “Agreed, he is playing quite well and you can tell that he is all that’s holding the team together at the moment. Vaden just stands there. Mullens is like a cat chasing a flying insect and, the others are just getting by on Westbrook’s play. I’m a bit shocked, frankly.”
  • Twice Robert Swift beat Mullens on the offensive glass and finished with dunks. Mullens is just pretty inconsistent. His jumper didn’t fall today but he was impressive going up high for an alley-oop. While he scored six, he didn’t make much of an impression on the glass or the defensive end again. Unless he really stars in Vegas, I’m thinking D-League all the way for him. I think he has every tool to be really, really good, he’s just not there yet.
  • Nice to see former Yukon/John Marshall star J.R. Giddens playing pretty well. He may actually catch on with someone this year. He’s got a pretty well rounded game and he’s a good defender. Also, De’Angelo Alexander got his first burn and scored on a nice lefty spin move late in the game. (Update: Evidently, that sweet lefty spin move was actually DeVon Hardin. Darn you, blurry webcast.)
  • David Thorpe: “Westbrook has a chance to be a all-defensive team guy … Good defense always starts with great starting positions, both individually and with all 5 guys. The Thunder, collectively, get that.”
  • Just because I know the entire state of Oklahoma cares: Robert Swift played 21 minutes, scored nine, grabbed four rebounds and thoroughly embarrassed himself just three times.
  • D.J. White played much better today with 16 and 5, hitting 7 of 10 from the floor. And DeVon Hardin played pretty well too scoring 11, grabbing seven boards and blocking four shots.
  • Serge Ibaka didn’t play any today. Obviously probably nothing wrong, just management is picking spots for these guys. He’s got another full week in Vegas coming up and he’s not used to playing in back-to-back games.
  • Evidently, Moses Ehambe played two minutes today and again, came up empty in the box score. I almost have a hard time believing that he’s played 5-plus minutes and hasn’t done anything.

picture-14

Nobody making a huge impression today, except for the fact Russell Westbrook really looks like he’s improved and still improving. I think he’s understanding more and more how to get teammates involved and how to choose his spots. Again, for the billionth time, he’s not where he should be, but he’s played very well in these three games.

Oklahoma City gets the Scrapple tomorrow at 2 p.m.

There's a spot in the rotation up for grabs. 4th big. 9th guy. Probably 20 minute/game. It's either going to be DJ White or Serge Ibaka. Before watching Ibaka play, I had that spot going to White easy. Now I'm not sure at all. Serge can play. And he'll get loads better as he plays more.

@Royce
This was right before the trainwreck that is Pork Goes to Hollywood... ugh.

…seriously.

That's hilariously awesome.

@Nix
2 p.m. today and 10 a.m. tomorrow.

as far as russel rebounding on offense, and potentially being out of position on defense. Since he has such a good nose for the ball the SG just needs to get back. And I have not seen Harden diplaying the same sort of offensive rebound knack that russel does. doesn't matter whos is back as long as someone is... well unless is swifty ;)

@Bryan
Actually, I did notice it a bit (admittedly I didn't get to watch all the games out here). I mean, he's a rookie transitioning to a new position against much better players, and with a young team who didn't play all that well in team-defense, so I can understand the problems. But Westbrook actually had many issues with screens, getting back on defense, and following his man when he didn't have the ball.

The Thunder's ability to rebound last year was one of the reasons that I never understood why some said we needed Thabeet instead of a SG like Harden. Yes, we all know we need much better defense, but our defense - primarily because we rebounded well - was much closer to average than our offense.

Last update from Denver as, thank God, we're coming home tomorrow. I finally saw a decent number of Nuggets shirts at the Denver Zoo today. That said, I wouldn't trade Oklahoma City for Denver if you paid me (well, OK, sign me to a midlevel exception and I'll move). I can step outside my car to smoke outside a restaurant or even a parking lot a block from Coors Field without getting hit up by homeless guys.

I can see your point. But, ave you noticed him being out of position defensively? I'll admit that I am more prone to watch the ball handler and offensive players of both teams, so maybe I am not the best person to ask that question. But it doesn't seem to me like it has been a problem for him. Could be wrong...it happens.

@Bryan
Out rebounding the opposing team doesn't necessarily mean we have good rebounders, just that the other team is missing a lot of shots or is even worse than us. But besides that, I like that Westbrook gets those boards. I am just afraid that it puts him in a bad place defensively. Ultimately, Russell is the man at the point of attack. If he's the last guy back, it makes our team defense all out of whack.

@Keith
I think so, he really seems to have a nose for the ball, he is small enough to squeeze into small spaces and athletic enough to get up there with the trees and pull em down.

There was a short stretch last year where the Thunder out rebounded everyone they played. They have that ability.

One question about Russell. Do you think he would still be grabbing those 2-3 offensive rebounds each game if we had better rebounders in our frontcourt? I think we've documented pretty well how middling of a rebounder Green is, and Krstic has never really been more than what we're seeing of him now. For example, if we had picked up Gortat, would Russell still be all over the boards, or would he just be out of position?

Chris :
I read that Ehambe is serving as the unofficial translator for Serge Ibaka. I believe that he is on the team to ease Serge’s transition here in the USA. Yet another great “little” thing that management has done right. I love how the Thunder are being operated.

x2

Jax Raging Bile Duct :
Also, De’Angelo Alexander got his first burn and scored on a nice lefty spin move late in the game.
See, I was thinking that was DeVon Hardin. But the webfeed is fuzzy, so I wasn’t sure.
The box score says De’Angelo was 0 for 0 shooting.
hmmm…

I swear that was De'Angelo. But I guess I could be wrong. Really looked like him. If that was D. Hardin, then color me impressed.

Royce,
Turns out we have a common acquaintance. I worked with Tres Savage until just today actually. He got a new gig. We’re both fans of the site, he just hates comment threads.

Ah yes, I know Tres. Former editor of mine at The Daily.

harden is passing far better than his assist number suggest. those numbers will go up when he's passing to KD and Uncle Jeff instead or guys like mullens and vaden. i'm excited.
and i intentionally capitalized KD and Uncle Jeff while keeping mullens and vaden in lower case. haha

hmmm...

This was the third game in a row for RW. I wonder if we'll see him at all tomorrow.

Only here does "the Scraple" make any sense. These games would be awful without DnG calling, er, not calling the shots. They did a little better today of remembering that we can't always tell who just surprised everyone with a rare slick move.

So happy that Weaver showed up today. I know he's not the best player, nor will he be, but I really like his game when he asserts himself. He's actually quite good.

Let's see, what else? Vaden=disappointment for now. DJ continues to do well. For a while it was the Russel and DJ show. Mullens needs to go get some stick'em and get back to shooting those short jumpers - made a nice pass or two though. It's too hard for me to get a read on what some of the other guys are doing because it is so hard to tell who is who.

And I'll stick to what I said earlier about Westbrook (thanks Royce). He actually had a really nice game, stayed in control and got some nice steals at some key points in the game. I kind of got the sense that he was sandbagging a bit, only turning it on when he felt like he needed to. Now, THAT is encouraging!

Westbrook has an uncanny ability to get offensive rebounds. He lead all guards last year in offensive rebounds. He actually averaged more offensive boards than any guard I can find in the last six years.

Westbrook's not freakishly long, he's a great athlete but definitely not the best. I don't understand how he seems to always get 2-3 offensive boards a game.
