Thunder mascot to be a bison; to be unveiled against the Hornets Feb. 17

From NewsOK.com (thanks to MartzMimic for the heads up):

“The Oklahoma City Thunder mascot will be a bison and will be unveiled at the Thunder’s Feb. 17 home game against the New Orleans Hornets, sources have confirmed.”

I’m happy. As soon as I heard the name was going to be Thunder, this is what I thought an appropriate mascot would be. It made sense, it tied to the state and it could be really cool. I have a feeling that the name will be something like Bolt (Bolt the Bison sounds good, right?), and I’m relieved this is the direction they decided to go. They’ll have to be careful not to steal Bennie the Bull’s look and make sure they have a good design that’s original and clever. Let’s just hope they stick with traditional bison colors and make the “base color” brown, gray or black and not Thunder blue fur with an orange/red nose and yellow horns. That would be bad.

And if you’re wondering what the difference between a bison and a buffalo is, a bison is what we traditionally think of as a buffalo. A bison is the big, hairy animal that’s found in the Midwest. A buffalo is traditionally found in Africa and Asia. So we’ve got the correct term here. Take that Colorado!

The horse pigs are doing great at OU basketball games. If you've been lately , you know what I mean.

Hey wait, bison would already be two. Unison would be a single one.

Unison
Bison
Trison
Quadrison?

A single one is a bison, right? But that's also the plural, no?

One bison, two bison
One bison, two bisons

or
One bison, two beese?

Clay said there'd be a "logo package"... so I imagine over the next couple of years we will see a variety of updates and improvements. Just like every other team, ours will evolve in time.

I see what you're saying and that makes sense too.

I understand that many of the teams have primary and secondary logos, and I can possibly see this happening in the near future for us - next year or the year after maybe. It's just relatively hard to imagine that we'd change our primary logo, floor design, marketing materials, merchandise, etc. to correspond with a mascot that's being introduced 2/3rds through our inaugural season. I can likely see adding a secondary logo with the bison rather than adding the bison as our primary logo. Just my thoughts...

A bison logo with our 15 team colors? I'd be interested to see how they made that work!

Right on Gerald. Dallas has two logos, the Knicks do (the NYK), the Jazz, the Celtics have the clover and the one with Lucky and so on.

I've always liked the idea of tying Thunder with bison. I think it would make me like the name a lot more. And I'm already kind of getting used to it.

One thing we forget is that all this stuff had to be put together in a matter of three months. A name, a jersey, a logo, a court design... it may seem easy but I'm sure it takes a lot of time to get approved and get put in place. Current team's logos and other things have had years to be altered and changed and perfected to make up its current form.

Hi everyone: I'm just implying that the primary logo will change. There actually is a recent history of team's doing this. Check out the Balitmore Ravens for example. They have had four different logos/marks associated with the team in their brief history. New Orleans Hornets have several: The new Fluer De Bee, the "H" in the hive, which they used when they were in OKC, and of course, their primary, which features Hugo with the ball. Generally, new marks are launched in the silly season, after the regular season, and before fall camp begins. I always felt that the OKC shield never fully looked "complete." I've heard from several insiders of the bison logo and think that the concept makes sense.

I'm not sure if I like the idea of the logo moving to be our secondary logo. With all this merchandise out there already with our "secondary logo." It just doesn't make a whole lot of sense, at least not within the first 6 months of the team's existence.

I do like the bison though. I'm anxious to see this bison dunk...

Hah people are going to think I am an insider or something. My fantasy basketball team is named "Thunder Bison". Dont know if this link will work, but you can check it out here.

Im not doing to shabby either, and Durant is my stud player. By the way I really enjoy the site so keep up the good work.

I've heard a similar rumor about that. Most teams have two logos and the "OKC" is very secondary logo-ish. We'll have a second logo at some point but whether or not the primary mark turns into it is another thing.

@Nix
He's implying that the logo will change, not the name. Though I doubt either will happen by draft night this year!

LordGerald, That's highly unlikely...If you're implying that the team name would be changed...That's completely not going to happen...

Are you certain, LordGerald? That is very interesting.

Folks, this is not a secret, but I've heard for months that the current logo is actually going to morph into the secondary mark. The bison will eventually be our primary mark. Probably will be unveiled for NBA Draft.

Ohhh my. I can already hear the scorn, laughter and disbelief from the latte sippers on their laptops in front of the local Starbucks in every "big, sophisticated" (sarcasm) city in America.

Let the trolling begin.....

And they still don't look good. Yeah, that would be bad to have a pig/bison.

I just hope and pray it wasn't designed by the same folks who created the horse pigs. For the first year or two, Boomer and Sooner looked like they were on crack.

I kind of hope they really run with the bison theme. Less lightning and have some thundering bison on the big screen. I'm sure there's a clip from Dances With Wolves to be used.

I was just sure it would have been a thunderbird. But thundering herd sounds about right to me. Looking forward to the 17th!
